Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Orphan who was given extraordinary mental powers

Answer: Charlie Evans

Charles "Charlie" Evans was a 3-year-old orphan who had been the sole survivor of a transport ship that crashed on the planet Thasus. The native Thasians (non-corporeal beings with vast telekinetic and other mental powers) gave Charlie powers like theirs in order to survive.

He was discovered 14 years later by the SS Antares. Once there, he used his mental powers to coerce the crew to deliver him to the USS Enterprise, which could take him to Colony 5, where his only known relatives lived.

On board the Enterprise, he was thrust into being social with others for the first time since he was a toddler. He bonded with Captain Kirk as a father figure. However, he was inappropriate with others, especially with females. He developed a crush on Yeoman Janice Rand, which was not reciprocated. He also remotely caused the Antares to explode, so that his true nature would not be revealed.

He started to lash out at the Enterprise crew with his powers, making some people vanish, turning one young woman into a lizard, and removing the face of another woman. This came to a head when he was overtly spurned by Rand, and he made her disappear.

The Thasians discovered that Charlie had been removed from their planet. A Thasian ship approached, and a Thasian appeared on the bridge of the Enterprise to take Charlie back. They undid all his attacks on the Enterprise crew, including returning Rand and others who were "disappeared", though they couldn't restore the Antares ship and crew. Charlie pleaded with the bridge crew not to be taken back because the Thasians were unemotional and he couldn't touch them. The Thasians countered that he couldn't stay with the humans, as his powers couldn't be taken away, and he would be a continued threat to anyone he met. As the Thasians transported him away, the final image of Charlie faded, with his final words echoing, "I wanna stay... stay... stay... stay..." ("Star Trek" episode "Charlie X")

Charlie Evans was portrayed by Robert Walker. He was in his mid-20s when he played the 17-year-old Charlie.
2. Nurse aboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)

Answer: Christine Chapel

Nurse (later Commander) Christine Chapel was assigned to the sick bay of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), both under Captain Pike and Captain Kirk. She later became a doctor and was re-assigned to the Enterprise after its refit in the 2270s.

Christine Chapel was portrayed by Jess Bush in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and by Majel Barrett in "Star Trek" and its following movies. Barrett had many ties to "Star Trek": her husband was "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, she was Number One in the first "Star Trek" pilot episode "The Cage", she voiced the computer in several "Star Trek" productions, and she portrayed Lwaxana Troi in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".
3. Second captain of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)

Answer: Christopher Pike

Captain Christopher Pike was the second captain of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), after Robert April and before James Kirk. After leaving starship command, he was on an inspection tour of a cadet ship when a baffle plate ruptured. Delta radiation was released, and Pike rushed to rescue all the surviving cadets. Unfortunately, he was caught behind a lockdown shield, suffering horrendous radiation damage that confined him to a wheelchair that he could operate slightly and answer yes/no questions with a light on the chair's console. Upon learning this, his former science officer, Spock, contacted the Talosians, a race that had once kidnapped Pike, to see if they would take him in and let him live out his life as a fully capable human, and not an invalid. They agreed, and Spock plotted a scheme to take Pike to Talos IV via a commandeered Enterprise and to stage a court-martial that would distract Kirk from regaining control of his ship. ("Star Trek" episode "The Menagerie", parts I and II)

Pike was portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter in the originally unaired pilot "The Cage", the footage of which was integrated into "The Menagerie's" plot.

For the scenes with a disabled Pike in "The Menagerie", actor Sean Kenney portrayed Pike. Kenney also played Lieutenant DePaul in "Star Trek" episodes "Arena" and "A Taste of Armageddon".

