Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beta III landing party

Answer: O'Neil

The USS Enterprise was investigating the century-old mystery of what happened to a starship, the Archon, when it was investigating a pre-warp planet Beta III. It sent down a two-man landing party -- Sulu and O'Neil -- in local clothing which resembled late 19th century Earth clothing. They were discovered to be outsiders, and were chased by the planet's lawgivers, imposing figures dressed in brown robes and carrying power staffs. O'Neil panicked and ran away before Sulu was cornered. Sulu was beamed away just after he was touched by a lawgiver's staff. Once beamed aboard, he was in a strange, peaceful state, obviously mentally altered by the lawgiver.

O'Neil is later found to be among a group of townspeople who are mentally commanded to attack them. He is incapacitated, and Kirk decides to take him along, as he can't bring himself to abandon one of his crew. ("Star Trek" episode "The Return of the Archons")

O'Neil has another appearance in "Star Trek". This time, he is manning the transporter, beaming a landing party over to a mysteriously dead USS Defiant (NCC-1764). Later in the episode, the Tholians attack the Enterprise for trespassing in their space. O'Neil tries to repair damage to the transporter caused by the attack, but calls on LCDR Scott to assist him. ("Star Trek" episode "The Tholian Web")

O'Neil was played by Sean Morgan.
2. Chief Medical Officer on USS Cerritos

Answer: T'Ana

Dr. T'Ana was a female Caitian who was the chief medical officer aboard the USS Cerritos, with a rank of commander. She often wore a light blue lab coat over her standard Starfleet uniform. She had a questionable bedside manner, and swore quite a lot. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks")

T'Ana was voiced by Gillian Vigman. Vigman also voiced other incidental voices as needed. She also played Stephanie in the movies "The Hangover" and "The Hangover Part II".
3. Klingon Chancellor poisoned by Duras

Answer: K'mpec

K'mpec was the longest-serving Chancellor of the Klingon High Council. He discovered that the father of politician Duras, Ja'rod, had betrayed the colonists on Khitomer Outpost. Knowing that this would create discord and possible civil war, he decided to accuse Worf's father, Mogh, since he was dead and his dishonor wouldn't affect his son, Worf, since Worf was living the life of a Federation citizen. However, Worf's younger brother, Kurn, was still alive. He brought this news of Mogh's unjust dishonor to Worf. Acknowledging he was the son of Mogh, this brought the threat of death to Worf. Instead, Worf had a plan that would both save Duras's honor and Worf's life. He accepted discommendation (a form of public shaming), and returned to the Enterprise-D. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Sins of the Father")

Later, K'mpec discovered that he was being slowly poisoned to death, and suspected the two main rivals for his position once he died: Duras or Gowron. He named Jean-Luc Picard as the Arbiter of Succession to investigate who had poisoned him. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Reunion")

K'mpec was portrayed by Charles Cooper. Cooper also played Klingon General Korrd. Korrd had had an illustrious career, but he started to decline in his reputation. He was eventually assigned as the representative to Nimbus III, a planet with the high-minded ideal of governing this planet jointly by the Romulans, Federation, and Klingons. This ideal failed, and the planet fell into disrepute. (movie "Star Trek: The Final Frontier")
4. Orion Starfleet ensign/lieutenant j.g. on USS Cerritos

Answer: D'Vana Tendi

Ensign (later LTJG) D'Vana Tendi was an Orion Starfleet officer, one of the very few due to Orion not being a Federation member. She was very enthusiastic about her duties, with a deep love of science. She was initially assigned as a medical assistant under Dr. T'Ana. T'Ana recognized her potential and transferred her to senior science officer training.

It was eventually revealed that she had trained as an assassin for her family in the Orion Syndicate, and is very skilled at covert activities. She also is a bit embarrassed about coming from a thieving culture. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks")

D'Vana Tendi was voiced by Noël Wells. She was a cast member of "Saturday Night Live" in its 39th season.
5. High-ranking councilor of the Klingon High Council

Answer: K'Tal

K'Tal was a high-ranking councilor of the Klingon High Council. He oversaw the ascension of Gowron to the chancellorship after K'mpec was assassinated. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Redemption")

K'Tal was portrayed by Ben Slack.
6. Irish holodeck character

Answer: Maggie O'Halloran

Maggie O'Halloran was a holodeck character in Tom Paris's "Fair Haven" program, which modeled a late 19th-century Irish seaside town. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Fair Haven")

Harry Kim once was going on a date with her, when Paris decided to play a joke on him. Paris accessed the holodeck controls and turned Maggie into a cow just as Harry was about to kiss her. Unfortunately, a couple of other characters saw this transformation. Instead of being oblivious to holographic changes, these characters believed Tom Paris and his friends were witches, starting a panic in the town. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Spirit Folk")

Maggie O'Halloran was played by Henriette Ivanans.
7. Vulcan officer that served on USS Enterprise NX-01

Answer: T'Pol

T'Pol was a science officer from Vulcan. When Starfleet (pre-Federation) was ready to explore the galaxy further with their new warp-5-capable starship USS Enterprise (NX-01), they needed star charts to go through regions that the Vulcans had explored. So in exchange for those star charts, Subcommander T'Pol was assigned to the position of executive officer and science officer aboard the Enterprise. ("Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Broken Bow")

Though initially suspected of being a spy, she actually performed her duties admirably. After the Xindi attack, the Enterprise was directed to explore the Delphic Expanse to find the Xindi and discover why they attacked without provocation. T'Pol was ordered to return to Earth and continue her diplomatic duties. She resisted, and resigned her commission and remained aboard the Enterprise. ("Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "The Expanse")

