Answer: The Grenadines

In their therapist's waiting room, Ben counts the objects on the table (thirteen magazines) while his partner, Kira, sits silently. He gets up to grab a coffee to find thirteen mugs on the side table. A clock reads 3:13.

When they finally step into the doctor's office, Kira unloads about her frustration. Her birthday is coming up, but Ben isn't willing to put in the effort to be involved, mainly because of the implications; if it were any other year it'd be fine. But her birthday falls on Friday the 13th, and 13 is her lucky number, and she has 13 girlfriends going, and there are 13 islands in the Grenadines, and on and on. Kira is willing to break up to prove her point.

As the therapist explains, Kira has triskaidekaphilia; she's obsessed with the number thirteen as a positive influence in her life. She understands if it's a big step in the relationship. Ben acknowledges that it wouldn't normally be a bridge too far, but he has triskaidekaphobia.

Answer: Yes

The triskaidekaphobia is a major call-out to have to contend with, but Ben puts his best foot forward, managing it for Kira's sake and treating it as a form of PTSD. On the day of the expected trip, while Kira casually heads to the airport and checks in at Gate A13 with her thirteen girlfriends, Ben pushes himself to rush to the airport, run to the gate, and join his girlfriend.

On the plane, the girls try to put Kira at ease by reminding her that they're going to have the best birthday party ever-- all things thirteen. It doesn't much help.

As Ben approaches the desk, he realizes that not only is the Gate A13, but the fight number is IA013. He's made it on time, fortunately, and despite his reservations, he rushes onto the plane and takes his seat, the last person to board. What's the worst that could happen?

As night falls on flight IA013 and the passengers settle down for the red eye, Ben looks out the window to see a storm starting outside. The pilots ask the flight attendants to take their seats as they hit heavy turbulence, and it's only moments later before an explosion rocks first class.

Answer: Cordelia Goode

At Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, witch supreme Cordelia Goode teaches young student Ophelia how best to levitate a glass orb while Madison Montgomery notes her approval from the piano bench. All of them are interrupted, though, when a sharp gust of wind, accompanied by thunder and lightning, blows open the shutters of the sitting room.

Cordelia senses it immediately-- a harbringer of their doom; terrifying, vengeful death is on the way. Madison makes light of the situation, but Cordelia is certain: something wicked this way comes.

Elsewhere, Constance Langdon wheels an elderly man through a luxurious manor. It's time, she says as he rises from his seat, to shuffle off. She departs as he walks to the fireplace, but he changes course and proceeds to the window instead, vomiting a gout of blood.

On Flight IA013, Ben grips his seat in terror and tries to remain calm, but the side of the plane shears off, taking a number of Kira's girlfriends with it.

Answer: The Apollyon

One month after the fateful plane disaster, Ben finds himself at the Apollyon Building in New York City, there to see the caregiver. The concierge directs him, unfortunately, to the thirteenth floor, which brings Ben no joy. He remarks that there are no thirteenth floors in residential buildings the city, but the man at the desk begs to differ since the person he's there to meet owns all the space on that floor and kept it as such.

When Ben steps into the newly-renovated space, he finds a rich, ornate apartment filled with numerologically-minded decor. The zodiac is displayed on the ceiling in the lobby; 'The Last Supper' is on a sitting room wall. He spends a short time mitigating his worry by counting.

Answer: Nighttime attendant

While counting the figures seated in Da Vinci's masterpiece and finding thirteen seated at the table, Ben is met by Constance Langdon, who steps into greet him and comment on the piece. He notes it's a very nice recreation, but Constance begs to differ-- the one in Milan is the copy, and this is the true masterpiece.

Ben introduces himself as the nighttime attendant before shaking Constance's hand, but she's taken aback by the gesture, finding that he reminds her of a boy she used to know. After her rejection, his body was found washed up on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. In his despair, he leapt from the causeway bridge. But that's an aside; there's more to discuss.

Constance soon takes a bit more of a liking to Ben, partly because she's able to relate her own past to his present situation (even going so far as to comfortably suggest her father never really liked Italian-born men like Ben, not even letting them work for him). But before long, they make their way down the halls to the owner's chambers.

In the bedroom, Mr. Nas, the patient, is in bed while a man in a white lab coat, Mr. Phibes, draws tinctures of his blood-- thirteen of them. Mr. Nas is thirteen years from one hundred, Constance notes, but what a life it's been; he's been a philanthropist, a poet, and a prophet. Nowadays, clearly things have changed. Age is the ultimate cruelty.

Answer: Snakes

Ben has to ask-- was Mr. Nas abandoned by his family for late-stage hospice care? Constance is shocked by the question; it's absolutely not the case. Mr. Nas, she says, is loved by them. As the final of the thirteen vials of blood is drawn, Ben notes that it's a crazy amount to take, but it's in the service contract; Mr. Nas wants all of the stats and markers, Mr. Phibes notes, even though he's a vegetable. No one notices as Mr. Phibes places the vials into his case, which happens to be filled with dangerous snakes in the bottom.

He departs once he's gotten what he needs while Constance gives the patient a sponge bath.

Answer: Two

While walking Mr. Nas through the apartment, Constance has to ask Ben about the plane crash. It was only a month ago, and yet here he is. Her only question, really, is 'how?'

Ben notes that the crash was a bit of a miracle, all things considered, at least for him. The plane took a nosedive, but the pilots righted it at the last minute before it hit the ocean. Constance read all about it on the Yahoo News. Seat 13F managed to make it; and he didn't even have a scratch on him, somehow. Kira died in the crash, and so did twelve of her friends. Only one-- 13B-- also survived. Thirteen souls were taken. The universe must have something in store for him, Constance notes. Signs and wonders.

As Constance runs Mr. Nas his bath, Ben assists by placing him, carefully, into the tub. She dumps extra Jean Naté After Bath Splash into the water and comments that it makes the wash smell like 1983, the year her daughter was born... or so she thinks. Ben asks if her daughter is still alive, and Constance says that all of her children are, fortunately, alive and thriving-- a lie.

Ben does the dirty work on this sponge bath, becoming unnerved as Constance calls out the orifices he should be cleaning. He's worked in hospice care for five years, he says, and not once has he been asked to follow this procedure to her odd specifications. Mr. Nas demands it though; it's in the contract.

When he's done there, Constance asks that he head down to the store to get her a pack of cigarettes if he would be so kind. She'll change his linens in the meantime.

Answer: Benito Mussolini

While the news rattles off about droughts, a pandemic, and a series of cemetery break-ins in Italy that have led to Mussolini's remains being stolen, Ben looks up how many mucous membranes are in the human body (unsurprisingly, thirteen). A loud banging in the apartment catches his attention, and he runs to Mr. Nas' room to investigate, but nothing seems particularly out of place... except for the missing patient.

A fire roars in the hearth when Ben enters, and he hears the creaking of the floorboards next to the bed, but nothing is there-- he even looks under the bed. Experiencing a panic attack, he lays down for a breather and closes his eyes, but when he opens them, he finds Mr. Nas laying next to him, watching.
