Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the term 'al-Qaeda' mean in Arabic?

Answer: The Base

The literal translation for the term al-Qaeda is 'The Base'. It is a worldwide militant Islamic organization that has committed numerous acts of terror to further its goal of jihad.
2. When al-Qaeda was first formed, membership requirements called for a good listener, good manners, and obedience. What other requirement was asked for?

Answer: A pledge or oath of fealty

If a candidate possessed obedience, good manners, and a willingness to listen and learn, the only other thing required was (bayat) or his pledge of fealty to The Cause. Radical Islam and weapons training were not required because those things can be taught to the willing and faithful.
3. What did the February 1998 fatwa allow al-Qaeda operatives to do?

Answer: Kill Americans and their Allies

The February 1998 fatwa issued by bin Laden allowed al-Qaeda operatives to kill Americans and their allies. In Islam, only a recognized scholar of the Koran has the right to issue a fatwa. Osama bin Laden was not a recognized scholar of Koranic studies and therefore was not officially able to make any such ruling.
4. What event signaled the start of al-Qaeda's 'War on America'?

Answer: The US embassy bombings

The bombings of the US embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi were the opening salvos of al-Qaeda's war on America. Ironically, more Muslims were killed in these attacks than Americans.
5. What military action did the US take after the suicide bombing of the USS Cole?

Answer: It took no military action

The US took no military action after discovering al-Qaeda was behind the suicide attack on the USS Cole. The decision was made by then President George W Bush. Failure to act emboldened al-Qaeda to launch further attacks.
6. What was the signature tactic used by Abu al-Zarqawi's al-Qaeda in Iraq?

Answer: Suicide bombings

Abu Zarqawi's al-Qaeda in Iraq used all of the named tactics to fight US and Coalition forces in Iraq but his organization's signature tactic was the suicide bombing of Muslim Shiite civilians.
7. What was the outcome of the Madrid Train Bombings on 11 March 2004?

Answer: Spain withdrew from Iraq

The eventual outcome of the Madrid Train Bombings was that Spain withdrew its combat forces from Iraq. Although al-Qaeda was not directly involved, it praised the attacks and its outcome.
8. What did al-Qaeda operative Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab use as his explosive device?

Answer: His underwear

Umar Farouk Abdulmuttallab used his underwear as an explosive device. The under garment was designed by an al-Qaeda operative. Abdulmuttallab attempted to ignite them aboard Flight 253 en route to Amsterdam on December 25, 2009. He is now serving a life sentence.
9. Osama bin Laden and many of his al-Qaeda cohorts could have been apprehended or killed during the battle at Tora Bora. How did they most likely escape?

Answer: They bribed the warlords

Osama bin Laden and his most trusted members of al-Qaeda escaped by bribing the warlords whom the US hired to seal the exits out of Afghanistan. This was a fantastic blunder because US light infantry could have easily blocked them crossing into Pakistan without using the unreliable warlords whose loyalties were questionable.
10. What was the call sign used by Navy Seals confirming bin Laden's death?

Answer: Geronimo

The call sign used by Navy Seals signaling mission success was 'Geronimo'. Upon hearing this, president Obama said, "We got him".
