The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) was established in 1848 and is the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. The school shares its moniker with one of the nicknames of the state itself, although the Badger name actually referred to local lead-mine workers rather than the animal. UW's mascot IS an animal badger though, called Bucky. UW has been a member of the Big Ten Conference since 1896.

The Badgers have won numerous national titles with particular success in both men's and women's ice hockey and cross country.
2. Lakeland University is known by what fishy nickname?

Answer: Muskies

Lakeland University was founded in 1862 in Herman, Sheboygan County. Muskie is a shortened name for a fish called the muskelunge, and the school adopted this nickname in the 1930's when their athletics director caught a muskie whilst fishing, and admired its fighting spirit. Lakeland is a member of the NCAA Division III Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
