Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. They may be blue, but you can pick up which of these collectible items as Lanky Kong in "Donkey Kong 64"?

Answer: Banana

As always, bananas play a big roll in the "Donkey Kong" series in "64", and although you play as five different members of the Kong Family, all vying for their own unique collectibles throughout, each collects larger bananas for the missing hoard and their own individual smaller bananas to go towards other items in the game.

In fact, each Kong has one hundred of their own small bananas in each major stage, and each Kong's bananas are colour-coordinated (yellow for DK, red for Diddy, blue for Lanky, purple for Tiny, and green for Chunky).
2. In "Slay the Spire" (PC), which of these Relics, counting towards your final score, gives you three Curses and three new Relics?

Answer: Bell

"Slay the Spire" scores you in multiple ways, and really the scoring only matters if you're looking to beat your previous bests or make it onto the leaderboards online. One way to do this is to nab Relics, passive (and occasionally active) items that can grant bonuses to your character as you ascend. One such Relic is the Calling Bell which, in addition to granting you three new Relics instantly will also give you three Curse cards, impeding you in the same stroke. You can, of course, combat these cards if need-be or with some luck on your side.
3. Which of these items was collected throughout "Banjo-Kazooie" (N64) and "Banjo-Tooie" (N64)?

Answer: Feather

"Banjo-Kazooie" and "Tooie" were both collect-a-thons in every sense of the word. Created by Rare for the Nintendo 64, both 3D platformers involved heading into different worlds (each themed) to collect musical notes, puzzle pieces (known as Jiggies), Jinjos, and more in addition to ammunition and fuel for different techniques. Feathers were of particular use; Red Feathers allowed Kazooie to fly and Gold Feathers created an invincibility shield.
4. Five of which of these items in "Super Mario Bros. 2" (NES) will result in a Starman?

Answer: Cherry

While score is kind of beside the point in this classic NES title, there are clever ways of picking up useful items to use to your advantage. While the cherries found floating throughout the worlds don't have any other inherent use, collecting five of them at any given time will allow a Starman to float in a direction across the screen and give you a brief shot at becoming invincible. Cherries never really made a reappearance in later "Mario" platformers, at least not to the same useful extent.
5. In "Dead Rising" (Xbox 360, PS4), which of these items could heal Frank?

Answer: Apple

Interestingly, while there's no coffee in "Dead Rising", you can find coffee creamer. This comes with about four dozen other foods, any of which can grant Frank, the main character, the opportunity to keep on fighting a bit longer, replenishing his health.

The most likely place to find apples in the game is in the Leisure Park though they do spawn under specific circumstances elsewhere in the mall. A bell appears in this series as well-- the Holiday Bell in "Dead Rising 4". It can be used as a weapon, like everything else.
6. Known as Cupid's Grenade in "Pikmin 2" (Gamecube, Wii), which of these items can be returned to your ship to reduce your Hocotate Freight debt?

Answer: Cherry

Although in many instances, Olimar and Louie will use Pikmin to salvage relics of what appears to be an ancient civilization (ranging from old Batteries to clothespins and rubber ducks), they will also occasionally dredge up food. While "Pikmin 2" and "Pikmin 3" also feature an apple (they call it the 'Insect Condo') and a bell (called the 'Danger Chime'), only the cherry is referred to as 'Cupid's Grenade', likely because of its shape.

It's worth twenty coins.
7. This lowers your health, but raises your EVE in "BioShock" (PS3, Xbox 360). Which is it?

Answer: Cigarette

Yeah-- one of the many interesting items to pick up in "BioShock" and "BioShock 2", Cigarettes can be found on enemy bodies or in machines found throughout Rapture, and while they certainly aren't good for your health, you can pick them up and use them to regenerate a small amount of EVE, the substance that is used to fuel your Plasmids in the game. Apples can be found in "BioShock Infinite" though how they made it to Columbia is beyond me.

They're used for health on occasion.
8. In "TwinBee", the 1985 arcade classic, the main power-ups found in the game were which of these?

Answer: Bell

A shoot-'em-up game with a retro aesthetic, "TwinBee" was a fast-paced and rarely-seen vertical side-scroller in which one or two players would move upwards through the map collecting bells to power themselves up with new abilities. Unlike other arcade games of the era, "TwinBee" was garishly colourful and made use of a vibrant colour palette to liven up arcades; players didn't fight off aliens from the sky.

Instead, they collected bells, fruits, and orbs, fighting off vegetables and kitchen utensils.

As you do.
9. Which of these items can be thrown as a weapon in the "Super Smash Bros." series?

Answer: Apple

While a number of vegetables are thrown at foes in this game (using Peach's attack, mainly, to pull up turnips and the like), the humble apple, being pulled into the game from the "Kirby" series, was introduced as a lighter projectile to bonk enemies for a small percentage of damage.

In the "Kirby" games, apples are similarly of little use, occasionally being used as fireable projectiles against certain enemies (a certain tree comes to mind) but never transforming Kirby. In "Kirby: Triple Deluxe" (3DS), Kirby could transform into Bell Kirby (as a side-note).
10. Which of these heals Super Mario in "Super Mario 64"?

Answer: Coin

Yeahhhh...one would have to assume that money is power. In this classic 3D platformer for the Nintendo 64, Mario has a health meter that gets notches like wedges of a pie, and every time he takes damage, another slice is removed. The only way to fill these back up is collecting coins throughout each world. Regular coins count for 1, red coins count for 2, and blue coins count for 5.

This, of course, does not carry over to all Mario platformers, but it was the first in the long-running series to use this mechanic.

It was continued for "Super Mario Sunshine" (Gamecube) and both "Galaxy" titles (Wii).
