Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. La tartaruga si sveglia a mezzanotte.

Answer: The turtle wakes at midnight.

Svegliarsi is the word for to wake up. Sblagliarsi is to be mistaken. Mezzogiorno is of course noon. Torta would be several types of pie or cake and also several savory versions of something in a crust. Here where I live, "torta di verdura" is a sort of pie with Swiss chard or zucchini in it and other fillings.

Answer: My uncle Alberto's monkey stole a dozen apricots from the neighbors' tree.

Rubare is to steal, rovinare is to ruin. Mele are apples. Vicini di casa are neighbors.

Answer: Mr. Braggadoccio spent his evenings with his dog Ernest doing crosswords.

Un crocifisso is a crucifix for the prayers detractor, and una preghiera is prayer. La sera in the singular would still indicate in general in the evenings or at night. Passare il tempo, les vacanze, would mean to spend..time or vacation in this instance.

Answer: Eat your spinach and there's pistachio ice cream for dessert!

Gli spinaci= spinach. "Pistacchio" is pronounced with a hard c in Italian. Takes a while to get used to it. Parsnips, ever had those? I have and I'm still alive to tell the tale. Not half bad! They are supposedly called pastinacche, but my dictionary was British and old, don't suppose they eat them much any more!

Answer: The Marquise's poodle has silk sheets in his room.

Il lenzuolo is sheet. La seta: silk. Le lenticchie : lentils.

Answer: Redbeard was a little hungry so he ate two cows for a snack.

Lo spuntino is a snack. You also have la merenda heard occasionally.

Answer: Pamela didn't have an envelope that was big enough for her bra.

Una busta in this sense is an envelope. Un reggiseno (reggipetto)is a bra, your chest is governed and regulated supposedly. Un busto is the bust but in the sense of a portrait bust or the upper body. Seno is the chest or bust.
8. Accidenti! C'è una mosca nel burro!

Answer: Darn, there's a fly in the butter!

Burro is butter. Asino would be a donkey. Accidenti is closer to darn than what it sounds like to us, and most Italians I've been around lately don't use it any longer, they've gone on to much stronger stuff! Zitto e mosca! Means something pretty close to my lips are sealed, or mum's the word in Italian.

Answer: Jack sold the cow for some beans.

You can also say "alcuni fagioli" if you like. "La mucca pazza" is the mad cow.
10. Rosa, hai visto tutti quei pipistrelli nel pianoforte?

Answer: Rosa, did you see all those bats in the piano?

Il pipistrello is the bat. You must admit that he has a strange name in different languages! Le stelle are the stars.
Grazie a Rosie in Italia per tutto.
