Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First Klingon Starfleet officer

Answer: Worf

Worf was a Klingon who, as a 5-year-old boy, was one of just two survivors of a Romulan attack on the Khitomer colony. He was found by CPO Sergey Rozhenko of the Federation starship USS Interpid, which was answering the colony's distress call. After the Klingon Empire mistakenly stated that Worf had no living relatives, Chief Rozhenko and his wife, Helena, took him in and raised him alongside their own son, Nikolai. The two boys considered themselves brothers. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Homeward")

Worf was fiercely proud of his Klingon heritage, which gave him a serious demeanor. But not being raised by Klingons, he extended that demeanor to a belief that Klingons didn't laugh or have fun. During a phaser shooting range exchange, Guinan informs Worf that she's heard Klingon Belly laughs that would "curl your hair". ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Redemption, Part I")

When it was discovered that the Khitomer Massacre was engineered by the father of Duras, the Klingon High Council decided to cover up the facts because Duras was a high-ranking influential individual. So it was decided to shift the blame to Mogh, Worf's father, since he was dead and Worf was not involved with Klingon society. However, this cover-up came to the attention of Kurn, Worf's long-lost brother. He was left with a family friend, Lorgh, when the rest of the family moved to Khitomer. Kurn sought out Worf by joining the Enterprise crew temporarily as part of the Officer Exchange Program. Once he determined that his older brother was honorable, he told them of the false accusation placed on their father. Worf went to Qo'noS to confront the council. But when it was revealed that the truth would throw the Klingon Empire into a civil war, Worf sacrificed his honor and accepted discommendation, then left Qo'noS. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Sins of the Father")

When Captain Sisko is having difficulties with dozens of Klingon ships that have requested shore leave on Deep Space 9, he notifies Starfleet Command. They dispatch Lieutenant Commander Worf to the station to help negotiate with the Klingon fleet. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode The Way of the Warrior")

Worf stayed on Deep Space 9. He was the most senior Starfleet officer after Captain Sisko. He also acted as the executive officer of the USS Defiant, taking command of this ship on missions when Sisko was not in command.

Worf met and fell in love with Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax, a joined Trill. They had a traditional Klingon wedding. Sadly, their union only lasted months, as a Pah-wraith-possessed Gul Dukat killed her. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

Worf was portrayed by Michael Dorn. Dorn played Officer Officer Jebediah Turner on "CHiPs".
2. Transporter clone who joined Section 31

Answer: William Boimler

Lieutenant j.g. (later Captain) William Boimler is a transporter clone created when the USS Titan was trying to beam Lt. j.g. Bradward Boimler up from Karzill IV through transporter interference. The Titan's transporter chief uses a second beam to improve the signal. Once Boimler was aboard, the chief cut the extra beam, which ended up rematerializing Boimler on the planet, creating two Boimlers. The one on the planet managed to get back to his shuttle and fly back up to the Titan, revealing the duplication.

Starfleet deemed that having two identical officers on a ship is too complex, so Captain Riker needed to send one of the Boimlers back to the USS Cerritos as an ensign. The original Boimler stepped forward to volunteer, thinking that his clone would as well. But that didn't happen, so Bradward Boimler was sent back to the Cerritos. As he was leaving Riker's ready room, the clone Boimler decided to change his first name to William, in a sycophantic gesture towards Captain William Riker. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Kayshon, His Eyes Open")

About a year later, William Boimler was reportedly killed when neurocine gas leaked into his quarters. In reality, he was only apparently dead. His body was given a "burial in space", basically being ejected within an empty photon torpedo case. Then, Section 31 retrieved his body, reanimated him, and he joined Section 31. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus")

William Boimler became the captain of the USS Anaximander, a Defiant-class Section 31 vessel. Its mission was to find and stop the source of quantum fissures that kept opening around the galaxy. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Fissure Quest")

William Boimler was voiced by Jack Quaid, the same actor who voiced Bradward Boimler.
3. Picard's best friend's son

Answer: Wesley Crusher

Wesley Crusher is the son of Lieutenant Jack Crusher and Dr. Beverly Crusher. His father died on an away mission while under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard when Wesley was just five years old.

