Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of the 2006/07 season, Gretna played their first ever match in Europe, where they went up against Derry City in the Second Qualifying Round. The final aggregate score was 7-3 to Derry, but what was the score in the second leg?

Answer: Gretna 2-2 Derry City

When Grenta reached the 2006 Scottish Cup final, they were at the time unsure whether they'd play in Europe or not. But after Hearts qualified for the Champion's League, Gretna would go into the Uefa Cup no matter what happened. Despite losing out on penalties to the Edinburgh side, Gretna were still happy after the match, knowing Europe was just ahead of them. Unfortunatley, the didnt go very far.
2. Where did Gretna play their home leg against Derry City?

Answer: Fir Park

They played their home leg at Fir Park, where Motherwell play, despite their home stadium being Raydale Park. Rugby Park is where Kilmarnock play and Newlandsfield Park is where the partially unknown side Pollok FC play, so it isn't very likely the game would have been played there.
3. Raydale Park, Gretna's home, had a stadium capacity in 2007 which was more than the population of Gretna itself.

Answer: True

In 2001, Gretna's population was said to be just under 3,000. Raydale Park however, had a stadium capacity of over 3,000. Despite this, it isnt enough for SPL standards, so their current stadium is being replaced with one which will be up to SPL standards.
4. Which popular Gretna player went out on loan to Northampton Town in January 2007 until June 2007?

Answer: Kenny Deuchar

Kenny Deuchar went out on loan to the English side at the start of 2007. David Bingham and Mark Birch are both also out on loan, but David is at Stirling Albion and Mark is at Southport. Gavin Skelton, however, is not out on loan at all.
5. Gretna won promotion from the Scottish Third division in 2004/05, and then went on to win promotion to the First Division after winning the Second Division title the following season. In total, how many goals did Gretna score in the league during those two great seasons?

Answer: 227

Gretna scored an incredible 130 goals in 2004/05, which was just one goal too little from equaling the most ammount of goals scored in a season for a Brittish Club. They then followed up that high scoring season with 97 during the next season, adding up to 227 goals in two seasons.
6. Which of the following symbols cannot be found on Grena's team badge?

Answer: Well

The Gretna team badge/emblem consists of two thistles, which are found at either side of an anvil, which is in the middle of the emblem. Above that is a horseshoe and a stone bridge, and under that are the letters "Gretna F.C". There is no Well found on the badge.
7. In the 1990s, Grenta became the first Scottish team ever to compete in the English FA Cup.

Answer: False

They may have been the first Scottish team to compete in the cup since the 19th century, but back in the 1800s, teams such as Queen's Park and Rangers competed in the cup. Queen's Park reached the final twice, losing out both times.
8. What is Gretna FC's nickname?

Answer: The Black And Whites

They are known as the Black and Whites for their home colours, which are indeed Black and White. However, some people (the less brighter) get confused at this, as Gretna's away colours are infact blue and white.
9. Rowan Alexander was a former Gretna player, who took over as manager in 2000. Which of the following teams did he not play for before his time at Gretna.

Answer: St. Johnstone

Rowan had played for all of these sides before Gretna, except for St. Johnstone. He did however, play for St. Mirren for a short spell of his career.
10. In which year were Gretna formed?

Answer: 1946

The team were formed in 1946, but didnt seem to really kick their status as a football team off until the 1980s. This is when it began to change for the side. They started to win things outside of professional leagues, before finally being let into the Scottish League in 2002, thanks to the extinction of Airdrieonians.

It didnt take them long to settle in, and as you may have guesses, have become one of the most popular sides in Scotland.
