Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song "Here Comes Santa Claus" was co-written by Gene Autry and who else?

Answer: Oakley Haldeman

Gene Autry was inspired to write the lyrics to this song in 1946 while riding his horse during the Santa Claus Lane Parade. Halderman wrote the music and Autry first recorded the song in 1947 where it would become a number 5 country song and a number 9 pop song. He also performed the song in his 1949 movie "Cowboys and Indians".
2. In "The Chipmunk Song", what does Alvin want for Christmas?

Answer: A hula hoop

Written in 1958 by Ross Bagdasian, Sr., better known as David Seville, "The Chipmunk Song" went on to win 3 Grammys: Best Comedy Performance, Best Children's Recording, and Best Engineered Sound.
3. In the US, what do children customarily set out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve?

Answer: milk and cookies

In northern England, folklore tells of house gremlins, who mischievously moved things around the house and even throw things if they were upset. To placate them, the house owner would put food out for them at night and this became part of the ritual of Christmas as Christianity even took hold of the darkest areas of Yorkshire and Lancashire.
4. In "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss, what was the original coloring of the Grinch?

Answer: white fur and pink eyes

In the 1957 children's book, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", Dr. Seuss portrayed the Grinch as having white fur and pink eyes. It wasn't until the 1966 television adaptation that the Grinch appears as we think of him today, with green fur and cream-colored eyes.
5. What was the original title of the poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement C. Moore?

Answer: A Visit from St. Nicholas

"A Visit from St. Nicholas" was first published anonymously in 1823 and generally attributed to Clement Clark Moore. It is also known as "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" and "The Night Before Christmas" from its first line. The poem is largely responsible for the conception of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth century to today, including his physical appearance, the night of his visit, his mode of transportation, the number and names of his reindeer, as well as the tradition that he brings toys to children. Prior to the poem, American ideas about St. Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors varied considerably.

The poem has influenced ideas about St. Nicholas and Santa Claus from the United States to the rest of the English-speaking world and beyond.
6. How many candles should go on an advent wreath?

Answer: Four or five

Advent is a season observed in many Western Christian churches, a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The wreath is usually a horizontal evergreen wreath with four coloured candles, usually including a fifth white candle in the center. Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent, the lighting of a candle can be accompanied by a Bible reading and prayers. An additional candle is lit during each subsequent week until, by the last Sunday before Christmas, all four candles are lit.

Many Advent wreaths include a fifth "Christ candle" which is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
7. In the animated television special "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", what is the name of Rudolph's girlfriend?

8. For what US department store was Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer originally created?

Answer: Montgomery Ward

May wrote the book as an assignment for the retailer and considered naming the reindeer "Rollo" and "Reginald" before deciding on "Rudolph".