When Dr. Crusher was offered the chief medical officer post on the new USS Enterprise-D, she brought Wesley along. This was because families were now allowed on the new Galaxy-class starships, given their size. Wesley was a science prodigy, inventing new devices and tackling tough assignments in the onboard school. Picard gave him the rank of acting ensign, which allowed Wesley to serve at the helm on the bridge. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Where No One Has Gone Before") A couple of years later, Picard made him a full ensign after Wesley recognized Will Riker's distress call hidden in the engine static of the Ferengi vessel that had kidnapped him, Deanna Troi, and her mother, Lwaxana. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Ménage à Troi")

Wesley eventually left the Enterprise to attend Starfleet Academy. While there, he became a member of Nova Squadron, an elite flight team. Their leader, Nicholas Locarno, cajoled them into trying a prohibited flight maneuver - the Kolvoord Starburst - that they would perform at that year's graduation ceremony. Their practice attempt failed, causing their vessels to crash and causing the death of one of their squadronmates - Joshua Albert. Initially covering up what they were attempting, Wesley finally came forward with what the squadron's plans were. This caused the expulsion of Locarno, and the others' academic credits for that year were voided. ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The First Duty")

Wesley Crusher was portrayed by Wil Wheaton throughout "Star Trek: The Next Generation", as well as in "Star Trek: Picard", "Star Trek: Lower Decks", and the movie "Star Trek: Nemesis."
4. First child born on USS Voyager

Answer: Naomi Wildman

Naomi Wildman was the first child born on USS Voyager after it was seized and brought to the Delta Quadrant. Her mother, Ensign Samantha Wildman, was pregnant with her unknowingly until after Voyager arrived across the galaxy. Naomi's father, Greskrendtregk, was a Ktarian. Naomi appeared to be human, but her Ktarian heritage was evident with four small forehead horns.

She grew fast, mostly due to writers wanting to use her character, instead of having a baby/toddler they couldn't write for. (On tvtropes.org, this is called "Plot-Relevant Age-Up".) Another quirk in the portrayal of Naomi: the first two young actresses who played Naomi had three little Ktarian horns on their foreheads. But on the older two actresses, there were four horns. This was probably simple because the older actresses simply had bigger foreheads and could accommodate an extra horn.

Naomi Wildman was portrayed by four actresses for various ages: Emily Leibovitch as an infant ("Star Trek: Voyager" episodes "Deadlock" and "Basics, Part II"), Brooke Stephens as a young child ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Mortal Coil"), Scarlett Pomers as an older child and primary actress in sixteen episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager", and by Vanessa Branch as a young woman from an alternate timeline ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Shattered").
5. Bajoran vedek who became kai after Opaka

Answer: Winn Adami

Winn Adami was a Vedek in the time after the Cardassians ended their occupation of Bajor. She was elected Kai after Opaka had to remain in the Gamma Quadrant and Bareil Antos had to withdraw his candidacy. She was an opportunist and arrogant. She was deeply offended that an off-worlder - Benjamin Sisko - was bestowed upon to be the Emissary of the Prophets. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine").

She is later tricked by the Pah-wraiths and Gul Dukat (disguised as a Bajoran named Anjohl Tennan) into betraying the prophets. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" season 7).

Winn Adami was portrayed by Louise Fletcher. Fletcher is best known as Nurse Mildred Ratched in the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
6. First officer of the USS Enterprise-D

Answer: William Riker

Commander (later Captain) William T. Riker was the first officer of the newly commissioned USS Enterprise-D. He served in that capacity throughout the life of that ship. He turned down various promotions to stay aboard the Enterprise. He did become acting captain when the Borg kidnapped Jean-Luc Picard and assimilated him into a spokesman Borg named Locutus ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes "Best of Both Worlds, Parts I and II"), and again when Picard was thought killed (but again, kidnapped). ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Gambit, Parts I and II")

