Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Omnipotent child who tormented Kirk

Answer: Trelane

Trelane was a young Q entity (confirmed in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Wedding Bell Blues") who met the USS Enterprise (commanded by Captain Kirk) on its way to Beta VI colony. He kidnapped Sulu and Kirk, then invites a landing party to visit. Beaming down to a planet's surface, they find Sulu and Kirk in a state of suspended animation inside a castle-like building. Trelane then makes his appearance, purporting to be a retired general, with the title Squire of Gothos. ("Star Trek" episode "The Squire of Gothos")

Trelane was portrayed by William Campbell. Campbell also played the Klingon captain Koloth in the "Star Trek" episode "The Trouble With Tribbles" and the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Blood Oath".
2. Transporter clone abandoned for years

Answer: Thomas Riker

William Thomas "Tom" Riker was Will Riker up until an incident when he was a lieutenant aboard the USS Potemkin, rescuing scientists on Nervala IV. He was being beamed up from Nervala IV through atmospheric distortions. The transporter chief was having difficulties, so he used a second beam to get his pattern through. After materializing, he shut off the second beam. Instead of dissipating, the beam retained its integrity and rematerialized Riker on the planet as well. Not knowing that they'd created a transporter clone, the Potemkin left Nervala IV, abandoning the duplicate Riker.

He was discovered eight years later by the USS Enterprise-D, which had the other Riker aboard as first officer. The Riker clone had maintained the systems on Nervala IV, having to cannibalize some equipment to stay alive. This made the Enterprise's mission difficult, because the systems were not what was expected. So on a subsequent away mission, the two Rikers were beamed back down to get the remaining scientific data from the outpost's computers. The two Rikers were at odds, being the same person, but at different ranks. Also, the rescued Riker became a more cautious and duty-driven officer, while the clone Riker was more reckless and impulsive.

After the mission on Nervala IV, the clone Riker chose to leave the Enterprise. Picard got him a posting aboard the USS Gandhi. As he left, he chose to go by his middle name - Thomas. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Second Chances")

A few years later, Thomas became dismayed at the situation between the Federation and the Cardassian Union in the Demilitarized Zone. He resigned from Starfleet and joined the Maquis.
Thomas Riker then impersonated his "brother" William and went to Deep Space 9 to hijack the USS Defiant to use in the Maquis cause. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Defiant")

Thomas Riker was portrayed by Jonathan Frakes, the same actor who plays William Riker.
3. Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed

Answer: Lwaxana Troi

Lwaxana Troi, mother of Deanna Troi, is a Betazoid woman with exceptional mind-reading powers, as most full-blooded Betazoids have. She serves as a Federation ambassador, and often called upon the USS Enterprise-D (the ship her daughter served on) to transport her. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation")

Her various titles are: daughter of the Fifth House, holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed. She states these whenever she wants to assert herself to others. However, Deanna reminded her that the Sacred Chalice of Rixx is an old clay pot with mold growing in it. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Ménage à Troi")

She has had her share of tragedy in her life. Her eldest daughter, Kestra, died on a family picnic when she fell into a pond while Lwaxana and her human husband Ian Troi were distracted taking care of infant Deanna. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Dark Page"). Ian was a Starfleet officer who died in the line of duty.

Lwaxana Troi was played by actress Majel Barrett. Barrett also played Number One (Captain Pike's first officer) ("Star Trek" pilot "The Cage"), Nurse Christine Chapel ("Star Trek"), and provided the voice of Starfleet computers in various "Star Trek" productions.
4. Spock's bethothed

Answer: T'Pring

T'Pring was betrothed to Spock when the two of them were seven years old. This activates the Vulcans' mating urge, which stays dormant until typically a seven year cycle when they are adults. Spock was brought to Vulcan by Captain Kirk when this occurred, where he and T'Pring would be wed. However, she had observed that Spock had become a legend of sorts with the Vulcans, and she did not want to be the consort of a legend. So she challenged the marriage, and chose Kirk to fight Spock to the death. ("Star Trek" episode "Amok Time")

The Spock/T'Pring relationship was altered a bit for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds".

