A Walk Around Historic King's Lynn Quiz

Answer: Kettlewell Lane Park

This is the section of town wall adjoining Kettlewell Lane. It also forms one boundary of a small park, with the Gaywood River and the Eastgate bridge providing other boundaries. It was reinforced at one time as the Gaywood was considered an important source of water.

The three wrong answers are all also roads in the vicinity of King's Lynn but none are anywhere close to any section of town wall.

Answer: Wyatt Street

This section of the wall is less thick but taller than the Kettlewell Lane Park portion. It is accessible from Highgate as well as Wyatt Street, with a tiny green space between the two roads providing the link. All three wrong answers are King's Lynn roads of varying degrees of prominence, but none are anywhere close to any section of town wall.

Answer: King's Lynn Train Station

This is a sideways view of the train station, which has been in service since the 1840s. It provides a regular service to London King's Cross, with Ely and Cambridge providing interchange options for other destinations. King's Lynn does have a bus station, which also serves many locations, but this is not it.

Answer: The Guannock Gate

The Guannock Gate can be found halfway along The Boardwalk in The Walks. It is joined by a connecting path from St Johns Walk that runs past the front of another landmark we will see in this quiz. Here we are just on the town side of the gate, with the home of King's Lynn Town Football Club just beyond. The South Gate is actually in the middle of a major road.

Answer: Red Mount

The Red Mount Chapel dates from the 14th century, but it was later that it was fortified - it remained defiantly Catholic during the era of the Reformation, which made it a potentially dangerous place.

Answer: King's Lynn Library

Until it was replaced by a purpose built new library this tower was the topmost part of the King's Lynn Library building, opened by Mr Carnegie himself with a golden key, though thereafter a standard iron key was used to lock and unlock the place. There is actually a mock Tudor alms house complex in the town, on Queen Street. King's Lynn does have a mighty impressive town hall, but it does not look like this. Clifton House has a tower that is quite well known, but it is much taller than this example.

Answer: Franciscans

This is the top part of Greyfriars Tower, once the centrepiece of the Franciscan Friary. There are odd surviving bits of various friaries in various parts of the town, but this was Franciscan.

Answer: All Saints

This is All Saints, which nowadays sits next to Hillington Square, a modern housing complex. All the other saints do have King's Lynn connections - there is a St Nicholas Chapel, St Margaret's was the original name of King's Lynn Minster before it gained its new status and St John the Evangelist is to be found in The Walks.

Answer: South Gate

This is the South Gate, viewed from the out of town side (on the town side it has a brick frontage). Traffic entering the town from the south passes directly through this gate. The Guanock Gate is in The Walks.

Answer: King's Lynn Minster

It is the Minster - this is on one of the two square towers at the front of that building, with a regular clock on the other tower. St Nicholas Chapel is also a colossal building, but it has less in the way of adornment.

Answer: The Guildhall of the Holy Trinity

This is the Guildhall of the Holy Trinity, which serves as King's Lynn Town Hall. It sits on the Saturday Market Place, adjacent to the Old Gaol House and opposite the Minster.

The Guildhall of St George, on King Street, is also important, having been a theatrical venue for over six centuries, including being visited by Shakespeare. It is currently being renovated and not suitable for photography. The Corn Exchange on the Tuesday Market Place is an important and impressive venue but it does not look like this. The Pilots' Office, which occupies one corner of a building that used to be the town's public baths is also impressive but not like this.

Answer: The Old Gaol House

The Old Gaol House, right next to the Town Hall and opposite the Minster is now a museum relating to its past function. The Lynn Museum, which adjoins the bus station, is also well worth a visit, but it does not boast this time piece. The Counting House is a property on Nelson Street and does not feature a time piece.

The Bank House is a hotel near the lower Purfleet, with an extensive network of cellars.

Answer: Hanse House

Hanse House started life as a warehouse and is now used for a wide variety of purposes. The name derives from the Hanseatic League, an association of mainly northern German and Dutch cities. Trading with these cities made King's Lynn wealthy a few centuries ago, and helps to explain how it is home to so many fine buildings.

The Lattice House is a pub, of similar vintage and also with an overhanging upper storey, but this is not it. Clifton House is a famous building on Queen Street. There are various alms houses dotted around the town but this is not one of them.

Answer: Post Office

This was King's Lynn's main post office back when towns still had such things. It has been empty and unused for a number of years. Unlike some towns King's Lynn does still possess a decent number of bank branches as well as few ex-banks, but this building is not one of them. Though it was once a lot wealthier than it is today King's Lynn has never boasted its own stock exchange.

There are various remains relating to railways in and around the town but this is not one of them.

Answer: St Nicholas Chapel

This is the organ of St Nicholas Chapel, a building that for all its title is not actually consecrated. Part of 2026's King's Lynn Festival was an hour long organ recital by Francesca Massey on this instrument, and it was splendid. The Minster also has an organ, but not the equal of this one.
