While Ben makes dinner, he has the radio playing. In Spain, it appears that Generalissimo Francisco Franco's body has been robbed from his grave. He doesn't listen too intently to the news though, since his buzzer goes off. It turns out to be Ashley, one of Kira's friends, who happened to be the only other survivor of their travel party on the plane crash only a few months earlier.

Dinner turns out to be delicious with Ben having cooked everything from scratch. It only appears that way though-- he reveals that the freezer is stocked full with sympathy meals from friends and family, still chilling from the funeral.

Answer: Hypnic jerks

Ben has to ask how Ashley's been doing and she brushes off the situation with some dark humour, explaining she has to be a bit cynical, considering the circumstances. She tells Ben to lighten up a bit; that he took things so seriously is why Kira was able to walk all over him when she was still alive.

Ashley asks the same question in kind. He's been sleeping poorly-- he's suffering odd nightmares and he's jumpy. It's like his head's afraid to hit the pillow. Ashley notes that it's a trauma response, and perfectly natural, considering. He's enrolled in therapy and he has a job again; she says that she's eager to move on. After pouring glasses of wine, they cheers to their health.

After dinner, Ben and Ashley recount what they can of the crash with Ashley vividly recalling the moment they hit a microburst of bad air over what she is certain was the Bermuda Triangle. When the side of the plane sheared off, she was one of the group that was sucked out into the night, plummeting to the ocean below. She doesn't know what happened next; she woke up from a coma three weeks later. Not one of her thirteen friends survived. Most people didn't, save for her, Ben, a few others, and one of the pilots.

Ashley's doctor explained to her that the only thing that saved her from the impact was the Xanax bars she took while they were still on the jetway. She never braced for impact; she ragdolled. She wasn't left unscathed either. One of her more damaging injuries had to be repaired with pig's skin. She considers that it could've been much worse.

Answer: Manipulative

Ashley calls Ben out for his kindness, letting him know that she heard of what he did for the families of those who died in the crash. In the weeks after, he called every one of them, checking in to make sure they were alright. He claims it's survivor's guilt, but they were all touched by it.

She has to ask Ben, bluntly, if he misses Kira. When she presses into what he misses most, he acknowledges that it was the sex and their togetherness. They were only together three months, after all. Ashley acknowledges that Kira was manipulative in spite of this. In fact, her body feels a bit of relief in knowing that someone as mean as Kira is dead and gone and out of her life. It's harsh, but she heard about the lack of people at her funeral.

Answer: Ocean's Thirteen

Ben makes a bit light of the conversation about Kira, intending not to speak ill of his late girlfriend, and instead of agreeing about her manipulative nature (claiming she knew what she wanted), he notes that she was simply a force. After starting to date, they moved in together quickly. He can't put his finger on why he fell for her so hard.

Ashley casually puts an end to the conversation, realizing that the wine she's drinking is making her loopy on account of the antibiotics she's been taking. She suggests they watch a movie instead. On the couch, when she tries to pick a movie, she nearly lands on "Ocean's Thirteen". Yeah, thirteen again-- and Ben's mood sours.

The movie choice leads Ben to need to face his triskaidekaphobia once again because there, even on the select screen, he has a vision of something terrifying that jolts him out of his seat. He explains to Ashley that it's been a fear he's had since he was a kid when, one day, he saw the number on a moisturizer advertisement and set off alarm bells in his head.

It's okay though, Ashley says, because she suffers from it as well-- it's why she took all that Xanax. It was flight 13 on Friday the 13th, she notes, and Kira knew her whole story, and all the reasons justifying her fear, and pushed her to join the party anyways. Kira never told Ben that Ashley shared the same fear, even though she was aware of the link or, maybe worse, she was too manipulative to let that info slip.

Answer: A mass murder

The reason behind Kira's triskaidekaphobia is another instance in her life where she faced deep trauma, and it happened in May 2020. During the COVID pandemic, while everyone was still stuck in lockdown, it was supposed to be her cousin's destination dream wedding. Instead, most of her friends were on Zoom, and a very small amount of them had a luau in a New Jersey backyard.

It wasn't an enjoyable event. After one guest complained about slaughtering a pig for the event, the party-goers were set upon by the infamous serial killer known as the Piggy Man, who methodically killed them one by one. Ashley was the only survivor. Thirteen died, butchered like hogs at a slaughterhouse.

When Ashley's story is finished, she lets Ben known that he can unpack his own fear. He's candid about his jumbled memories, but it starts with his mother dying in childbirth on Friday the 13th. His dad wasn't equipped to raise him, but there were enough people in his life to make it work. Everyone in his community was kind, fortunately.

When Ben was 6, an emergency occurred in his backyard when a neighbour, as it seemed, fell onto a knife, impaling her in the torso. His father put her in his car and sped off to the hospital, but as he'd been drinking, his blood alcohol would later be registered at 0.13%. The police would only determine this after the crash that took his life.

After both of Ben's parents died, he was placed into the foster care system, living with six sets of parents, each a different problematic condition. It took years before one woman, Martha, turned out to be the ideal mother figure for him. That house was the first home he had... until she died on his 13th birthday. It was pancreatic cancer.

At the end, Ben was with Martha, seeing her off and showing his gratitude. It's why he became a hospice worker when he grew up.

Kira, he admits, was the last person he felt like he was at home with. He apologizes for the sad story, but Ashley responds by kissing him.

Ben and Ashley's kiss turns into a more passionate evening as, with an unspoken gesture, the two make their way to the bedroom and spend the night. When morning finally breaks, Ben awakens to find Ashley still there with him. As she begins to dress, re-covering her scars, she asks him to wait there and she'll be back.

He decides to get up to take a shower, and he catches her there watching, preparing to hop in. As he gets out of the shower, though, Ashley spies a marking at the bottom of Ben's back. It turns out to be a brand, and neither of them knew it was there. It's the numbers 616. And naturally, those add up to 13.
