Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Matron of a 1930's soup kitchen

Answer: Edith Keeler

Edith Keeler was a social worker and matron of a soup kitchen in the 21st Street Mission in New York City during the Great Depression. She dreamed of bringing peace to all of Earth, and believed that mankind would someday explore outer space. She sadly died in 1930, the victim of a traffic accident.

When a drugged Dr. McCoy accidentally used the Guardian of Forever, he was sent back to just before she was killed. He walked into Keeler's mission, and she nursed him back to health. Though undocumented, he somehow saved her from her untimely death. When this happened, Keeler continued her social crusade for world peace. This movement grew to such a size that it delayed the United States from entering World War II. This then allowed Germany to finish its heavy water experiments, and they developed nuclear weapons before the US. This drastically changed the nature of life on Earth.

When McCoy used the Guardian of Forever, the landing party that was looking for him suddenly found that the Enterprise was no longer in orbit. The Federation no longer existed, and the landing party was stranded. Kirk and Spock then asked the Guardian to send them back to stop McCoy from whatever he did to change time. It could only send them to a general time period, but they went anyway.

They actually arrived before McCoy did, and unintentionally established contact with Edith Keeler. They worked for her in her soup kitchen, using their wages to build a crude device that could read Spock's recording of the Guardian's presentation of Earth history. He discovered that Edith's peace mongering caused Germany to win World War II. He rightly surmised that she had to die.

While Kirk was on a date with Edith, she casually mentioned Dr. McCoy. Kirk ran back to the mission and told Spock that McCoy was in the mission. Just then, McCoy came out, and the friends embraced. Edith was curious at their reunion, and she began to cross the street to join them. Just then, a truck came careening down the street. McCoy saw that she was about to be hit, and was about to save her. But Kirk held him back, and she was killed as was destined. ("Star Trek" episode "The City on the Edge of Forever")

Edith Keeler was portrayed by Joan Collins. Collins is most remembered as Alexis Morell Carrington Colby on the nighttime soap opera "Dynasty".
2. A simple tailor on Deep Space 9

Answer: Elim Garak

Elim Garak was an expatriate of Cardassia after the Cardassians left their occupation of Bajor. He purportedly was just a tailor who owned a shop on the Promenade of Terok Nor, renamed Deep Space Nine after the Federation and Bajor took over ownership of the station. He continued to use his contacts on Cardassia to aid various people who needed his help. He even went so far as to set a bomb on Romulan Senator Vreenak's vessel (killing the senator) in order to cement Captain Sisko's attempt to deceive the Romulans into believing that the Dominion was about to start a war front with their empire. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "In the Pale Moonlight")

An alternate reality version of Garak appeared in "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Fissure Quest". In this reality, he was a Starfleet doctor serving on the USS Anaximander under Section 31 Captain William Boimler. They were pursuing a ship that was tearing fissures in-between the fabric of different realities. He was also married to an EMH based on Dr. Julian Bashir.

Andrew Robinson portrayed Elim Garak in his 33 appearances on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and voiced him on "Star Trek: Lower Decks". Besides acting, he is also an author and director.
3. Navigator on USS Enterprise under Captain Pike

Answer: Erica Ortegas

Lieutenant Erica Ortegas was an operations officer on the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Pike, serving as the senior helmsman. During the Federation-Klingon War, she served with distinction on the front lines. When Ensign Boimler from the future met her, he called her a war hero. ("Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Those Old Scientists")

Erica Ortegas was portrayed by Melissa Navia.
4. Starfleet expert on the Borg

Answer: Elizabeth Shelby

Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Shelby was an ambitious officer. She was in charge of tactical analysis and defensive planning for a potential invasion by the Borg. She and Admiral Hanson rendezvoused with the USS Enterprise-D after it found the colony on Jouret IV had been destroyed, literally scooped out of the planet. Her analysis showed that it was the Borg.