T'Pol was portrayed by actress Jolene (neé Blalock). She also played T'Pol's great-grandmother T'Mir in the flashback episode "Carbon Creek". She returned to voice an alternate version of T'Pol in "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Fissure Quest".
8. Andorian officer on USS Cerritos

Answer: Jennifer Sh'reyan

Jennifer Sh'reyan was initially just an off-screen voice, who showed irritation at Mariner. She was just referred to as "Jen", belying the fact that she was an Andorian. She later rescued Mariner when the latter fell out of the ship when they had to strip the ship of its outer hull. They then realized that they were attracted to each other and started dating. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episodes "No Small Parts", "First First Contact")

Jennifer Sh'reyan was voiced by Lauren Lapkus. She has appeared in shows "Orange Is The New Black" and "The Big Bang Theory".
9. USS Cerritos officer that ascended to a higher plane

Answer: O'Connor

O'Connor was an engineering officer on the USS Cerritos. He practiced meditation and built a complex sand mandala in order to ascend to a higher plane. D'Vana Tendi accidentally ruined his mandala and earned his ire. She tried to make it up to him, suggesting other rituals to help him in his ascension. During a shipwide crisis, he admitted to her that he was just faking it; he just wanted to stand out among other lower deckers. Tendi forgave him, and they kissed. He then started to ascend for real. But instead of a pleasant experience, it was painful. He saw a universal truth, but disappeared before he could relay it to Tendi. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Moist Vessel")

In the last episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "The New Next Generation", O'Connor returns, dropping out of a portal into the USS Cerritos's sick bay.

O'Connor was voiced by Haley Joel Osment. Osment is best remembered as Cole Sear, the young boy who could see dead people in the movie "The Sixth Sense". He also played Forrest Gump's son, also named Forrest, in "Forrest Gump".
10. Andorian Imperian Guard commander

Answer: Thy'lek Shran

Thy'lek Shran was an Andorian commander who had several encounters with the USS Enterprise (NX-01). Initially suspicious and adversarial, he slowly began to respect Captain Archer and humans in general. ("Star Trek: Enterprise")

Thy'lek Shran was played by the excellent actor Jeffrey Combs. Combs is well-known for portraying nearly a dozen characters in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", "Star Trek: Voyager", "Star Trek: Enterprise", and "Star Trek: Lower Decks".
11. Klingon messiah who united houses to wage war against the Federation

Answer: T'Kuvma

T'Kuvma was a 23rd-century Klingon warrior, leader of his house, and a follower of the ancient teachings of Kahless. A staunch traditionalist and Klingon nationalist, he was deeply suspicious of the expanding United Federation of Planets, which he regarded as a threat to Klingon culture and identity. He believed in unifying the feuding Klingon Great Houses against the Federation. ("Star Trek: Discovery" episode "The Vulcan Hello")

T'Kuvma was played by Chris Obi.
12. Caitian communications officer on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701

Answer: M'Ress

LT M'Ress was a female Caitian operations officer on USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), specializing in communications. ("Star Trek: The Animated Series")

M'Ress was voiced by Majel Barrett. Barrett was the wife of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry. Her other "Star Trek" roles include Nurse Christine Chapel ("Star Trek", "Star Trek: The Animated Series"), Lwaxana Troi ("Star Trek: The Next Generation"), Narrator ("Star Trek: Voyager"), and the voice of Federation computers on several "Star Trek" productions.
13. Chief engineer on Deep Space Nine

Answer: O'Brien

Senior Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien was a career enlisted officer with a long, storied history in Starfleet. He served on the USS Rutledge during the Federation-Cardassian War, the USS Enterprise-D as transporter chief, chief of operations on Deep Space 9, and as a professor at Starfleet Academy on Earth. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

In the far future, O'Brien is considered the most important figure in all of Starfleet history. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Temporal Edict")

O'Brien was played by veteran actor Colm Meaney. Meaney played a doomed airline pilot in "Die Hard 2".
14. Klingon flag officer blood bonded to Beckett Mariner

Answer: K'orin

General K'orin was a Klingon flag officer who lived during the late 24th century. On one occasion, he was escorted to Tulgana IV by Ensigns Brad Boimler and Mariner Beckett via shuttle. Unknown to Boimler, K'orin and Beckett knew each other and started reminiscing and drinking. When they landed, Boimler and Beckett stepped out of the shuttle. K'orin then took the opportunity to steal the shuttle in search of some gagh. After following clues all over Tulgana IV, they found K'orin and the shuttle in front of the Federation embassy, passed out drunk. They dragged him to the front door of the embassy and left him for the embassy staff to handle. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Envoys")

Years later, K'orin was serving on the Klingon Oversight Council. He and fellow member Enaj outvoted Bargh to restore the captaincy of Ma'ah. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "A Farewell to Farms")

K'orin was voiced by Jess Harnell. Harnell was the voice of Wakko Warner on the show "Animaniacs".
15. Ancestor of Captain Janeway

Answer: Shannon O'Donnell

Shannon O'Donnell was an ancestor of Kathryn Janeway's and her greatest inspiration for joining Starfleet. She was also a consulting engineer on the Millennium Gate project that was completed in 2012 in Portage Creek, Indiana on Earth.

Eventually, Shannon O'Donnell married Henry Janeway and together they had several children and grandchildren and lived in Indiana. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "11:59")

Kate Mulgrew portrayed Shannon O'Donnell, who, of course, also played Capt Janeway. Henry Janeway was played by Kevin Tighe, most widely known for his part as paramedic Roy DeSoto on the TV show "Emergency!"
