Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Matthew Dellavedova's professional jersey number when not involved in a trade, when added to Shawn Marion's Phoenix Suns-retired number, gives us whose draft day jersey number?

Answer: Jerami Grant

Dellavedova wore the #8 as a professional, while his #4 was retired at St Mary's College. He briefly had to wear #18 shortly after being traded *back* to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2018, but by 2019 was back in his original #8. Shawn Marion wore a few different numbers, but is most well known for 31, which was retired in his honor by the Phoenix Suns.

8 + 31 = 39

Jerami Grant chose the number of 39 because he was chosen 39th overall in the 2014 draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
2. Celtics legend Paul Pierce's number subtracted by Lakers legend Kobe Bryant's number from 2006-2016 would give us whose number?

Answer: Dennis Rodman

Pierce wore 34 for his entire collegiate and professional career, beginning as a Kansas Jayhawk before getting drafted by the Celtics, traded to the Nets, to the Clippers, then ending up as a Washington Wizard. The same cannot be said for Kobe Bryant. When coming to the league in 1996, he would don the #8 for exactly ten seasons. Then, in 2006, he transitioned to 24.

34 - 24 = 10

Dennis Rodman famously donned the #10 during his playing days. The Detroit Pistons would go on to retire the number.
3. Dwight Howard's biggest jersey number was 39. He held three other numbers as well. If we add those three numbers up, is it greater than or lesser than 39?

Answer: Greater

Howard began his career as #12, playing for the Orlando Magic, joining the Lakers, then the Houston Rockets and Charlotte Hornets. On joining the Atlanta Hawks, he would take on the #8, then eventually took on #21 with the Washington Wizards.

12 + 8 + 21 = 41, which is greater than 39.
4. If we take Kawhi Leonard's well-known number and multiply it by LeBron James' number when he was a member of the Miami Heat, we get the one-time number worn by an NBA legend, used as an emergency after his iconic #23 was suddenly stolen. This number has also been worn by over 450 other players across history. What number do we get?

Answer: 12

Kawhi Leonard's number is 2; if you knew Leonard's number, you could have immediately ruled out the three incorrect quiz answer options, since the NBA only uses whole numbers for jersey numbers, thus nothing could be multiplied by 2 and result in an odd number.

LeBron is well known for mostly being #23, a number he wore as a Cleveland Cavalier, and mostly as an LA Laker. However, he would exclusively be #6 as part of the Heat. When joining the Lakers, he began with the #6 before switching to #23 as a means to honor Bill Russell.

2 x 6 = 12

Michael Jordan is not normally associated with the #12. However, on February 14, 1990, his normal jersey with 23 on it was suddenly stolen. As an emergency response, he was forced to wear a nameless #12 for the first, and last, time of his career.
5. Tim Duncan's number divided by Dwayne Wade's number (when not with the Cleveland Cavaliers) would give us whose New York Knicks number?

Answer: Carmelo Anthony

Duncan wore the #21 his entire career. Dwayne Wade wore #3 with Miami Heat and the Chiago Bulls. As a New York Knick, "Melo" donned the #7.

21 ÷ 3 = 7

Dwayne Wade was, himself, a legendary baller who wore the #3. Unlike Tim Duncan, he ultimately did not spend his entire career in one place, but he did keep his number from 2004-2017.
6. Russell Westbrook's collegiate number and the same one he held with his first NBA team, the OKC Thunder, multiplied by Kevin Love's number as a Cleveland Cavalier, gives us whose number?

Answer: Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook's collegiate and OKC number was #0. It doesn't matter whose jersey number we multiply it with, it will give us exactly 0. Therefore, Westbrook's jersey number multiplied with literally anyone's number gives us Westbrook's jersey number.

Incidentally, if we took Kevin Love's Cavaliers jersey number and did the same thing, we would get the same results. That's because it's also jersey number 0! Love would go on to have his number retired by the Cavaliers.

Westbrook held the number 4 as a Washington Wizard and a Denver Nugget. Love was 42 in college as well as everywhere he played outside of Cleveland.
7. If we take Dillon Brooks' number as a Memphis Grizzly and divide it by his number with the Houston Rockets, do we get a whole number?

Answer: No

Brooks wore the #24 with Memphis and #9 with the Rockets. Of course, 24 cannot divide 9 evenly. It's almost able to produce the #3, which is the number Brooks would go on to wear with the Phoenix Suns.
8. The Charlotte Hornets franchise has exclusively retired the numbers of Bobby Phills and Dell Curry. If we add those numbers together, we get the number of a member of the Toronto Raptors' 2019 NBA Finals winning team. Whose?

Answer: Pascal Siakam

Bobby Phills' #13 was retired in February of 2000. It was done after he tragically passed away in a car accident. Phills' was the first to be retired by the team.

In March of 2026, Dell Curry's #30 was retired by the team. This came not only after his ten seasons of playing time in Charlotte, but also as he would serve as the team's TV analyst after his playing days.

13 + 30 = 43

Siakam would hold onto #43 for his entire stint as a Raptor, then later when he was traded to the Indiana Pacers.
9. If we take Deron Williams' non-Cavalier jersey number, multiply it by Derrick Rose's Chicago-retired number, then add it to DeMar DeRozan's Toronto Raptors number, which Hall-of-Fame player's number do we get?

Answer: Bailey Howell

Deron Williams, before his Cavaliers stint, played from 2005-2017, where he wore the #8. In Cleveland, he briefly had to switch to #31 due to Channing Frye already being #8.

Derrick Rose wore #1 for most of his career; like Williams, he had to give the number up during a brief stint in Cleveland, but this was otherwise his number. So much so that the Chicago Bulls retired #1 in his honor.

DeMar DeRozan was the #10 when drafted by the Toronto Raptors.

8 × 1 + 10 = 18

Bailey Howell wore the #18 for most of his career, spanning 1959-71. His entire Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons stints saw him in this number, before his brief stay with the Washington Bullets forced him off of it.
10. Alright, last question, let's make it a hard one! Miami Heat great Udonis Haslem's number, minus Golden State Warriors legend Steph Curry's number gives us Mookie Blaylock's career long number. Then, if multiplied by Chris Paul's career long number, whose number do we get?

Answer: Terry Porter

Udonis Haslem played his entire twenty-year career in Miami, where he never gave up the #40.

Likewise, Steph Curry's number as a Golden State Warrior, where he won multiple titles and was drafted, never changed over from being #30.

40 - 30 = 10

Mookie Blaylock is noteworthy in jersey history as the first NBA player to wear the number 10 exclusively and never, ever change that specific number. He did this during his career of 1989-2002, playing for the Nets, Hawks and then Warriors.

Chris Paul wore the #3 for his entire career. Considering how many teams he played for (7; Hornets, Clippers, Rockets, Thunder, Suns, Warriors, Spurs) it's quite fortunate he never had to change!

10 x 3 = 30

Terry Porter is a longtime Portland Trailblazer (1985-95) whose #30 would go on to be retired. He would return to Portland 26 years later as a collegiate basketball coach in the University of Portland.
