2. Codes and ciphers are different. What makes them differ?

Answer: A cipher replaces letters; a code replaces a whole word.

A code replaces a word or a phrase with a word, number or symbol. Secret agents, for example, sometimes have code names to conceal their identities. Tricycle was an agent in World War II, for example. Operation Overlord was the code name for the Allied invasion of Europe in 1944. It referred to an entire operation containing hundreds of different actions. On the other hand, the Enigma machine was a German cipher machine which mechanically replaced letters in plain text with other letters in cipher text. This cipher was decrypted by the allies at a place called Bletchley in southern England. The code breakers (more correctly they were cipher breakers) included people who were crossword puzzle aficionados as well as mathematicians. Some may well have been trivia addicts.

5. As myth would have it, this soft drink was supposedly green when invented in 1886. Now famous for ads depicting Santa Claus and polar bears, what is this popular beverage?

Answer: Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola (caramel-colored from the start) made its first appearance in Atlanta, Georgia, when its creator, Dr. John Stith Pemberton, introduced it to Jacobs' Pharmacy. The scripted name "Coca-Cola" was the brainchild of bookkeeper Frank Robinson. The new, carbonated soft drink enjoyed a modest success in its early years at the soda fountain, selling about nine glasses a day at a nickel a pop. Once it was acquired by Asa Griggs Candler in 1888, Coca-Cola really began to take off; now, about 1.4 billion Cokes are purchased each day. The "green Coke" rumor, though entirely untrue, may have been started because of the green contour bottle Coke was once packaged in.

8. Which element is used to make green pigment?

Answer: Chromium

Chromium oxide (Cr2O3) is used to make green pigments. Chromia, the pigment, was once called viridian. Cobalt is used to make blue pigments. Carbon is used for black pigments. Cadmium produces a range of pigments from yellow to red. Pigments are then added to various mediums from acrylic to egg yolk (for tempera) to produce paints. They are also added to a variety of other products to produce coloring.

The dingy "institutional green" hallways you may have encountered no doubt derived their color from Chromium!
