Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which distinction does The University of Missouri in Columbia, MO, proudly hold? -It was the first publicly-funded university...

Answer: west of the Mississippi River

There are quite a few older universities but they are on the east coast. In fact, the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi is between the universities of Missouri and Kansas.
2. The University of Missouri at Columbia is better known to its alumni as what?

Answer: Mizzou

At football games, one side of the stands chants "MIZ" while the opposite side responds with "ZOU." This name is an aberration of "Mizzoorah," which is how many natives pronounce the state's name.
3. Years ago on campus, where now stands the Reynolds Alumni Center, there used to be a row of offbeat stores, including a beer joint. It was here that alumnus Mort Walker was inspired to draw the first Beetle Bailey cartoon. What was the name of that beloved bar?

Answer: The Shack

In fact, the door to this bar was indeed green and this inspired the pop song, "The Green Door." Just outside the alumni center today stands a bronze statue of Beetle Bailey in one of The Shack's booths downing a frosty mug.
4. Which American president has a monument on campus, thanks to his ardent desire to democratize the populace with a universal educational system?

Answer: Thomas Jefferson

Not only was Jefferson an advocate of free, universal education, he was instrumental in buying the ground on which MU now stands (the Louisiana Purchase). The monument is an early grave marker of Jefferson. His home in Monticello, VA, has erected another one on his grave.
5. Arguably the best journalism school in the United States is at the University of Missouri at Columbia. Not only is it the oldest one in the world, but today is one of the few, if not the only one, to contain its own public television and radio stations AND publish a daily newspaper. Which of these is an illustrious alumnus of MU's School of Journalism?

Answer: George C. Scott

George C. Scott was a senior in the journalism school when he decided he'd rather go into acting. Hence, he did not graduate. However, he went just across town to Stephens College to begin his dramatic career.
6. In which year did the University of Missouri at Columbia open its doors?

Answer: 1839

Missouri had only been a state for 19 years at the outset of establishing its own university. And, it was just 16 years prior to statehood that Lewis and Clark came up the Missouri River near Columbia exploring the Louisiana Purchase.
7. The University of Missouri has branched out from its original Columbia campus. Which of these Missouri cities does NOT contain a campus of the university?

Answer: Springfield

Springfield actually is home to Missouri State University whose undergraduate population is in fact larger than that of the university's Columbia campus. The Rolla campus is famous for its engineering school. The Kansas City campus contains outstanding medical and dental schools.
8. The most famous site at the Columbia campus are the "columns," remnants of the first building erected on campus. How many columns in a row still stand from old Academic Hall, which burned in 1892?

Answer: 6

The university still takes great pains to maintain what is left of Academic Hall, though natural deterioration as well as periodic graffiti continue to threaten "the columns." Francis Quadrangle surrounds the columns.
9. What is the mascot of the University of Missouri at Columbia?

Answer: Bengal Tiger

The school's colors are black and gold, like that of a tiger. At major sporting events someone is always present in the "Truman the Tiger" suit.
10. The alumni of Missouri's flagship university are proud and numerous. Which of these did NOT attend the university?

Answer: former chairman of the Federal Reserve System, Alan Greenspan

Kate Capshaw, wife of Steven Spielberg, also is an alumna. Brad Pitt was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity on campus. Sam Walton's daughters still live in Columbia.
