Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team had to complete a Speed Bump in the race's third leg (in Lalitpur, Nepal)?

Answer: Steph and Ben

Teams raced onward into Leg 3 as soon as they hit the Pit Stop mat atop Kathmandu's Swayambhunath Temple, and cracking open their clues, they were told to have a taxi take them to Patan Durbar Square in the nearby city of Lalitpur. There, racers needed to locate the stone water fountains, known as Manga Hiti, and fill large bowls with drinking water that they would need to deliver along a marked course through the city's Old Town, filling a bucket at the end in a community courtyard.

Upon arriving there, Steph and Ben, who were tasked with a Speed Bump for placing last at the previous Pit Stop, had to finish this task with bowls containing holes.
2. The Road Block encountered in Leg 3 had team members partaking in pottery. What did they need to make?

Answer: Bowl

After the water-carrying task, racers had to get themselves to the city of Bhaktapur, known for its traditional crafts. Here, at the aptly-named Pottery Square, one member of each time needed to get behind the wheel and partake in learning local pottery techniques. For this, the participating teammates needed to make a basic bowl, shaping the clay to a judge's approval. Scott, Benfield, Bernie, Epiphany, Rob, Leah, Aesha, Marx, Leni, Lindy, and Ben were selected for this challenge.
3. Racers who completed the 'Brush On' Detour option in Leg 3 (in Bhaktapur), had to paint which of these?

Answer: Door

Leaving the Road Block, racers remained in Bhaktapur for their Detour, a choice between 'Brush On' and 'Brush Off', and both were physical errands. Teams who completed the 'Brush On' Detour were sent to the neighbourhood around Golmadhi to find a series of marked, medieval doors. First, racers had to sand down a door and its frame and then, once approved, they would need to paint it one solid colour.
4. Which team did NOT complete the 'Brush Off' Detour option, cleaning roofing tiles in Leg 3 (in Bhaktapur)?

Answer: Luke and Scott

In the 'Brush Off', Detour option, teams located Bhaktapur Durbar Square and assisted locals in clean-up and construction efforts for the city, still recovering from significant earthquakes. Here, racers needed to clean a total of fifty-five roof tiles, scrubbing them down in a bucket of water to prepare them for a temple's restoration. Getting them fully cleaned to the approval of local builders would allow them to head on their way.

Gretel and Epiphany, Steve and Bernie, Rob and Georgie, Dom and Marx, Melissa and Leah, Aesha and Scott, Brendan and Leni, Lindy and Stella, and Steph and Ben all went for this task with only Bronte and Benfield and Luke and Scott finishing 'Brush On'.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race in Bhaktapur at the end of Leg 3?

Answer: Bronte and Benfield

After wrapping up their Detours, racers were instructed to make their way on foot to the third Pit Stop of the competition, closing out two days of continuous racing by finding Beau and the mat waiting at Nepal's tallest pagoda temple, Nyatapola Temple.

This time, brothers Steve and Bernie navigated their way to a first place victory, narrowly overtaking mother and daughter Gretel and Epiphany at the Detour. It was the 'Brush Off' Detour that held up the back of the pack, leaving frontrunners Bronte and Benfield in last place due to a lack of understanding of the clue.

The pair were subsequently eliminated from the race, leaving in eleventh.
6. Arriving at the Registan in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, racers had to eat bread and what local delicacy?

Answer: Sheep fat

Opening a clue in the streets of Kathmandu, Nepal, racers were told that their fourth leg would start in earnest when they touched down in the city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan (via a connecting flight in Istanbul). There, teams departed from the airport in the order upon which they arrived at the previous Pit Stop and were told to make their way to the Registan Square. Arriving in this central landmark, they would have to start the day with a meal of Samarkand non and qurdiuq. If they could stomach this local sacred bread and a side of fried sheep's fat, they could get their next clue.
7. The 'Fruit' Detour task in Samarkand in Leg 4 had teams selling fruit juice, but what fruit was it?

Answer: Pomegranate

Racers were market-bound after their meals at the Registan as they embarked on a Detour choice waiting for them at Samarkand's Siyob Bazaar. Teams who chose 'Fruit' needed to become salespeople in the busy market, using their skills to convince locals to purchase enough bottles of pomegranate juice (pressed and bottled by themselves) to accumulate 200,000 so'm, or approximately $25 AUD.

Steph and Ben, Melissa and Leah, Brendan and Leni, Luke and Scott, and Lindy and Stella completed this task.
8. Did teams need to eat to complete the 'Veg' Detour task in Samarkand?

Answer: No

Anyone who didn't feel confident in their abilities to sell groceries in Siyob Bazaar could, instead, attempt to construct a market stall instead. In the 'Veg' Detour option, racers had to pick a station and sort through beetroots, potatoes, golden carrots, and radishes, stacking them into their proper piles to replicate the towering market stall to a shopkeeper's approval.

Steve and Bernie, Dom and Marx, Rob and Georgie, Aesha and Scott, and Gretel and Epiphany took on this task.
9. Racers were Intersected in Samarkand, Uzbekistan (in Leg 4) to complete which of the following?

Answer: An ancient dance

Leaving their respective Detours, racers proceeded by taxi from the Silk Road bazaar to Samarkand's Alisher Navoi Central Park Theatre whereupon they were required to learn the choreography of a traditional Uzbek dance called the Andijan polka. What they didn't know until they arrived was the fact that they would be encountering an Intersection, sharing in this experience with another team. If all four racers could perform in sync, they could get their last clue for the leg.
10. Which team was eliminated in Samarkand at the end of Leg 4?

Answer: Steph and Ben

Once teams completed the polka task, they could split up from being Intersected and catch a taxi to the race's fourth Pit Stop waiting at the Medieval-era Ulugh Beg Observatory. There, Beau checked the pairs in at one of the greatest scientific wonders of Central Asia, giving Dom and Marx their second win of the race over their Intersection partners, Brendan and Leni.

At the back of the pack, the final four teams checked in close to one another, but it was Steph and Ben who arrived last. Beau sent the brother and sister home in tenth place as a result.