He remained Picard's Number One when they were assigned to the USS Enterprise-E. One of its first adventures was following a Borg sphere through a time vortex to 21st century Earth, where the Borg attacked the Montana base of Zefram Cochrane. This disabled the scheduled launch of the Phoenix, Cochrane's experimental warp drive ship. Riker and a team of engineers worked with Cochrane to get the Phoenix ready to fly again. This was important because a Vulcan ship was going to be flying by Earth's solar system, and their detection of the Phoenix's warp flight would be the beginning of Earth's contact with the rest of the galaxy. For the actual flight, Riker and La Forge rode along with Cochrane. (movie "Star Trek: First Contact")

Riker was promoted to captain and given command of the USS Titan (NCC-80102). The USS Cerritos and USS Titan were the only two ships that were in range when the USS Solvang sent out a brief distress call from the Kalla system. The Cerritos initially responded, but when they arrived in the Kalla system, they found the Solvang utterly destroyed, and a Pakled clumpship salvaging its parts and adding them to itself. It then turned and attacked the Cerritos. As it was on the verge of being destroyed, the USS Titan came to their rescue. ("Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "No Small Parts")

William Riker was portrayed and voiced by Jonathan Frakes. Besides acting as Riker, Frakes has also directed episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (8 episodes), "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (3 episodes), "Star Trek: Voyager" (3 episodes), "Star Trek: Picard" (6 episodes), "Star Trek: Discovery" (8 episodes), "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" (2 episodes), and movies "Star Trek: First Contact" and "Star Trek: Insurrection".
7. Vorta whose several clones orchestrated the Federation-Dominion War

Answer: Weyoun

Weyoun was actually five different beings, all clones of some progenitor being. The Vorta, Weyoun's species, was engineered by the Changelings of the Dominion to be their voice amongst the solid species of the galaxy. Legend is that they were engineered from some small, timid primates on a forest world. When a Changeling was trying to escape a group of solids that were pursuing it, a family of Vorta hid the Changeling from them. In gratitude, the Changeling said it would return someday and make the Vorta into powerful beings.

Each clone of Weyoun would have the memories of its predecessor. That way, it would not have to re-learn its function.

When the Dominion first made inroads into the Alpha Quadrant, it was Weyoun 4 that led the organization of the Dominion's maneuvers.

When a clone died, its replacement was activated. When Weyoun 5 died and Weyoun 6 was activated, something went wrong. Instead of continuing in its job running the Dominion's incursion into the Alpha Quadrant, it held the belief that the war was wrong. However, he still had an ingrained loyalty to the Founders. So he sought out Odo, a Changeling who was not associated with the Dominion, to surrender himself and offer information that would help the Federation win the war. However, when it was realized by the Dominion that Weyoun 6 was a traitor, Weyoun 7 was activated and pursued Weyoun 6, ultimately killing him. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Treachery, Faith and the Great River")

Ultimately, Weyoun 7 was also killed (by Worf), leading Weyoun 8 to conduct the final actions of the Federation-Dominion war. In those closing days, the cloning facility on Rondac III was destroyed. So when Weyoun 8 was killed, there was no clone to replace him. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "The Changing Face of Evil" and "What You Leave Behind")

The Weyouns were all portrayed by Jeffry Combs. Combs is well-known for his many appearances on "Star Trek" productions.
8. Starfleet flag officer in command of military operations in the Federation-Dominion War

Answer: William Ross

Vice Admiral Ross was the flag officer who oversaw the Federation forces during the Federation-Dominion war. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine")

Ross was portrayed by Barry Jenner.
9. Commanding officer of USS Lexington during M-5 war games

Answer: Bob Wesley

Commodore Wesley was in command of the USS Lexington when it and three other starships were set against the USS Enterprise in a set of war games designed to challenge the M-5 computer, which was installed on the Enterprise. (M-5 was designed to operate a starship completely, replacing most of the crew, only needing biological beings aboard for routine servicing and to populate landing parties.) Sadly, M-5 went rogue, and instead of fighting the other ships with reduced-power weapons, it attached with full power. It destroyed the USS Excalibur and killed 53 aboard the Lexington.

