Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the song, he states that "it all started" on Thanksgiving how many years ago?

Answer: two

"Two Thanksgivings ago, that's two years ago on Thanksgiving...."
The song is based on a true incident that began in 1965, and the album was released in 1967 on Reprise records.
2. What is the name of Alice and Ray's dog?

Answer: Fasha

Alice and Ray lived with their dog Fasha. Woody was Arlo's dad's name. He was also a singer/songwriter and influenced the work of, among others, Bob Dylan. Woody died with Huntington's Disease shortly after the "Alice's Restaurant" album was released.
3. The restaurant is "just a half a mile" from what?

Answer: The railroad tracks

The restaurant is "around the back, just a half a mile from the railroad tracks."
Alice and Ray live in the bell tower of the church and Whitehall Street is the place where physical exams for the Army are conducted. (Of course, we all know the significance of the city dump!)
4. What is stored in the church where the pews used to be?

Answer: A half ton of garbage

The church is actually in Great Barrington, MA and was purchased by Arlo Guthrie in 1991. It was transformed into the Guthrie Center and now hosts a number of cultural and charitable events, including an annual walk to raise funds and awareness for the treatment of Huntington's Disease.
5. What did they load into the V W Microbus along with the garbage? Shovels and rakes and_____________________

Answer: Implements of destruction

This is one of my absolute favorite phrases in the song! I can only speculate that Arlo, in his mission to end the war in Viet Nam and promote world peace, considered garden tools the only acceptable "implements of destruction."
By the way, the VW Microbus was red.
6. What happened when they got to the dump?

Answer: They found it closed for Thanksgiving.

There was a chain across the dump and a sign saying "Closed on Thanksgiving". ("With tears in our eyes, we headed off into the sunset looking for another place to put the garbage.")
The walk for Huntington's Disease features a route that includes a visit to the city dump.
7. What two items did Officer Obie take from the prisoners when he put them in the jail cell?

Answer: Wallet and belt

Office Obie took their belts because he didn't want any hangings! He also removed the toilet seat (to prevent drownings) and the toilet paper so it couldn't be used as a makeshift rope for escape.
8. Who walked into court with the judge?

Answer: The seeing eye dog

When Obie saw the seeing eye dog, he realized that it was a "typical case of American blind justice". To Obie's dismay, the 27 8 X 10 color glossy photographs were never seen by the judge, who ruled that the offenders would pay a $50 fine and pick up the garbage (in the snow).
9. What did the author do the night before he went down to get his physical examination for the Army?

Answer: Got drunk

He got good and drunk the night before because he wanted to look and feel his best! (After hearing his description of the hardened criminals who joined him on the Group W bench, we can probably assume he wasn't the only one who was hungover that day.)
10. What is the room number of the psychiatrist's office?

Answer: Room 604

"Room 222" was a TV show that ran from 1969-1974. 704 was the house number of the Bunkers on "All in the Family" and the Munsters lived at 1313 Mockingbird Lane.