T'Pring was played by Arlene Martel ("Star Trek") and Gia Sandhu ("Star Trek: Strange New Worlds").
5. USS Voyager's security officer

Answer: Tuvok

Tuvok was Captain Janeway's friend and personal security officer. She had assigned him to infiltrate the Maquis during their conflict with the Cardassian Union. She lost contact with him when the Maquis ship he was on -- the Val Jean -- was seized by The Caretaker and brought to the Delta Quadrant. Her search for that ship led to USS Voyager also being taken to the Delta Quadrant, leading to their seven-year voyage to get back to the Alpha Quadrant. ("Star Trek: Voyager")

Tuvok was played by Tim Russ.
6. Husband to B'Elanna Torres

Answer: Tom Paris

Thomas Eugene "Tom" Paris was an admiral's son, so a lot of expectation was thrust upon him. After graduating from Starfleet Academy, he was assigned to the USS Exeter. While on the Exeter, an incident involving his own pilot error resulted in the death of three fellow officers. He tried to cover this up, and when he finally confessed he was discharged from Starfleet. He then joined the Maquis, but was captured, convicted of treason, and sent to a penal colony in New Zealand on Earth.

He was recruited by Captain Janeway to help her find her security officer, Tuvok, who was working undercover in the Maquis. It was during this hunt that USS Voyager was seized by The Caretaker and brought to the Delta Quadrant. Because of the deaths that occurred, Janeway reinstated Paris as a lieutenant j.g. to take over as the main shift helmsman for their potentially 70-year trip back to Federation space.

While on Voyager, he had a few romantic pursuits. But the one that persisted was his relationship with B'Elanna Torres, the former Maquis who became the chief engineer. They eventually married and were expecting their first child, a daughter, when Admiral Janeway (from 25 years in the future) met Voyager and showed them the location of a Borg transwarp hub that could bring them to the Alpha Quadrant near-instantly. They went through, and as he was piloting, B'Elanna gave birth to their daughter, Miral, just as they arrived in the Alpha Quadrant. ("Star Trek: Voyager")

Tom Paris was portrayed by Robert Duncan McNeill. McNeill also played Nicholas Locarno ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The First Duty", "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episodes "The Inner Fight", and "Old Friends, New Planets"). Locarno was going to be the character that McNeill plays on "Star Trek: Voyager". But because of copyright rules, they would have to pay the writers of "The First Duty" royalties every time Locarno appeared. So instead, they created a new character with a different biography that also got him discharged from Starfleet.
7. Vulcan diplomat, judge, and philosopher

Answer: T'Pau

In the 22nd century, T'Pau was one of the leaders of the Syrrannite movement on Vulcan, which was credited with revealing the true teachings of Surak. After being framed (and cleared) for a terrorist bombing of the Earth embassy on Vulcan, she became a high-ranking minister of a new Vulcan government. ("Star Trek: Enterprise" episodes "Awakening" and "Kir'Shara")

In the 23rd century, T'Pau was the priestess who officiated Spock's wedding to T'Pring. She initially objected to Spock bringing humans to the Vulcan ceremony, but Spock proclaimed the right to have his friends by his side. ("Star Trek" episode "Amok Time")

T'Pau was portrayed by Celia Lovsky ("Star Trek") and Kara Zediker ("Star Trek: Enterprise").
8. USS Voyager's chief engineer

Answer: B'Elanna Torres

B'Elanna Torres was a Starfleet dropout, after having discipline issues throughout her two years there. After quitting, she eventually joined the Maquis after Chakotay saved her life. She was aboard the Val Jean when it was seized by The Caretaker and taken to the Delta Quadrant. She was deemed a possible mate for The Caretaker, who had infected her and Harry Kim with a deadly pathogen and sent to Ocampa for care. Fortunately, they escaped and were cured by the EMH on Voyager. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episodes "Caretaker" parts 1 and 2)

After the Val Jean's Maquis crew joined Voyager's Starfleet crew, she was assigned to Engineering. She got into an argument with the temporary chief Carey and broke his nose. This presented an obstacle, because Commander Chakotay had recommended her to be chief engineer, to replace Voyager's original engineer who had been killed in The Caretaker's seizing of Voyager. Needless to say, Captain Janeway was ambivalent about giving her this position. However, Voyager was soon trapped in a quantum singularity, and Torres's skills proved herself to Janeway and she was given the post.

B'Elanna Torres was portrayed by Roxann Dawson throughout "Star Trek: Voyager" and young B'Elanna by Jessica Gaona in "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Lineage".
9. USS Enterprise (NX-01) chief engineer

Answer: Trip Tucker

Charles "Trip" Tucker III was the chief engineer aboard the USS Enterprise (NX-01).

