Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some sweet nothings to whisper in her (his) ear. What about: "You have an enchanting smile"?

Answer: Hai un sorriso incantevole

Hai = you have, i.e. the second person singular, or "tu" form, of the verb "avere" (to have). The "tu" form is a familiar, informal way to address a single person. In Italian there is also the more formal "Lei" form, i.e. the third person singular, which is mostly used to talk to a stranger or an elder person, and sometimes to keep people at distance. Since a sweetheart is neither a stranger nor a person one wants to keep at distance, tender feelings are generally expressed in the "tu" form.
In Italian there is also a plural "you", used when speaking to more than one person. In that case, one conjugates a verb in the "voi" form, i. e. the second person plural.
The other choices are: Una sorella svenevole = a simpering sister; un accento indecifrabile = an unintelligible accent; uno sguardo ingannevole = a deceitful glance.
2. If the object of your affection hasn't a spiky gel-hairdo (or, obviously, isn't bald-headed), you might like to express your admiration for her (his) hair by saying: "Your hair is like silk".

Answer: I tuoi capelli sono come seta

In Italian, one refers to the mass of hair on one's head with the plural of "il capello" (i. e. a single hair) = i capelli. The other similes are rather offensive: lana = wool; spine = thorns; paglia = straw.
3. To manifest your compelling desire to meet your beloved again, try with a forceful: "I must see you again!"

Answer: Devo rivederti!

Devo rivalutarti = I must revalue you; devo rivenderti = I must resell you; devo rivelarti = I must reveal to you.
4. While you are languidly bobbing up and down in a gondola, or sipping an aperitif in front of the Pantheon, you can express the pleasure that her (his) company gives you with a simple but effective: "It's wonderful to be with you".

Answer: È meraviglioso stare con te

È = It's. "Meraviglioso", "stupendo", "splendido", "fantastico", are all synonyms for "wonderful".
Stirare con te = to iron with you; essere a casa = to be at home; stare da soli = to be alone
5. You are getting braver and braver, and now you even dare: "May I kiss you"?

Answer: Posso baciarti?

In Italian, "posso" means both "I can" and "I may".
Batterti = beat you; barattarti = swap you; sbalordirti = astonish you.
6. When cruel life separates you from your darling, you can send her (him) a romantic SMS: "I am thinking of you".

Answer: Sto pensando a te

Sto pensando al tè = I am thinking of the tea (do notice the accent!); sto pensando a lei = I am thinking of her; sto pensando al conto = I am thinking of the bill.
7. If your longing for her (his) presence is unbearable, you can send an ardent, desperate message, such as: "I miss you like crazy".

Answer: Mi manchi da impazzire

Manco per niente = forget it; non manca un bel niente = nothing at all is missing; cerca di non mancare = try not to be away.
8. If you wish to impress her (him) with your literary prowess, do try with a romantic quote from Dante's Inferno: "Love, that denial takes from none belov'd".

Answer: Amor, ch'a nullo amato amar perdona

All choices are from the Inferno in Dante's "Divine Comedy".
Amor ch'a nullo amato amar perdona = Love, that denial takes from none belov'd. Canto V. Here is narrated the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca, one of the most romantic of all time.
Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch'intrate = All hope abandon, ye who enter here! Canto III. This is the supposed inscription at the entrance to Hell.
Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita = Half-way through our life. Canto I. This is the opening line of the Inferno.
Senza speme vivemo in desio = Still desiring, we live without hope. Canto IV. Here Dante meets some of the ancient philosophers.
9. If literature is not your forte, a more conventional sentence will help too: "I love you with all my heart".

Answer: Ti amo con tutto il cuore

Be careful not to confuse organs! Fegato = liver; rene = kidney; polmone = lung.
10. Alas! It was a wonderful interlude, but now you must part forever. A perfect romance needs a perfect conclusion, such as: "I won't ever forget you!"

Answer: Non ti dimenticherò mai più

The other choices are for cynical, hard-hearted people. Ti scorderò nel giro di due ore = I'll forget you within two hours; ti manderò una cartolina = I'll send you a postcard; potresti almeno portarmi all'aeroporto = You could at least take me to the airport.
