Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Engineer of the USS Protostar

Answer: Jankom Pog

Jankom Pog is a young Tellarite engineer. He had been put on a Tellarite sleeper vessel in the mid-22nd century. He was accidentally revived early, then proceeded to fix the damaged systems. He then discovered that there wasn't enough oxygen to support him and the crew in suspended animation, so he left the ship.

He was then captured by Kazon slavers, who sold him to the Tars Lamora prison colony. It was there that he and others found the hidden USS Protostar and activated it in order to escape the colony.

Jankom Pog was voiced by Jason Mantzoukas. Mantzoukas is known for his roles as Derek on "The Good Place" and Adrian Pimento on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine".
2. Eighth host of the Dax symbiont

Answer: Jadzia

Jadzia believed that she was the seventh host of the Dax symbiont. However, Dax had been hosted by Joran Dax (né Belar), a musician who became a serial killer. Dax was removed after Joran was captured, which killed him. Dax was then placed in Kurzon, with its memory modified so that it wouldn't remember being hosted by Joran.

Jadzia was played by Terry Farrell. When she was cast as the Trill/Symbiont, she went in for make-up. They were trying to make her up similarly to how Franc Luz was made-up as Odan in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Host". Someone complained to Michael Westmore, the make-up designer and artist for many Star Trek productions, saying, "What did you do to her head, she used to be beautiful?" So instead, they used spots similar to what they gave Famke Janssen in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Perfect Mate". This make-up was used for all Trill characters after this.
3. Scientist who devised a weapon of mass destruction that killed everyone on the moon Rinax

Answer: Dr. Jetrel

Dr. Ma'Bor Jetrel was the head of team of Haakonian Order scientists who made a weapon to use against the Talaxian colony on the moon Rinax -- the metreon cascade. After the war, he was hated by both Talaxians and some Haakonians for developing a weapon of mass destruction.

Dr. Ma'Bor Jetrel was played by James Sloyan. Sloyan is one of several actors to play multiple roles on Star Trek productions. These include: Adminal Alidar Jarok (Romulan), Mora Pol (Bajoran), and K'mtar/Alexander (Klingon).
4. LCDR Data's "mother"

Answer: Juliana

Juliana Tainer was partner and wife to Dr. Noonian Soong. On Omicron Theta, they worked on artificial lifeforms. Their crowning achievement was the android Data.

The Juliana that was seen on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Inheritance" was actually another Soong-type android, based on the real Juliana Tainer. When she and Dr. Soong fled Omicron Theta when a crystalline entity attacked, she was injured and later died. In his grief, Soong created an even-more advanced android to replace his wife. She emitted life signs, had physiological changes that mimicked aging. Juliana the android eventually left Soong, just as the real Juliana would have. She then remarried, and then met Data when the Enterprise-D came to help her and her husband on a planetary project.

Juliana was played by Fionnula Flanagan. She has played two other roles in "Star Trek": V'Lar (Vulcan) and Enina Tandro (Klaestron).
5. Starfleet Engineer assigned to USS Voyager

Answer: Joe Carey

Lt. Joe Carey was the senior Starfleet engineering officer on USS Voyager after it was whisked away to the Delta Quadrant. (I'm unsure if there was a more senior officer who was killed by the Caretaker's seizing of the ship.) He came to blows with B'Elanna Torres over a conflict in Engineering. He was next in line to be named chief engineer, but Chakotay convinced Janeway to give the position to B'Elanna.

Carey appeared four times in the first season of "Star Trek: Voyager", then once each season for seasons 5, 6, and 7. His appearances in seasons 5 and 6 were in time-travel scenes from the past.

In his last appearance in episode "Friendship One", he was being held hostage on a planet that had been found by an Earth probe - Friendship 1 - from the 21st century. The probe was designed to share information on warp drive and anti-matter power. The planet used this technology poorly, and the planet was decimated by a nuclear-style war, leaving the planet a barely-habitable rock. Survivors, led by a man named Verin - realizing that Voyager represented the civilization that sent - took the Voyager away team hostage to try and negotiate with Voyager to move the remaining people to a new world. Supposedly as a sign of good faith, Verin allowed one of the away team, Carey, to beam back to Voyager, using transport enhancers. But just before Carey started to be beamed up, Verin shot him. Carey arrived on Voyager dead.

Carey was played by Josh Clark. Clark also appeared in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as a tactical officer in the episode "Justice".
6. Yeoman to Capt. Kirk. Rose to Commander under Capt. Sulu

Answer: Janice Rand

Janice Rand was a yeoman to Capt. Kirk in the early days of his tenure as the USS Enterprise's captain. She seemed to have an attraction to Kirk, which may have waned after his transporter-formed evil half attacked her.

