Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Changeling who served as security chief on Deep Space 9

Answer: Odo

Odo was a Changeling from the Gamma Quadrant species known as the Founders. They had sent 100 baby Changelings out among the stars, so that they could explore and eventually return to their home planet to share their experiences in The Great Link. Odo and another Changeling named Laas somehow encountered the Bajoran/Gamma Quadrant wormhole and ended up in the Alpha Quadrant. Neither of them remembered this, as they were not yet fully sentient. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Chimera")

Odo was portrayed by René Auberjonois. Auberjonois has appeared in several "Star Trek" productions. Besides Odo, he has portrayed Colonel West (movie "ST VI: The Undiscovered Country"), Curzon Dax ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Facets"), Douglas Pabst ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Far Beyond the Stars"), Ezral ("Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Oasis"), and as a hologram of Odo ("Star Trek: Prodigy" episode "Kobayashi"). For this last role, his voice was sampled from several episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", as Auberjonois had passed away two years prior to the episode airing.
2. Navigator on USS Enterprise under Captain Pike

Answer: Erica Ortegas

Lieutenant Erica Ortegas was an operations officer on the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Pike, serving as the senior helmsman. During the Federation-Klingon War, she served with distinction on the front lines. When Ensign Boimler from the future met her, he called her a war hero. ("Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Those Old Scientists")

Erica Ortegas was portrayed by Melissa Navia.
3. Roguish freighter captain/pilot & part-time DJ

Answer: Thadiun Okona

Thadiun Okona was the captain and sole crew of his freighter, the Erstwhile. He operated in the Omega Sagitta system, shuttling between twin planets there: Atlec and Straleb. He became friends with both the ruling families. He also became the go-between of two of the youth of those families - Benzan and Yanar, facilitating them in romantic trysts and ferrying messages. When it became obvious that Yanar was pregnant, Secretary Debin accused Okona of being the father. At the same time, Secretary Kushell of Straleb accused Okona of stealing the Jewel of Thesia. It was finally revealed that Benzan was proposing the Yanar by giving her the Jewel of Thesia. ("Star Trek: TNG" episode "The Outrageous Okona")

Years later, he was hired to be the DJ at the afterparty of the Command Conference held on Starbase 25. This infuriated Captain Freeman, who was not allowed entrance to the party, because Okona was not even in Starfleet. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "An Embarrassment of Dooplers")

Thadiun Okona was portrayed by Billy Campbell.
4. School teacher on Deep Space 9

Answer: Keiko O'Brien

Keiko O'Brien was the wife of Chief Miles O'Brien. They were married and started a family on the USS Enterprise-D. They moved to Deep Space 9 after the Bajor regained its independence.

She noticed that the children of the personnel stationed there were rather unsupervised, so with Commander Sisko's permission, she opened a school for the youth who were living on the station. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "A Man Alone")

She ran into opposition when she refused to teach religion to the Bajoran children, instead referring to the Prophets as "wormhole aliens". A Bajoran terrorist, spurred on by Kai Winn's public statements, bombed the school. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "In the Hands of the Prophets")

Keiko O'Brien was portrayed by Rosalind Chao. Chao is known for portraying Soon-Lee, wife of Sergeant Max Klinger on "M*A*S*H" and "AfterMASH". She also played Rose in the movie "The Joy Luck Club".
5. Nurse aboard USS Enterprise-D under Dr. Crusher

Answer: Alyssa Ogawa

Alyssa Ogawa was a nurse in the sick bay of the USS Enterprise-D. She was mainly a background character. But then in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Lower Decks", she and three other ensigns' lives on the Enterprise-D were the focus of the episode. (The title of this episode was the basis of the animated show title "Star Trek: Lower Decks".)

Ogawa was once portrayed as the chief medical officer in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Parallels". Worf had been traveling among different quantum realities. In one of these, Ogawa was a doctor, not a nurse.

Nurse Ogawa was portrayed by Patti Yasutake. She appeared on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" sixteen times, and in "Star Trek" movies twice.
6. Former Kai of Bajor, trapped on a Gamma Quadrant moon

Answer: Opaka

Kai Opaka was the spiritual leader of Bajor in the latter days of the Cardassian Occupation and the early days of Bajor's independence from Cardassian rule. She was one of the most respected figures in the Bajoran culture.

On a tour of Deep Space Nine, Sisko noted her interest in the wormhole, and offered to take her through. They take the Yangtzee Kiang runabout through, with Kira and Bashir along for the ride. In the Gamma Quadrant, they receive a signal from a planet, so they go to investigate. Once there, they are attacked and they crash onto the planet. Opaka is killed in the crash.

They are met by a group of aliens named the Ennis, who are at war with another population on the planet, the Nol-Ennis. It turns out the two groups are on a penal colony because they couldn't come to a peaceful resolution of their war. While in the Ennis's cave, Kai Opaka appears.

It turns out that besides being trapped on the planet, the Ennis and Nol-Ennis are kept immortal by artificial biomechanical devices - nanites - in their bodies. These devices have infected Opaka as well, reanimating her. Bashir determines that none of the original prisoners nor Opaka can leave the planet, as the nanites will only work on the planet.