She stayed aboard the Enterprise-D to help it prepare for a Borg attack. When they did, they kidnapped Captain Picard, turning him into a Borg with the name Locutus. The Borg then headed for Earth, with knowledge gained from assimilating Picard. Riker took command as captain, and he promoted Shelby to be his first officer, noting that other crewmates could've served, but he needed them where he knew their capabilities were at their best. On their way to catch up to the Borg cube, they saw the remnants

The Enterprise-D caught up to the cube that held Locutus and took him back. They connected Locutus to Data and reached Picard's consciousness. Picard said the sole word - "sleep" - which suggested to Data that he could force the Borg drones into their recharge cycle early. Having the whole cube of Borg recharging at once, this caused a feedback loop and the cube exploded above Earth.

Shelby returned to Starfleet Command to help rebuild what the Borg had destroyed on their way to Earth. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" two-part episode "The Best of Both Worlds")

By 2381, Shelby was a captain in command of a capital ship. As such, she and her first officer were invited and attended a command conference on Starbase 25, as well as the after-party. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "An Embarrassment Of Dooplers")

In 2401, Shelby was a fleet admiral. She was leading the opening celebrations for the 250th anniversary of Frontier Day, commemorating the USS Enterprise's (NX-01) maiden voyage. ("Star Trek: Picard" episode "Vōx")
5. Starfleet security chief on Deep Space 9; defected to the Maquis

Answer: Michael Eddington

Lieutenant Commander Michael Eddington was a Starfleet security officer assigned to Deep Space 9 after contact with the Dominion. He was initially seen as a safeguard because Starfleet did not have complete trust in Odo. Through several incidents, Eddington proved himself to be a trustworthy security officer.

However, the truth was that Eddington became sympathetic to the Maquis cause. He eventually was discovered and escaped to join their forces full-time. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

Michael Eddington was portrayed by Kenneth Marshall. He was in a total of nine episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".
6. Officious captain that subbed for Captain Picard

Answer: Edward Jellico

Captain Edward Jellico was the stern and authoritarian officer who temporarily took command of the USS Enterprise-D when Captain Picard, Dr. Crusher, and Lieutenant Worf were assigned an undercover mission on Celtris III. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" two-part episode "Chain of Command")

Jellico eventually became an admiral. When Vice Admiral Janeway sought permission to enter Romulan space to retrieve the USS Protostar, he denied it, stating that the Federation was working towards peace with the Romulans. ("Star Trek: Prodigy" episode "Masquerade")

Edward Jellico was portrayed/voiced by Ronny Cox. He is known for playing Beverly Hills policeman Andrew Bogomil in the "Beverly Hills Cop" movies and as Dick Jones in the movie "Robocop".
7. Ninth host of Dax simbiont

Answer: Ezri

Ezri Tegan became the host of the Dax symbiont after the murder of Jadzia Dax. She, however, remembered that Dax had been hosted by Joran Dax (né Belar), a musician who became a serial killer. Ezri was played by Nicole de Boer.
8. First minister of Bajor

Answer: Shakaar Edon

Shakaar Edon was a member of the Bajoran Resistance and leader of the eponymous Shakaar cell during the Cardassian Occupation. After twenty-five years of fighting the Cardassian occupiers, the Occupation ended, and he became a farmer. Later, he became first minister of Bajor. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

Shakaar Edon was portrayed by Duncan Regehr.
9. Leader of the Cardassian Obsidian Order

Answer: Enabran Tain

Enabran Tain was a Cardassian of the Cardassian Union in the 24th century. He was the officious commander of the Obsidian Order, of which he maintained tight control. He was the father of Elim Garak - a fact he never admitted publicly. ("Star Trek: DS9")

Enabran Tain was portrayed by Emmy-nominated actor Paul Dooley.
10. First fully-Romulan cadet admitted to Starfleet Academy

Answer: Elnor

After the lifting of the ban on synthetics, Elnor joined Starfleet Academy as the first fully Romulan cadet. ("Star Trek: Picard")
