Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Racers started "The Amazing Race Australia 9" in what Nepali city, home to Phewa Lake?

Answer: Pokhara

Racers started this race at the top of the world, high in the Himalayas in the city of Pokhara, Nepal. Setting off from the Buddhist monument of Shanti Stupa, thirteen teams commenced their first leg by proceeding downward into the mountain valleys including across Phewa Lake, to local monastic schools, and into the hillside farm terraces before they located their very first Pit Stop.

Teams also continued into their first two Road Blocks at the start of the race's second leg before they flew to Kathmandu midway through.
2. Was Nyatapola Temple home to a Virtual Pit Stop?

Answer: No

With a tumultuous set of three legs in Nepal, teams were met by a tough high-elevation first leg, a city-crossing second leg ending in a non-elimination Virtual Pit Stop, and a third leg taking racers into the artisan town of Bhaktapur, where they had to proceed on foot to an actual Pit Stop in front of Nyatapola Temple, the tallest temple in the nation.

Interestingly, by the time teams hit the mat here, three teams would be eliminated from the race with Ed and Tiff exiting on Leg 1, Ant and Dan being disqualified before the start of Leg 2, and Bronte and Benfield falling behind during the Leg 3 Detour.
3. Starting their visits to Uzbekistan in Samarkand, racers stopped at the Registan for an early meal. It consisted of which of these?

Answer: Bread and animal fat

Two legs laid themselves out for teams in the city of Samarkand as they proceeded from Nepal to Uzbekistan in Leg 4, and this started with a meal of non and qurdiuq in front of the Registan. After having to be salespeople in a local bazaar and joining together for an Intersection, it was Ben and Steph who were sent home. Leg 5 kept people in Samarkand for a night leg in the Soviet-era Chekhov District where, at an out-of-season water park, none of the teams went home.
4. Racers drove themselves out of Samarkand in Leg 6, heading to the village of Tersak. Which team took a penalty here to move past the Detour?

Answer: Dom and Marx

Heading into the rural hills outside of Samarkand, racers had to complete a number of tasks that involved tilling the fields, making food, herding donkeys, and playing local instruments before heading to the Pit Stop, but the day proved to be a series of fatal errors for front-runners Dom and Mark who, after taking a thirty minute penalty for failing to complete a cheese-making Detour, kept making mistakes that led to all eight other teams reaching the mat before they were allowed to check in. It left only eight teams still in the race.
5. The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque was the first destinations teams needed to visit in Colombo, Sri Lanka in Leg 8. How many teams visited it?

Answer: Six

Leg 7, which saw the eight racing teams navigating the sights, sounds, and heat of Negombo, Sri Lanka, proved to be a decider for a number of them. Not only did Brendan (of Brendan and Leni) run the leg alone due to his daughter's emergent illness, but Lindy and Stella were pulled by the medical team due to heat exhaustion. What this meant was that even though racers hit another non-elimination Virtual Pit Stop, only six teams would continue to the city of Colombo in Leg 8.
6. At the top of Sigiriya Rock in Leg 9, racers had to locate which of these, found near the top, for their clue box?

Answer: The king's throne

The final of three legs in Sri Lanka put teams onto trains that took them away from the coast and into the inland jungles to find the ancient city of Sigiriya. Here, racers climbed to the top of Sigiriya Rock and descended once again to become snake charmers (actually!). Teams also had to drive their own tuk-tuks before completing one of two cultural, artistic tasks for their Detour and heading off to the race's ninth Pit Stop.

Here, after nine legs, Melissa and Leah checked in in last place in a close finish, even though Steve and Bernie took a penalty at the Pit Stop, and were eliminated from the race.
7. In Legs 10 and 11, teams spent a day and night in what Southeast Asian capital?

Answer: Taipei

The penultimate nation that teams encountered in this season of the race was Taiwan, and Legs 10 and 11, performed back-to-back, had the final five starting their day keeping active with tasks that tested them in reflexology, virtual reality, and Taiwanese song and dance.

By the time night started to fall and teams stepped on the Pit Stop mat in Taipei Cinema Park, they were already on the streets again, making their way through bustling markets and enjoying the fusion of old and new en route to another Pit Stop in the midst of packed crowds.

Interestingly, neither of these legs saw an elimination, likely due to the earlier spate of unexpected exits in Sri Lanka.
8. Travelling through the Wulai Region in Leg 12, racers travelled through several rivers. Which one did they end the leg upon?

Answer: Nanshi River

The Wulai District's mountains, lush forests, and rivers created the picturesque and tranquil backdrop for Leg 12 wherein racers had to drive out of Taipei and dip themselves into the chilly waters of the Jiajiuliao River searching for clue envelopes.

Much of this leg took teams on a series of tasks in and around the quaint Fushan Village before they needed to learn how to fix bamboo fishing cages or perform a traditional bamboo step dance, and after all of this, it was Gretel and Epiphany who were sent home on a mat waiting on the Nanshi River.
9. Visiting the Indonesian Buddhist temple of Borobudur in Leg 14, racers had to count and mark statues on the landmark. What animal did they have to indicate?

Answer: Lion

Teams flew into Yogyakarta, Indonesia in Leg 13 but were brought much deeper into the island of Java in the race's penultimate leg, starting them out with a task that had them scaling the stairs and outlooks of the massive Borobudur Temple. After this, racers self-drove through rural Indonesia (the heat of which made several of their phone GPS units overheat) to ride tandem bikes, get messy in rice paddies, and complete their final Road Block and Detour.

In a final footrace, Aesha and Scott overtook Luke and Scott, eliminating the brothers from the competition just before its end.
10. The final leg of the race was completed in the shadow of what Indonesian volcano?

Answer: Mount Merapi

After fourteen legs of the race, the final three teams started Leg 15 on equal footing as they proceeded around one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, Mount Merapi, completing everything from endurance-based physical challenges in the mud to patience-testing tasks breaking volcanic rock to rhythmic dances amongst a Ratoh Jaroe dance troupe.

After one last memory-based task, testing their knowledge of symbols seen at the race's previous fourteen Pit Stops, it was Steve and Bernie who narrowly beat out the other two teams to win $100,000 AUD for their charity of choice.