Through the years, Rand attained officer rank, eventually becoming a commander on USS Excelsior under Captain Sulu as communications officer. It was during this assignment that the Klingon moon Praxis exploded, catching the USS Excelsior in its blast wave.

Janice Rand was played by Grace Lee Whitney. She was in eight of the first 14 episodes of "Star Trek" that were broadcast. A combination of factors led to her contract not being extended. Writers weren't sure of what to do with her, she herself didn't want to become "Kirk's woman", and there was a sexual assault by an unnamed executive that led to her dismissal.

Whitney returned to "Star Trek" universe in four of the first six "Star Trek" movies, as well as an appearance on "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Flashback", where Tuvok is remembering an incident (the Praxis explosion) when he served on the USS Excelsior.
7. Orphaned boy on Enterprise-D

Answer: Jeremy Aster

Jeremy Aster's mother, Marla, was a member of an away team led by Lt. Worf. She was killed by an explosive device left from the war that had decimated the planet they were exploring. Worf felt responsible for her death and Jeremy initially hated Worf. Further complicating the situation was that a non-corporeal life form sensed Jeremy's pain, and recreated itself as Marla, also duplicating their home on Earth in his quarters. Eventually, it even offered to take Jeremy to the surface of the planet to live. But Wesley Crusher, Capt Picard, and Deanna Troi convinced Jeremy that he'd be better off staying with humans. The non-corporeal being agreed, and let Jeremy go.

Worf later performed the R'uustai ceremony, making Jeremy a member of the House of Mogh, and basically Worf's little brother. Ironically, Jeremy is never seen again.

Jeremy Aster was played by Gabriel Damon. Damon played Hob in "Robocop 2".
8. First captain of USS Enterprise-B

Answer: John Harriman

Harriman was the captain on the USS Enterprise-B on its maiden voyage out of drydock. On this voyage were three officers from the USS Enterprise (no A, B, C, or D): Kirk, Chekov, and Scott. While they were out, they got a distress call from two ships that were carrying El-Aurian refugees. They were trapped in a phenomenon called The Nexus. Unfortunately, items such as photon torpedoes, tractor beam, or a medical staff were not on board, which would have helped in the rescue efforts; they wouldn't be delivered until the following Tuesday. Nonetheless, they did their best to rescue the refugees. They rescued one ship's passengers, but the other was destroyed. In doing this, the Enterprise-B also became trapped. Scott devised a way to alter the deflector to help them escape. Kirk went below decks to make the necessary changes. Their modifications worked, except that a last tendril of energy hit the Enterprise-B right were Kirk was in deflector control. He was believed killed. ("Star Trek: Generations")

Captain John Harriman was played by Alan Ruck. Ruck is known for playing Cameron Frye in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", and Stuart Mondek in "Spin City".
9. Sixth host of the Dax Symbiont

Answer: Joran

Joran Belar, a musician, was a candidate for symbiont joining, but was supposedly dropped in his second year. However, he was actually joined to Dax after Torias Dax was critically injured in a shuttle accident. His prior personality was described by his brother as having a volatile temperament and cold personality. After joining, Joran became increasingly violent and unstable. He ended up murdering three people. Dax was removed from Joran, which killed him. Dax's memory was modified so that it didn't remember its time in Joran.

Joran's joining was proof that more of the general population of Trills could be successfully joined. This information was covered up, both because it would make symbionts a commodity instead of an honor to be joined to one, and also because of the unfortunate result of joining Joran and Dax.

Jadzia, Dax's host two hosts later than Joran, started expressing an unknown talent for playing the piano. This was a sign that the memory block on Dax was fading, and causing it trauma. The block was removed, and Jadzia then reconciled the memories of Joran.

After Jadzia's death, Dax was joined to Ezri Tegan, an untrained Trill. She was training to be a counselor, and returned to Deep Space 9 as such. It was here that a serial killer was loose, using an unconventional weapon. Ezri Dax performed the Rite of Emergence, which allowed her to communicate with the memories of Joran more directly. She figured that to catch a murderer required a murderer. Joran did help her catch the murderer, but he also was egging her on to simply kill the suspect. Ezri then sent Joran back into her memories, knowing that now he was a part of her personality as were all the other previous hosts.

In Joran's appearances, he was portrayed by Jeff Magnus McBride and Leigh J. McCloskey. He was also personified by Avery Brooks when Jadzia performed the zhian'tara.
10. First Officer of the USS Cerritos

Answer: Jack Ransom

Jack Ransom was the first officer of the USS Cerritos under Captain Carol Freeman. Upon her transfer to Starbase 80, he became captain of the USS Cerritos.

