Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 7, teams needed to fly to the nation of Sri Lanka. To which city were they flown?

Answer: Colombo

Leaving the mountainous, rural farmlands of Uzbekistan's Samarqand Region, teams ripped open clues that had them heading to the airport for another international trip, this time to the much warmer island nation of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. After being let go from the airport in the order at which they departed from their sixth Pit Stop, teams had to locate a taxi and take the ride out to the coastal fishing village of Negombo.

Their next clue would be on the beach.
2. In the village of Negombo, racers kicking off Leg 7 had to help local sailors bring which of these boats out onto the sea?

Answer: Oruwa

Landing on the beach in Negombo, racers had to beat the heat by getting out on the water. Opening their clues next to the sand, teams discovered that they would need to join the locals by setting out to sea on one of the region's characteristic outrigger oruwa boats.

After selecting a captain and helping make the watercraft sea-ready, they would need to sail out into the ocean to reach a buoy, then dive in under the surface to locate a rope connected to their next clue. If they dredged it up, they could return to shore.
3. The Leg 7 Detour, a choice between 'Wet' and 'Dry', had racers working to prepare items for sale in which location?

Answer: Fish market

The Leg 7 Detour was 'Wet' or 'Dry', and both took racers to the Negombo Fish Market to handle some local cuisine (though, fortunately, they didn't need to eat any). In 'Wet', teams needed to take on the potentially gross task of gutting four large baskets of fish to the approval of local fishermen, preparing to sell them to locals.

In 'Dry', teams handled the already-gutted fish, setting up four barrels of fish, already soaking in brine, out on drying mats on the beach. If the fish were laid out correctly, they would receive their next clue.
4. Which racer did NOT complete the net-untangling Road Block in Negombo, Sri Lanka (in Leg 7)?

Answer: Leni

Racers who got out of the fish market in Negombo were allowed to open their next clue, a Road Block, and head onward by marked tuktuk to Morawala Beach. Here, one member of each team had to be 'better at networking', and for this challenge, the selected racer had to fish a typical fishing net out of the water off the beach, bring it to shore, and fully untangle its knots and snags. Prepping the net for reuse, racers would get one last clue for the leg.

Leah, Scott, Rob, Brendan, Steve, Aesha, and Epiphany completed this task. During this leg of the race, Leni was unable to participate due to severe illness, and as such, Brendan completed all tasks solo.
5. Which team withdrew from the race upon hitting the Pit Stop mat in Leg 7?

Answer: Brendan and Leni

Leaving the Road Block, racers needed to rip open their last clue and proceed to the seventh Pit Stop mat on the picturesque sands of Aruthini Beach. Here, Aesha and Scott slipped ahead during the Road Block to win the leg, ending up followed close behind by Brendan as a solo racer and Gretel and Epiphany behind them. All teams were told, however, that this would be a Virtual Pit Stop, and the race would continue immediately with its next clue.

Because of this, Brendan opted to withdraw from the race, realizing that he wouldn't be able to continue, physically, without Leni on the subsequent leg.
6. Due to a medical emergency, which team was eliminated on the race course during Leg 7?

Answer: Lindy and Stella

The day proved to be a tough one for Lindy and Stella. After their oruwa's masts broke while the pair were collecting their clue out at sea, the mother-daughter duo attempted to brave the heat for their 'Dry' Detour task leading to Stella's bout with heat exhaustion. Medics attempted to ensure her safety by treating her onsite and in their emergency vehicle, but by the time all other teams had passed through the Virtual Pit Stop, nothing had changed in her condition. Because of this, Beau located them out on the race course and eliminated them in eighth place, leaving only six teams still racing.
7. Teams started Leg 8 with a task requiring that they deliver which of these Sri Lankan fruits to a city vendor?

Answer: Jackfruit

While teams left the race throughout Leg 7, the remaining six teams left the Virtual Pit Stop in Negombo and were told to travel by local bus to the heart of Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo. There, racers would have to locate the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque.

This clue would have them working through a hefty task in the nearby Pettah Market. There, racers would load a cart with a dozen massive jackfruit and haul them to a waiting vendor at 142 4th Cross Street. They could trade them for their next clue.
8. The 'Cuppa' Detour task at the Galle Face Hotel had teams serving which beverage?

Answer: Tea

Teams' jackfruit deliveries resulted in the receipt of a Detour task, and this time, teams had either 'Cuppa' or 'Cracker'.

In 'Cuppa', racers needed to visit the Galle Face Hotel to join the wait staff. Dressing the part, team members had to memorize Ceylon tea orders in the garden and return to the tea room to collect the proper teas for their guests. The catch was that none of them were labeled, so teams needed to identify the teas by smell and taste. Rob and Georgie, Aesha and Scott and Gretel and Epiphany took this task.

'Cracker' instead had teams heading to the Galle Face Beach to make Sri Lankan street food, specifically Egg Hoppers, made from fermented rice flour and egg. If they could make eight, they could keep racing. Steve and Bernie, Luke and Scott, and Melissa and Leah completed this one.
9. Playing the Sri Lankan game of Kana Mutti Bindima at the end of Leg 8, racers had to smash pots aiming for one containing what colour water?

Answer: Yellow

After their Detours, racers had to locate a final task at Viharamahadevi Park that allowed them to partake in a local tradition performed on Sinhalese New Year. For this, racers played Kana Mutti Bindima, and to do so, one racer had to be blindfolded while the other, directing their teammate around a covered area, needed to get the blindfolded racer to swat at hanging pots with a heavy stick.

Many of these were filled with red water, but if racers could hit the pots containing yellow water and a race token, they could trade the token for their last clue of the leg.
10. Which team was last to arrive at the eighth Pit Stop, finding themselves saved from elimination in sixth place?

Answer: Aesha and Scott

Leaving the task at Viharamahadevi Park, racers had to take a taxi to the coastal park of Galle Face Green to locate Beau at the race's eighth Pit Stop. Here, Rob and Georgie landed on the mat for their first victory of the race, beating out the other teams with clever and speedy navigation and effective task work.

Although Aesha and Scott started Leg 8 in first place, slow cabs and unfortunate task speed dropped them to the back of the pack. Fortunately, the couple was spared from elimination though they would need to complete a Speed Bump in the ninth leg.
