4. Which of Ireland's four provinces is traditionally the strongest part of the country for Hurling?

Answer: Munster

Munster is the most competitive province, with five of the six counties in it having strong Hurling teams. The annual Munster Hurling Championship is widely anticipated and never fails to disappoint. Leinster is the second strongest Hurling province, while the standard of Hurling in Connacht and Ulster and the number of top counties is "much lower".
5. While quite different to it, which of these sports is a bit like Hurling?

Answer: Hockey

Hurling is a stick and ball game, played on a large field, with the idea to score into the goals at the ends of the field. Hurling has jokingly been described as "a cross between hockey and murder". Other sports it has been compared to include lacrosse and shinty.
6. Hurling is played by men, but what is the women's version known as?

Answer: Camogie

The fundamental rules are almost identical. Amongst some of the differences that Camogie has, the matches are 10 minutes shorter (at 60 minutes vs. 70 minutes for the men), the playing area is smaller, the players wear more protective gear and playing equipment is lighter.
7. Which three counties dominate the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Roll of Honour?

Answer: Kilkenny, Cork and Tipperary.

The so-called "Big Three" dominate the roll of honour. In 2025 Kilkenny have won their 36th All-Ireland Championship (at that time Cork had won 30 and Tipperary had won 28). The next nearest county was Limerick on 13.
8. Galway is not in Leinster, but have won the Leinster Hurling Championship.

Answer: True

Leinster is a province in Ireland. Galway, located in the province of Connacht, are a traditionally strong Hurling county. Because of the very low standard of Hurling in the other counties in Connacht, Galway were admitted into the Leinster Championship ine 2009, where they can get more competitive matches.
9. Micheal O'Muirecheartaigh (1930-2024), a legendary radio commentator, described which two places as "neither a Hurling stronghold"?

Answer: Fermanagh and Fiji

While commentating on a match featruring Seán Óg Ó hAilpín, he said: "His father's from Fermanagh, his mother's from Fiji. Neither a hurling stronghold." Fermanagh is a county in Ireland, where Hurling is not strong. It would not be strong in Fiji either..

These were the places where Seán Óg's parents were from. He was born in Fiji in 1977, moving to Sydney in 1980 and then to Ireland eight years later. Living in Cork, which is a stronghold of Hurling, he took up the sport and eventually captained Cork when they won the All-Ireland Hurling Championship in 2005. His acceptance speech at the end of the match was delivered almost exclusively in the Irish language.
10. What is the name of the trophy given to the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Champions?

Answer: Liam McCarthy Cup