(There was another Star Trek character named Ransom - Rudy Ransom - who was the captain of the USS Equinox when it was hijacked by the Caretaker and brought to the Delta Quadrant. But there's been no canon mention that he was related to Jack Ransom.)

Jack Ransom is voiced by Jerry O'Connell. Being a voice actor, he has also voiced other parts of "Star Trek: Lower Decks": a Medical Ethics nurse #2 in episode "I, Excretus", a Ferengi named Pog in episode "Parth Ferengi's Heart Place", two different Targalan robots in "Shades of Green", a Klingon biker in "A Farewell To Farms", Clem in episode "Starbase 80?!", Spheronius in episode "Of Gods and Angles", a Dilmerian villager in episode "Fully Dilated", and a Clicket infiltrator in episode "Upper Decks".

He has two other "Star Trek" connections: his wife, Rebecca Romijn, plays Una Chin-Riley (a continuation of Number One from the original "Star Trek" pilot) on "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds"; he starred in the movie "Stand By Me" with Wil Wheaton, who went on to play Wesley Crusher in "Star Trek: The Next Generation".
11. Doctor on Deep Space 9

Answer: Julian Bashir

Dr. Julian Bashir was a young doctor whose first assignment was to Deep Space 9. He exclaimed upon arriving, "I had my choice of any job in the fleet. [...] I didn't want some cushy job or a research grant. I wanted this. The farthest reaches of the galaxy. One of the most remote outposts available. This is where the adventure is. This is where heroes are made. Right here... in the wilderness." Of course, this insulted Kira Nerys, because what Julian was calling the wilderness was her home.

It was later uncovered that Julian was genetically altered because of his slow development as a child. Just before his seventh birthday, his family went to Adigeon Prime, where he underwent treatments that improved his IQ, coordination, reflexes, vision, stamina, height, and weight. He didn't realize this is what had been done to him until he was a teen. He also learned that he had to keep his enhancements a secret, since the Eugenics Wars had soured Earth's and the Federation's feelings about genetic engineering.

Dr. Bashir is played by Alexander Siddig. His other "Star Trek" connection is that his uncle is Malcolm McDowell, who played Dr. Tolian Soran, the villain of the movie "Star Trek: Generations".
12. Jean-Luc Picard's best friend

Answer: Jack Crusher

Jack was Jean-Luc's best friend and an officer under his command on the USS Stargazer. He was sadly killed on an away mission. It was a decision made by Picard that ended up getting Crusher killed. It was this fact that included a life-or-death challenge to Jack's son Wesley when he was first applying to Starfleet Academy.

Jack had made a holo-recording addressing his son. He made it when Wesley was a baby, and was going to keep making a series of them, presenting them to Wesley when he turned 18. However, he only recorded one before his death when Wesley was still a toddler.

Jack Crusher was portrayed by Doug Wert.
13. Andorian Officer on USS Cerritos

Answer: Jennifer Sh'reyan

Jennifer Sh'reyan (oddly, an Andorian with a Human first name) was initially a minor foil of Beckett Mariner, complaining about noise in their off-shift, or opining about Beckett's workout routine on the holodeck. But during a crisis in the Lapeerian star system, Jennifer rescued Beckett from floating into space because the outer hull of the ship had been removed. After this, they became girlfriends, but broke up when Mariner was wrongly accused of sabotaging the ship's reputation when she was in fact promoting it.

Jennifer Sh'reyan is voiced by Lauren Lapkus. Lapkus also voiced the Jennifer-werewolf on Jengus IV (episode "Mining the Mind's Mines") and an Alien Server (episode "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel").
14. Aspiring journalist and author

Answer: Jake Sisko

Jake and his father, Commander (later Captain) Benjamin Sisko moved to Deep Space 9 when the Cardassians left Bajor and abandoned their ore processing space station, Terok Nor. He grew up there, befriending a Ferengi teen - Nog - and helping him to learn to read. Instead of following his father's footsteps and joining Starfleet, he became a journalist covering the events at Deep Space 9.

Jake was played by Cirroc Lofton throughout the series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and Tony Todd as an adult Jake in the episode "The Visitor". Tony Todd also appeared as Worf's younger brother Kurn in episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"; also as the Alpha-Hirogen in "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Prey".
15. Doctor on USS Enterprise; specializes in Vulcans.

Answer: Joseph M'Benga

Dr. M'Benga was portrayed by Booker Bradshaw ("Star Trek") and Babs Olusanmokun ("Star Trek: Strange New Worlds").