Opaka had sensed that she would not be returning, and accepts her fate. She believes her fate is to help the Ennis and Nol-Ennis begin their healing process. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

Kai Opaka was portrayed by Camille Saviola.
7. First officer of USS Enterprise under Captain Pike

Answer: Number One

Number One (as she was called) was the first officer to Captain Pike on the USS Enterprise. ("ST" pilot episode "The Cage", "ST" episode "The Menagerie") When Captain Pike was kidnapped by the Talosians, she ordered the ship's power to be channeled into a laser to blast into the Talosian complex. This fails, but Dr. Boyce opines that the Talosians mental illusions are probably preventing them from seeing the true damage.

Number One was portrayed by Majel Barrett (credited as M. Leigh Hudec) in the "ST" pilot. In the spin-off series "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds", she is portrayed by Rebecca Romijn.
8. Romulan spy who instigated the synthetics' attack on Mars

Answer: Oh

Starfleet Commodore Oh was actually a Romulan spy name Nadar, a General in the Tal Shiar. As a double agent, she rose to the position of director of Starfleet Security throughout the 2390s.

In 2385, she orchestrated an attack on Mars by synthetic beings (androids). This causes a great distrust in such beings, causing any research on building them to be outlawed. ("Star Trek: Picard")

Commodore Oh was portrayed by Tamlyn Tomita.
9. Female leader of the Emerald Chain

Answer: Osyraa

Osyraa was the leader of the Emerald Chain in the late 32nd century. ("Star Trek: Discovery")

Osyraa was portrayed by Janet Kidder.
10. Symbinont who fell in love with Beverly Crusher

Answer: Odan

Odan was initially introduced as a Trill Federation ambassador, the son of a previous ambassador who had negotiated peace among the Pelians decades before. While working on the USS Enterprise-D, he met and fell in love with Dr. Beverly Crusher, and she with him. But when his shuttle is attacked and he his injured, it comes to light that Odan is actually a symbiotic being - a symbiont - that uses humanoid Trill to interact with other humanoids. Odan was actually the ambassador's father who had met with the Pelians years ago. With Odan's host body dying and a replacement host hours away, Commander Riker volunteered to host Odan until the new host arrived. This created two complications: the Pelians were reluctant to deal with William Odan, and Odan was still in love with Beverly.

Odan finished the negotiations while in Riker's body, but it was very taxing. Riker's body was rejecting having the symbiont implanted, but Odan rejected using further immunosuppressants because they would damage Riker.

The new host finally arrived, but to Beverly's disappointment, the new host - Kareel - was female. Beverly ended their relationship, as it was too complicated for her to be involved with a being who could swap bodies so easily. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Host")

Odan's first host was portrayed by Franc Luz. Jonathan Frakes portrayed William Odan. Kareel Odan was portrayed by Nicole Orth-Pallavicini.
11. Former Borg Drone who was assimilated as a child

Answer: Seven of Nine

Seven of Nine was a human child named Annika Hansen. She was traveling with her parents, who were on an independent research mission to study the Borg. They eventually found a Borg cube and followed it through a transwarp conduit into the Delta Quadrant. They had developed a means to cloak themselves from notice by the Borg, allowing them to beam in and out of Borg ships to do their research.

However, they ran into a subspace particle storm that damaged their special shielding. The Borg saw them and determined that they were a threat. The family was then assimilated. Annika was placed in a maturation chamber for five years, with the mental anguish of being assimilated replaced with order.

When USS Voyager discovered the Borg were at war with a transdimensional species (only referred to as Species 8472), they teamed up with the Borg in developing a weapon to use against them. To aid in this, Seven was assigned to interact with Voyager. After an attack by 8472, the Borg cube that Voyager was traveling with was destroyed. Seven beamed Janeway, herself, and a few Borg to Voyager to escape and keep developing the weapon.

Captain Janeway soon discovered that the Borg were the initial aggressors in their war with Species 8472. She enacted a contingency plan to sever Seven from the collective. With her being disconnected, her human physiology started to re-activate. She spent the next three years on Voyager as they headed back to Earth. ("Star Trek: Voyager")

In later years, she worked with the Fenris Rangers, a peacekeeping force that worked near the Romulan Neutral Zone. She worked with a woman, Bjayzl, who betrayed her. She was actually a dealer in black market Borg machinery. She learned of the other Borg that had returned with Voyager, Icheb. He was a lieutenant on the USS Coleman. Bjayzl lured Lieutenant Icheb into a trap, where he was strapped down and his remaining Born implants were forcibly removed. Seven came to rescue him, but she was too late. Icheb was in unbearable pain, and he begged Seven to kill him. Crying and cradling him, she shot him with her phaser. ("Star Trek: Picard")

Seven of Nine was portrayed by Jeri Ryan from the third season finale through seasons four through seven of "Star Trek: Voyager" and in "Star Trek: Picard".
12. Commander of the Pathfinder Project

Answer: Owen Paris

Admiral Owen Paris was a Starfleet admiral who was in command of the Pathfinder Project, which developed major advances in communication that allowed communication with USS Voyager when it was still thousands of light-years away from Federation space. He was also Tom Paris's father.

He was the captain of the Al-Batani, under which Kathryn Janeway served as his science officer. ("Star Trek: Voyager")

Owen Paris was portrayed by Warren Munson in the second and fifth seasons of "Star Trek: Voyager". He also portrayed Admiral Marcus Holt in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Interface".

Owen Paris was portrayed by Richard Herd in the sixth and seventh seasons of "Star Trek: Voyager". He also portrayed the Klingon L'Kor in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" two-part episode "Birthright".