Kirk managed to reason with M-5, making it realize that it had killed Starfleet personnel. It decided to commit suicide, and completely lowered the defenses of the Enterprise. Instead of raising them again, to fend off the Lexington rightly retaliating, Kirk kept them down. He correctly counted on Wesley figuring that Kirk had regained control of the Enterprise. ("Star Trek" episode "The Ultimate Computer")

Wesley retired from Starfleet to become governor of Mantilles, the most remote inhabited planet in the Federation. The planet was threatened by a sentient cosmic cloud, but Governor Wesley remained calm. He evacuated the children from the colony. Fortunately, the USS Enterprise under Kirk was able to communicate with the cloud and diverted it away from Mantilles. ("Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "One of Our Planets Is Missing")

Bob Wesley was portrayed by Barry Russo in "Star Trek". He had earlier portrayed security chief Giotto in episode "The Devil in the Dark".

Bob Wesley was voiced by James Doohan in "Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "One of Our Planets Is Missing". Doohan voiced most of the incidental male characters in "Star Trek: The Animated Series" as a cost-cutting measure.
10. Bajoran assimilated by the Borg, given designation 3 of 9

Answer: Marika Wilkarah

Marika Wilkarah was a Bajoran Starfleet engineering officer who served on the USS Excalibur. It was attacked by the Borg, and she was assimilated. She became part of Seven of Nine's unimatrix, being designated as Three of Nine, Auxiliary Processor of Unimatrix Zero One.

After Seven became part of USS Voyager's crew, three others from her unimatrix became free of the Borg collective: Two (Lansor), Three (Marika), and Four (P'Chan) of Nine. But they were inexplicably mentally linked to each other. They could read each other's thoughts, but they could not establish their own identities. They sought out Seven to see if she could help them. The Voyager's EMH found that they had an organic structure in their brains (engineered by Seven years ago) that created their own three-drone collective. He could deactivate it, but it would mean that those three would die in a matter of weeks. Seven convinced him that they'd rather live free for weeks rather than rejoin the Borg and live indefinitely.

After being cured of the link, Marika Wilkarah chose to remain on Voyager for the rest of her days. She said she couldn't forgive Seven for creating the link and forcing them to return to the Borg years before, but that she did understand why she did it. ("Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Survival Instinct")

Marika Wilkarah (aka Three of Nine) was portrayed by Bertila Damas. Damas also portrayed Sakonna, a Vulcan who was an early member of the Maquis. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "The Maquis, Part I" and "The Maquis, Part II")
11. Nurse aboard USS Cerritos

Answer: Westlake

Commander Westlake was a nurse who worked under Dr. T'Ana on the USS Cerritos. The character was named after Chris Westlake, the music composer for "Star Trek: Lower Decks".

Nurse Westlake was strictly a non-speaking background character until the fourth season episode "Twovix", when he was voiced by James Sie.
12. Captain who oversaw the refit of USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)

Answer: Will Decker

Captain Will Decker was recommended by the recently-promoted Rear Admiral Kirk to become the captain of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in charge of its refit after its 5-year mission with Kirk. Just before it was ready to be launched, a mysterious entity was approaching Earth. It was considered a threat, as it had apparently destroyed three Klingon cruisers that intercepted it as it was passing through Klingon space. As the Enterprise was the only starship near Earth at the time and Decker hadn't accrued any command experience, Kirk re-assumed command of the Enterprise and demoted Decker to commander and made him the first officer. They then set out to intercept the entity, which identified itself as "V'ger". ("Star Trek: The Motion Picture")

Although it wasn't confirmed in any production of "Star Trek", Will Decker was intended to be the son of Commodore Matt Decker, who died attacking the planet killer machine in "Star Trek" episode "The Doomsday Machine".

Will Decker was portrayed by Stephen Collins. Collins is best known as Reverend Eric Camden on "7th Heaven".