Trip Tucker was portrayed by Connor Trinneer.
10. USS Cerritos junior science officer

Answer: T'Lyn

T'Lyn was a junior officer on the Vulcan cruiser VCF Sh'vhal. In comparison to the other Vulcans on the Sh'vhal, she was radical in her use of intuition and in performing duties beyond what she was assigned. One of her experiments on sensors indicated metreon particles above natural levels coming from an off-course star system. Despite his disapproval of her methods, Captain Sokel diverted the Sh'vhal to investigate. Once there, they saw a Pakled and Klingon ship attacking the USS Cerritos. They intervened between the ships. But their shields couldn't withstand the Pakled attack for long. T'Lyn then presented another of her experimental designs that would increase shield power. Even though it was untested, it increased the shield power to 120%, driving off a Klingon ship and the Pakleds. Even though her projects saved the Cerritos, Sokal believed her attitude of using hunches and side projects was not conducive to serving on a Vulcan ship. Therefore, he transferred her to Starfleet. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "wej Duj")

T'Lyn eventually was assigned to be a junior officer aboard the Cerritos. Ensign D'Vana Tendi befriended her immediately, much to T'Lyn's discomfort. Through her adventures on the Cerritos, T'Lyn changed her mind on trying to return to Vulcan ships, and remained on the Cerritos.

T'Lyn was voiced by Gabrielle Ruiz.
11. USS Discovery junior officer

Answer: Sylvia Tilly

Sylvia Tilly was a cadet who was assigned to the USS Discovery in the mid-23rd century. She was aboard when the Federation-Klingon war ignited. In recognition for her role in ending the conflict, she was awarded the Starfleet Medal of Honor and an ensign's commission. ("Star Trek: Discovery" episode "Will You Take My Hand?")

Ensign Tilly was part of the Discovery crew when they chose to time-travel to the far future so that information on their computers could never be accessed by Section 31's artificial intelligence threat assessment system. ("Star Trek: Discovery" episode "Such Sweet Sorrow" part 2)

Sylvia Tilly was portrayed by Mary Wiseman.
12. Kestra's older brother

Answer: Thad Troi-Riker

Thaddeus "Thad" Troi-Riker was the son of William Riker and Deanna Troi. He was their firstborn, born on the USS Titan. He developed a condition called mendaxic neurosclerosis, so the Troi-Rikers retired and moved to the planet Nepenthe, which had supposed regenerative properties. Once there, Riker and Troi had a daughter, Kestra (named after Deanna's older sister who died when she was an infant ["Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Dark Page"]). The siblings loved each other very much, and they developed make-believe languages that they taught to their parents.

Sadly, Thad passed away from his condition. It could've been cured by the use of a positronic matrix, but they had been outlawed in the Federation because of a massacre carried out by artificial life forms on Mars years before, before it was known that they'd been hijacked to carry out the massacre. ("Star Trek: Picard")

Thad was not portrayed in any live-action productions. However, an unknown baby was used for pictures of Deanna and Jean-Luc holding an infant Thad. The character was probably named after William Riker's ancestor from the Civil War, Colonel Thaddius Riker (shown in the picture played by Lewis R. Stegman).
13. Hybrid individual create by transporter accident

Answer: Tuvix

Tuvix was created by a transporter accident when Tuvok, Neelix, and an alien orchid were beamed up to Voyager together. The flower had lysosomal enzymes, which, when in the transporter buffer, combined all DNA in the matter streams into a single organism. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Tuvix")

Tuvix was portrayed by Tom Wright. Write was considered for the role of Benjamin Sisko in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", and played Ghrath in the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Storm Front".

Both Ethan Phillips and Tim Russ were considered to play Tuvix. But it was finally decided to go with Wright, who artfully combined both characters' personalities in his audition.
14. USS Enterprise's third captain

Answer: James Tiberius Kirk

Captain James Tiberius Kirk was the thrid captain of the Federation starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). He succeeded Captain Christopher Pike ("Star Trek" episodes "The Menagerie" parts 1 and 2) and Captain Robert April ("Star Trek" [animated] episode "The Counter-clock Incident").

Kirk's middle name was noted with an initial "R" in "Star Trek" episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before" by Gary Mitchell when he threatened Kirk by making an open grave with a headstone that read "James R. Kirk". However, in subsequent productions, it has been an initial "T". Then, in the "Star Trek" (animated) episode "Bem", Kirk states his full name as "James Tiberius Kirk".

Kirk was portrayed initially by William Shatner. He has also been portrayed by Chris Pine, Joy Dever, and Jimmy Bennett (movie "Star Trek"), and Paul Wesley ("Star Trek: Strange New Worlds").
15. Klingon messiah

Answer: T'Kuvma

T'Kuvma was a 23rd-century Klingon warrior, leader of his house, and a follower of the ancient teachings of Kahless. A staunch traditionalist and Klingon nationalist, he was deeply suspicious of the expanding United Federation of Planets, which he regarded as a threat to Klingon culture and identity. He believed in unifying the feuding Klingon Great Houses against the Federation. ("Star Trek: Discovery" episode "The Vulcan Hello")

T'Kuvma was played by Chris Obi.
