Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 'Grind' Detour task that teams completed in Yogyakarta in Leg 13 had them eating what type of food?

Answer: Spicy

Teams had to depart from the Wulai District of Taiwan and proceed to their final country of the race for three last legs, and that meant heading to the airport and catching a flight to the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta. There, racers would be able to take cabs to the market of Pasar Ngasem to open their Detour clues.

Teams who chose 'Grind' had to head into the market to help the locals make sambal, a spicy chili paste, by de-stalking chilis and grinding them with a mortar and pestle before eating a bowl of the hot condiment for their next clue.

Steve and Bernie and Luke and Scott hit the grind running.
2. Racers who completed the 'Gears' Detour option in Yogyakarta had to pick up which of these to deliver to a local home?

Answer: Coffee

Anyone who wasn't hungry upon arriving in Yogyakarta could instead complete the 'Gears' Detour task which had them using a local cycle rickshaw, known as a becak, to pedal a local home from shopping in the market. While one team member pedalled, the other would navigate with a rudimentary map, and they'd switch midway through the ride. Halfway along, they would also need to stop at Sapulu Coffee, purchase three coffees (java in Java), and drop off their passenger to get their next clue.

Aesha and Scott and Rob and Georgie geared up for this one.
3. In Leg 13, racers joined a gamelan, meaning they had to perform with which of these?

Answer: Percussion instruments

Racers who wrapped up their Detour tasks needed to proceed to Ramayana Ballet Purawisata where they would be tasked with joining a gamelan, a traditional Indonesian percussion ensemble. For this challenge, racers had to pick instruments and join the group playing either the saron or the bonang. If they could play the song chosen for them in time with their fellow musicians, the bandleader would hand over their next clue and they could keep on racing.
4. For their Road Block in Leg 13, racers had to climb bamboo poles to collect which of these?

Answer: Baskets

Leaving the gamelan task, racers cracked open a Road Block and were asked to get into 'pole position'. For this task, one racer from each pair had to join in the festivities at Minggiran Field to climb the panjat pinang, a greased bamboo pole with gifts strung from the top.

The chosen teammate needed to do this three times with the aid of a footrope, and each time, they would collect a basket, each one containing the words to make up the destination of their next Pit Stop. Rob, Bernie, and both Scotts completed this task.
5. Which team was first to arrive at the race's thirteenth Pit Stop, the last non-elimination Pit Stop of the competition?

Answer: Rob and Georgie

If racers could unscramble the words in their Road Block baskets they would be able to proceed to nDalem Ngabean to find Beau and their thirteenth Pit Stop waiting for them inside. Although Steve and Bernie left the Road Block in first place, a slow taxi driver dropped the brothers to second place, allowing Rob and Georgie to overtake and claim their fourth win.

This leg, though Luke and Scott were able to leave the Road Block in third, they too were overtaken and they stepped on the mat in last. With this being a non-elimination Pit Stop, the two were told that they would face a Speed Bump in the penultimate leg.
6. Searching around the temple of Borobudur in Leg 14, racers had to locate lion statues. How many of these did they have to find?

Answer: Twenty-five

Teams started the penultimate leg of the race with instruction to proceed into Java's rural side. The final four pairs had to get from Yogtakarta to the rainforest town of Magelang and then, from there, the massive Buddhist temple of Borobudur. Arriving there, racers had to traverse the eight terraces of the landmark searching for all twenty-five lion statues and then, when they located them, they had to map them on a large board waiting at ground level. Placing all of them precisely would get them their next clue.
7. Luke and Scott, having to complete a Speed Bump, had to locate which of these, out in the fields of Nanggulan, to get their Road Block clue?

Answer: A flag

Racers left Borobudur once their maps were made and from there they needed to drive themselves out to the town of Nanggulan to hop onto tandem bikes for a less-than-casual two kilometre ride through the fields on the hunt for a clue box amongst the rice paddies.

While all teams had to complete a Road Block here, Luke and Scott had to overcome their Speed Bump at this point, and for this task they needed to make their way into the nearby fields on foot to locate a race flag and their next clue envelope.
8. Who did NOT complete the eel-catching Road Block in Leg 14?