In the prequel series "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds", Pike is portrayed by Anson Mount.
4. Doctor aboard the USS Discovery

Answer: Hugh Culber

Commander Hugh Culber was a Starfleet officer who lived during both the mid-23rd and late 32nd centuries. He served as a physician and counselor aboard the USS Discovery. ("Star Trek: Discovery" episode "Choose Your Pain")

Hugh Culber was portrayed by Wilson Cruz.
5. Engineer aboard the USS Voyager

Answer: Joe Carey

Lt. Joe Carey was the senior Starfleet engineering officer on USS Voyager after it was whisked away to the Delta Quadrant. (I'm unsure if there was a more senior officer who was killed by the Caretaker's seizing of the ship.) He came to blows with B'Elanna Torres over a conflict in Engineering. He was next in line to be named chief engineer, but Chakotay convinced Janeway to give the position to B'Elanna.

Carey appeared four times in the first season of "Star Trek: Voyager", then once each season for seasons 5, 6, and 7. His appearances in seasons 5 and 6 were in time-travel scenes from the past.

In his last appearance, in episode "Friendship One", he was being held hostage on a planet that had been found by an Earth probe - Friendship 1 - from the 21st century. The probe was designed to share information on warp drive and antimatter power. The planet used this technology poorly, and the planet was decimated by a nuclear-style war, leaving the planet a barely habitable rock. Survivors, led by a man named Verin - realizing that Voyager represented the civilization that sent - took the Voyager away team hostage to try and negotiate with Voyager to move the remaining people to a new world. Supposedly as a sign of good faith, Verin allowed one of the away team, Carey, to beam back to Voyager, using transport enhancers. But just before Carey started to be beamed up, Verin shot him. Carey arrived on Voyager dead.

Carey was played by Josh Clark. Clark also appeared in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as a tactical officer in the episode "Justice".
6. Starfleet Academy cadet in the 32nd century

Answer: Caleb Mir

Caleb Mir was a Starfleet Academy cadet in the 32nd century. He was a special cadet to Captain Nahla Ake, as she had had to sentence his mother to a penal colony. Right after the sentencing, he managed to escape from Federation custody.

Caleb lived for 15 years on his own, developing skills to survive in the underbelly of galactic society. He was caught in the act of committing a crime and imprisoned on the planet Toroth. Ake negotiated with the Torothans to commute his sentence, and she had him enlist in Starfleet Academy, which she was then the new chancellor of.

Caleb Mir was mainly portrayed by Sandro Rosta. He was portrayed as a child in flashback scenes by Luciano Fernandez.
7. Son of Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher

Answer: Jack Crusher

Ensign Jack Crusher was a 25th century Starfleet officer assigned to the USS Enterprise-G. He was the son of Admirals Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher. He was named after Picard's late friend and Beverly's husband. ("Star Trek: Picard")

Jack Crusher was portrayed by Ed Speleers.
8. Navigator on the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)

Answer: Pavel Chekov

Ensign (later Commander) Pavel Chekov was one of the navigators aboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) under Captain Kirk. He was proud of his Russian heritage and brought it up whenever he could. ("Star Trek")

As a commander, he and Captain Clark Terrell were assigned to find a lifeless planet on which to test the Genesis Device developed by the Drs. Marcus. They thought they had found Ceti Alpha VI to be such a planet. But then they detected life, so they had to beam down and investigate. Once there, they found the remains of a 20th century ship, the Botony Bay. In horror, Chekov realized this was the ship of Khan Noonien Singh, the notorious augmented human that Captain Kirk had left on Ceti Alpha V. Rushing out of the ship to get beamed back up, they encountered the survivors of Khan and his fellow Augments. It turns out that Ceti Alpha VI had exploded years ago, and in the gravitational chaos this created the planets in the Ceti Alpha system rearranged, with Ceti Alpha V becoming the sixth planet. This devastated Ceti Alpha V, causing many of Khan's crew to perish. ("Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan")

When Kirk, Scott, and Chekov attended the maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise-B, the ship was called upon to perform a rescue of two ships carrying El-Aurian refugees that were caught in the Nexus. The ship was still missing key equipment, so some re-engineering was done to rescue the El-Aurians. Though they were mostly successful, one final energy ribbon from the Nexus caused a hull breach near where Kirk had made modifications. Kirk was believed to be killed. ("Star Trek Generations")

