Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first president who had an assassination attempt on him was Andrew Jackson, in 1835. The would-be assassin was Richard Lawrence. Why did he try to kill Jackson?

Answer: He thought he was King Richard III of England and that the U.S. owed him money for property stolen from him.

On January 30, 1835, Jackson was walking out of a funeral in the Capitol when Lawrence jumped out of nowhere and fired a pistol eight feet from Jackson's heart. The pistol misfired, and Jackson attempted to hit Lawrence with his cane. Lawrence took a second pistol and fired again, and the gun miraculously also misfired.

The people around Jackson tackled Lawrence to the ground, and Jackson escaped without injury.
2. What was the verdict in Lawrence's trial?

Answer: Not guilty because of insanity

In the case, Francis Scott Key (writer of "The Star-Spangled Banner") was the prosecuting attorney. Even a patriot like Key agreed that Lawrence was insane. During the trial, Lawrence was even quoted as saying, "It is for me, gentlemen, to pass judgement on you and not you upon me."
3. One of the most famous assassinations was that of Abraham Lincoln, who was killed by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre in 1865. What day was it?

Answer: Good Friday

On April 14, 1865, while Lincoln was watching the play "Our American Cousin", Booth sneaked into the unguarded section that the president was in. Booth raised his pistol and shot Lincoln in the head, and the bullet went through his skull and stopped behind his right eye. Booth escaped the theater (although he had a broken leg), but was later found in a tobacco barn in Virginia eight days later.

A pistol went off, and no one knows if Booth was killed from a soldier's bullet, or if he committed suicide.
4. Lincoln's assassination was part of a conspiracy to cause the U.S. government to collapse.

Answer: True

John Wilkes Booth, George Atzerdot, David Herold, and Lewis Powell all conspired in a plot to overthrow the government. Booth was to kill Lincoln, Atzerdot was supposed to kill the vice-president, Andrew Johnson, and Herold and Powell were going to kill Secretary of State William Seward. Booth successfully killed Lincoln, but Atzerdot got scared and spent the night in a bar. Powell attacked Seward and the people in his house, but Seward survived. Booth was killed later, and Powell, Herold, and Atzerdot were hanged.
5. Why were the people involved in Lincoln's assassination given a military trial?

Answer: Lincoln was commander-in-chief of the armed forces

Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War, ordered a military trial. Lincoln was buried on May 4, 1865, in the Oak Ridge Cemetery with his son.
6. James Garfield is another president who was assassinated. Charles Guiteau was the killer. Where was Garfield shot?

Answer: A railroad depot

On July 2, 1881, Garfield was in the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad Depot when Charles Guiteau went behind the president and shot him twice. Garfield might have survived, but his doctors used unclean instruments and terrible judgement, and Garfield eventually died on September 19, 1881.
7. Garfield was buried near which lake?

Answer: Lake Erie

Garfield loved Lake Erie and spent a lot of time there, which is why he was buried in Cleveland on September 26, 1881.
8. How many attempts were made on Guiteau's life before he was eventually hanged?

Answer: 3

Because Garfield was loved by America, Guiteau was hated by America, and people tried to kill him twice while he was in jail and once on his way to court.
9. William McKinley was shot in 1901 by Leon F. Czolgosz. What state was Czolgosz from?

Answer: Ohio

Czolgosz's family had a farm in Ohio. Czolgosz was an anarchist, and because Czolgosz killed McKinley, many anarchists around the country were jailed, and some were attacked on the street. It took a while before anarchists could convince police that Czolgosz wasn't part of an anarchist group.
10. What event was McKinley at when he was shot?

Answer: Pan-American Exposition

On September 6, 1901, McKinley was to give a speech at the Temple of Music in the Pan-American Conference in Buffalo, New York. Czolgosz approached McKinley with a gun concealed in a bandage on his hand. McKinley was about to shake Czolgosz's hand when he fired at McKinley. McKinley died eight days later, and Czolgosz received the death penalty.
11. Another attempted assassination was against Theodore Roosevelt when he was trying to get a third term in office. In 1912, Roosevelt was about to give a speech when John Schrank fired a revolver at him. The bullet struck his pocket, where which two items saved his life?