Answer: 'Sassy' Scott

Arriving in the Nanggulan rice fields, racers found their Road Block waiting for them under the hot sun, and this one needed a racer who thought themselves to be 'a catch'. In this solo task, the selected racers (Georgie, Aesha, Luke, and Steve) needed to bring themselves ankle-deep into the waters of the nearby rice paddies to hunt for rice paddy eels with their bare hands. If they could dig out fifteen eels and toss them into a bucket, they could keep racing.
9. Racers completed either 'Good Fortune' or 'Good Focus' as their Detour options in the race's penultimate leg. Who/what led them to their challenges?

Answer: Local children

Racers who wrapped up the Road Block got their Detour clue, and with that, teams had to drive themselves to the riverbanks of the Provo River in the village of Sambeng and there, they could choose either 'Good Fortune' or 'Good Focus', both of which could be completed by up to three teams.

In 'Good Fortune', teams had to participate in the tradition of constructing a riverside gunungan, a fruit offering for the river gods. Two hundred pieces of fruit and vegetables had to be threaded together and assembled on a frame to proper specifications to result in a clue.

In 'Good Focus', racers instead took part in Javanese seated archery trials. If one racer could hit the target more than twenty meters away, they'd be done with it.

Only Aesha and Scott completed 'Good Fortune', a result of their arriving at the Detour last.
10. Which team was the last to be eliminated from the race, placing fourth upon checking into the 14th Pit Stop?

Answer: Luke and Scott

Once teams locked away their Detour tasks, they had to race onward to Beau and the Pit Stop mat in an attempt to stay in it for the finale. Driving to the hillside site of Watu Putih in the village of Majaksingi, it was Rob and Georgie who held their lead to take their second consecutive win and their fifth victory overall.

After fourteen legs, and despite holding their own through this last chance string of tasks, Luke and Scott dropped back to fourth by the time they hit the mat due to a close footrace from the parking lot against Aesha and Scott and they were the last team eliminated from the competition.
11. In Leg 15, teams started by competing in the Kebo-Keboan, pitting them against people dressed as which of these?

Answer: Buffalo

Only one leg of the race remained as three teams started the last day of the competition at the Sumberwatu Heritage Resort in Sambirejo, Indonesia. From here, all three teams departed at the same time, on equal footing, and were told to hop into their vehicles and navigate to the Plaosan Complex.

There, teams had to test their agility, strategy, and teamwork by competing in a Javanese bullfighting ritual known as Kebo-Keboan. For this, racers had to fill a basket with rice husks using only their hands, carrying them through the mud while dodging two locals dressed as bulls. Once they filled their baskets they received their next clue.
12. In the last leg, racers had to split volcanic rocks in the shadow of what Javanese volcano?

Answer: Mount Merapi

Finishing the Kebo-Keboan task gave racers their next Route Info clue, and for this one they had to proceed to the small Javanese town of Kaliurang. Here, racers would need to direct themselves to a quarry beneath the active volcano, Mount Merapi. Testing their endurance and strength, teams needed to join the local stone-splitters and, with only a hammer, chisel, and split pins, they needed to split two large rocks in half.
13. All three teams in the final leg were tasked with performing Ratoh Jaroe, or 'The Dance of a Thousand... what'?

Answer: Hands

Leaving the quarry, teams next needed to perform a test of synchronicity and rhythm, proceeding to a local theatre to join traditional dancers. Upon arriving, racers were taught 'The Dance of a Thousand Hands', known locally as Ratoh Jaroe, a fast-paced, seated performance that required them to act in perfect unison with several other dancers to get their next clue. Once completed, all teams needed to do was head off to their memory challenge.
14. The final memory challenge of the race involved identifying symbols as they appeared on which of these?

Answer: Dragon eggs

One last task awaited teams at Teras Merapi where they were tested on their observation and memory in the traditional 'remember your race' challenge. Here, teams were given fourteen 'dragon eggs', each one representing symbols displayed on flags posted at the previous fourteen Pit Stops of the competition. If teams could place all fourteen-- from moons to yurts to lotus flowers to stupas-- in the correct order within a dragon boat, they would get their final clue as a reward.
15. Which team won "The Amazing Race Australia 9"?

Answer: Steve and Bernie

With nothing left to do after the memory challenge, racers had to get themselves to the final Pit Stop mat and the finish line of the competition waiting for them at the Sumberwatu Heritage Resort overlooking Mount Merapu. Here, after nearly a month of racing across fifteen legs and in five different countries, it was Steve and Bernie who were able to eke out the win, solving the final puzzle the quickest (despite being in last) and taking the $100,000 AUD grand prize for their charity, One In Five.

They were followed shortly after by Rob and Georgie in second place and Aesha and Scott in third.