Pavel Chekov was portrayed by Walter Koenig. He had a recurring role as Psi Cop Alfred Bester in "Babylon 5".
9. Courier in the 32nd century

Answer: Cleveland Booker

Cleveland "Book" Booker V, born Tareckx, was a Kwejian who lived during the 32nd and 33rd centuries. As a Kwejian, he had the ability to connect empathically with plants and animals, causing a glowing orange pattern to appear on his forehead whenever he used this ability. Booker also owned a pet cat named Grudge. ("Star Trek: Discovery" episode "That Hope Is You, Part 1")

Book Booker was portrayed by David Ajala.
10. Human who developed warp drive

Answer: Zefram Cochrane

Zefram Cochrane developed warp drive in the mid-21st century. He initially flew the Phoenix, his missile-converted-to-warp-ship, alone. His flight caught the attention of a passing Vulcan ship, which came to Earth and initiated first contact with Cochrane and his crew. This meeting eventually led to the creation of the Federation.

But when the Borg traveled from the 24th century to the 21st, they attacked Cochrane's base in Montana to try and disrupt history. However, the USS Enterprise-E happened to follow the Borg through their time vortex and helped repair the Phoenix from the attack. This time, Riker and La Forge flew in the Phoenix with Cochrane to make sure the flight occurred and attracted the Vulcans, which it did. (movie "Star Trek: First Contact")

In his later years, he set out by himself to the stars, eventually crash-landing on Gamma Canaris N. There he was found by an energy being, referred to as The Companion, who healed Cochrane and also apparently de-aged him so that he appeared to be in his mid 30s.

One hundred and fifty years later, he was discovered by Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and a dying Commissioner Nancy Hedford, who also landed on Gamma Canaris N. The Companion had hypothesized that Cochrane was lonely for humans, so she caused their shuttle to land there. Though The Companion could communicate with Cochrane telepathically, he didn't realize that its gender was actually female and that it loved him. Through using a universal translator, they discovered this gender identity and The Companion's attraction to Cochrane. Cochrane rejected The Companion's attraction. But then, when Hedford became close to death, The Companion joined with her and healed her, but at the expense of her immortality. It was then that Cochrane grew to appreciate The Companion, and he and Companion/Hedford stayed on Gamma Canaris N to live out their lives. ("Star Trek" episode "Metamorphosis")

Zephram Cochrane was portrayed by Glenn Corbett ("Star Trek" episode "Metamorphosis") and James Cromwell (movie "Star Trek: First Contact" and "Star Trek: Enterprise" episodes "Broken Bow" and "In A Mirror, Darkly").

Corbett made many guest appearances on American television in the 1960s - 1980s. One of his notable roles was that of Linc Case in the last season of "Route 66", a soldier who had returned from the Vietnam War. This was one of the first acknowledgements of the Vietnam War on American TV.

Cromwell has a vast resume in both television and movies. He appeared three times as Stretch Cunningham in "All In The Family", though the character was referenced quite a bit more. He starred as Farmer Hoggett in the movie "Babe" and as Brother Mathias in "The Babe". In "Star Trek" productions, besides his appearances as Cochrane, he played Narok ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Hunted"), Jaglom Shrek ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Birthright", Parts I and II), Hanok ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Starship Down"), and as a Holographic Zephram Cochrane ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Grounded").
11. 20th century woman revived from cryostatis in the 24th century

Answer: Clare Raymond

Clare Raymond was a 20th century woman who died of an embolism when she was 35 years old. Her husband opted to have her cryogenically preserved and her body stored on a space module. Somehow, the satellite was swept away to the Kazis binary star system. It was found by the USS Enterprise-D in the 24th century. Dr. Crusher was able to revive Clare and two other preserved humans and cure them of whatever had killed them 400 years before. Clare returned to Earth to look up her descendants who still lived there. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Neutral Zone")

Clare Raymond was portrayed by Gracie Harrison.
12. Chief engineer on USS Enterprise (NX-01)

Answer: Charles Tucker III

Charles "Trip" Tucker III was the chief engineer aboard the USS Enterprise (NX-01). The name "Trip" came from him being the third person in his family with the name Charles Tucker.