Answer: An eyeglass case and a copy of his speech

On October 14, 1912, Roosevelt was about to give a speech in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, when Schrank shot him. The bullet hit his shirt pocket, containing a metal eyeglass case and a folded-up fifty page copy of his speech, which saved his life.
12. Although he was badly bleeding, Roosevelt told his audience that, "It takes more than a bullet to kill a ______________"

Answer: Bull Moose

He was a candidate of the Bull Moose (Progressive) Party. He did eventually go to the hospital, and Schrank did eventually go to the mental hospital, because he was classified insane.
13. Franklin D. Roosevelt, was almost killed by Giuseppe Zangara. Zangara was angry at what capitalism represented, and he hated people who were better off than him. He originally planned to kill which president?

Answer: Hoover

He was going to kill Hoover, but he found Roosevelt to be more convenient. On February 15, 1933, a few weeks before Roosevelt's inauguration, Zangara attempted to shoot Roosevelt during a speech. However, he arrived at the speech too late, and had to take a seat a few rows back from the front.

He also had to stand on a chair, so he had an unsteady aim. When Roosevelt was about to leave, Zangara opened fire. He shot five bystanders, one of whom died, but Roosevelt remained unhurt. A month later, Zangara was put in the electric chair.
14. Instead of Roosevelt, Zangara killed Anton Cermak, who was the mayor of which city?

Answer: Chicago

Sadly, Zangara's terrible aim caused a bullet to hit Cermak's right lung, killing him.
15. Next up is Harry Truman. Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo approached the Blair House (where Truman was staying while work was being done on the White House) and tried to kill the president so they could get attention to gain independence for which country?

Answer: Puerto Rico

Torresola and Collazo approached the house with a Luger and a P-38. White House police were guarding the house, and currently on duty were Donald Birdzell, Leslie Coffelt, Joseph Davidson, Floyd Boring, and Joseph Downs. The two parties engaged in a gunfight and both Coffelt and Torresola died. Collazo was sentenced to death, but Truman reduced it to a life sentence, and later Jimmy Carter freed him.
16. Collazo and Torresola tried to kill Truman because he didn't care about their country and didn't do anything to help it.

Answer: False

Actually, Truman gave Puerto Rico a better government, let them have a native Puerto Rican as governor, and gave Puerto Rico Social Security, which makes this attempt very ironic.
17. John F. Kennedy is the next president, who in November 1963 was assassinated. While driving through the streets of Dallas, in what order were the procession of cars?

Answer: Dallas police chief, Kennedy, motorcycle police, Johnson

On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was in a car moving through Dallas with Jackie Kennedy, governor of Texas John Connally, and his wife. At about 12:30 P.M., as they passed the Texas School Book Depository, Oswald fired at Kennedy twice and killed him. A few days later, while Oswald was being transferred to a different prison, Jack Ruby ran up and shot Oswald on live television, leaving many questions unanswered.
18. After Oswald shot Kennedy, where was he eventually found and captured?

Answer: None of these

He was found and captured in a movie theater, which is a bit ironic if you think about it. Booth killed Lincoln in a theater, and Booth was found in a warehouse. Oswald killed Kennedy from a warehouse, and Oswald was found in a theater. Kennedy was travelling in a Lincoln, and both of their successors were named Johnson.
19. Kennedy's successor, Lyndon Johnson, was the first president to be inaugurated in the air.

Answer: False

Although he was inaugurated on Air Force One, it was on the ground.
20. Gerald Ford is also on the list of assassination attempted presidents, and he actually had two attempts on his life. What state did these both happen in?

Answer: California

On September 5, 1975, Ford was on the street in Sacramento when Lynette Alice Fromme ran up and pointed a pistol at him. Police tackled her to the ground and she was arrested. She did this because she wanted to get attention for the Manson family.
21. At the second assassination attempt on President Ford, Sara Jane Moore tried to shoot and kill him because she wanted to get along with her radical friends after they found out she was an informer for which organization?

Answer: FBI

On September 22, 1975, only seventeen days after the first attempt, Ford was in San Francisco when Moore approached him with a pistol and fired. A bystander shoved her right before she shot and she wounded a cabdriver. Ford managed to escape unharmed, and Moore was given a life sentence.
22. In 1981 the president who had an attempt on his life was Ronald Reagan. John Hinckley was the shooter. Where was Reagan shot, threatening his life?

Answer: Lung

On March 30, 1981, in Washington D.C., Reagan was walking out of a hotel when Hinckley fired at him with two pistols. Secret Service agents shoved him into a car, but a bullet had hit his lung. They made it to George Washington Hospital, but Reagan only just survived.
Hinckley was found not guilty because of insanity.