Trip Tucker was portrayed by Connor Trinneer.
13. Captain of the Val Jean

Answer: Chakotay

Chakotay was a Human of Nicarao descent. He had been a Starfleet officer before deserting and joining the Maquis. On one of his Maquis missions in command of the ship Val Jean, he was chased into The Badlands, an area of large plasma storms on the Federation-Cardassian border. A being from across the Milky Way galaxy, The Caretaker, seized the Val Jean and brought it to the Delta Quadrant. Soon thereafter, the Caretaker also seized USS Voyager and brought it to his array in the Delta Quadrant.

The Caretaker was trying to find a biologically-compatible being to mate with so that their offspring could continue to defend and supply the planet Ocampa. When the crews were released, they were challenged by a warrior species, the Kazon. In one particular altercation, Chakotay sacrificed the Val Jean to destroy an attacking Kazon ship. He and his crew were transported to Voyager. Realizing that without the Caretaker to operate his array, the Ocampa would be at the mercy of the Kazon. Voyager's Captain, Janeway, ordered the array destroyed. This also left both crews stranded in the Delta Quadrant.

Since several crew members of both ships had perished when the Caretaker seized them and they only had one ship between the two crews, it was decided that both crews would join as one - a Starfleet crew - with Chakotay becoming a provisional commander and Janeway's first officer. They then began the long journey back to the Alpha Quadrant. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Caretaker")

Chakotay was portrayed by Robert Beltran.
14. Vendorian spy in Human form

Answer: Carter Winston

Carter Winston was a 23rd-century trader. He used his acquired wealth to aid Federation colonies in distress. He was engaged to a young Starfleet officer, Lt Anne Nored.

He went missing when a meteor storm disabled his ship and it crash-landed on the planet Vendor, where the natives are shape-shifters. They relegated his care to a low-ranking Vendorian. He cared for Winston for a year, until Winston passed away.

The Vendorian was not happy with his low position in his society, so he left Vendor and eventually became a spy for the Romulans. He shifted his form to that of Winston, then was planted in space, adrift near the Romulan Neutral Zone, in the real Carter Winston's ship. He was rescued by the USS Enterprise, coincidentally where Winston's fiancée was assigned.

Without realizing it, by taking Winston's form, the Vendorian also attained a love for Anne Nored. While on his mission to sabotage the Enterprise and deliver it to the Romulans, his love for Anne caused him to reverse some of his sabotage by taking on the form of the shield circuitry he'd previously damaged. He was arrested, but Kirk would give him a recommendation since he ultimately saved the Enterprise. ("Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "The Survivor")

Carter Winston was voiced by Ted Knight. Knight had done many voice-overs, usually as the narrator of cartoons such as "Fantastic Voyage" and "Super Friends". He also starred as Ted Baxter in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and Henry Rush in "Too Close For Comfort".
15. Co-inventor of the Genesis Device

Answer: Carol Marcus

Dr. Carol Marcus was a Federation scientist (astrophysicist) in the 23rd century. She had been a love interest of James Kirk's when he was a lieutenant. They conceived a son, David. However, Carol didn't want the complications of her and Kirk's two different worlds to make growing up difficult for David, so she asked Kirk to stay away.

David became a scientist like his mother, and joined her team for Project Genesis, which had the aim to completely restructure the matter on a dead celestial body into living matter. On their small-scale experiments, they were successful, creating an underground living environment inside a large asteroid. (movie "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan")

Dr. Carol Marcus was portrayed by Bibi Besch. Besch was the mother of actress Samantha Mathis.
