Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On September 8, 1979, a tragic event occurred at which spot?

Answer: Hawkins National Laboratory

In Hawkins, Indiana, on September 8, 1979, Dr. Brenner wakes up and starts his day with a coffee and a crossword puzzle before heading to work at the Hawkins National Laboratory. In one of the rooms there, his scientists observe as a number of children use their extrasensory capabilities to solve puzzles and play with toys using little more than the power of their minds. He pays particular attention to Number Ten, bringing him back to his room for more tests and finding that his capabilities are strong. After a couple of preliminary exercises, Dr. Brenner asks Ten to find another scientist, Dr. Ellis, wherever she might be in the facility; he says that she is training with Number Six in her office. He finds them with ease.

Something is wrong though. As Ten looks through the facility, he senses screaming, blood, and terror in the building. An alarm sounds and Ten notes Dr. Ellis is dead. After an explosion destroys the room, Dr. Brenner awakens from consciousness to find Ten has been killed. Passing through the halls it appears that he is the only survivor...until he reaches the playroom and finds Eleven standing alone amongst corpses.
2. Mike is expected to visit El in California during which of these?

Answer: Spring break

El writes to Mike from California months after having moved there with the Byers. This week, she says, is going fast because she's working on a visual aid for school. Joyce is working for a company selling encyclopedias over the phone. Will, meanwhile, has taken up painting though he won't show anybody the finished pictures; El thinks it's for a girl he likes. Jonathan is waiting to get into college. In the meantime his friend, Argyle, drives them to school at Lenora Hills High. El's happy with the changes in her life. She just needed to settle in, she claims.

El claims that since the move, she's made a lot of friends. It's a bit of a lie. What's not a lie, however, is that she's eager to see Mike for spring break.

Mike finishes reading El's letter just in time for Nancy to yell at him to get ready for school. Before he leaves, his mother tells him to be home by 9:00pm otherwise he won't be allowed to fly to California. She knows his 'Dungeons & Dragons' club-- Hellfire Club, he reminds her-- is in the evening. He promises he'll be back.
3. Which of these is the name of the Hawkins High School basketball team?

Answer: The Hawkins Tigers

School is starting in Indiana as well. While Mike and Nancy head out, Dustin spends his last minutes getting Suzie to hack into the Hawkins High School records to change his grade. Elsewhere, Steve and Robin argue about girls on their drive to attend the basketball game pep rally. Max gets off the bus only to catch her counselor's attention; it appears she's been skipping classes.

As the student body of Hawkins High School takes to the bleachers in the gymnasium, Robin takes her spot in the school band and the cheerleaders start tumbling. While Dustin, Mike, and Max get to their seats, Lucas hits the court as a team member on the Hawkins Tigers. The captain of the team, Jason, gives a rousing speech reminding the students of who they've lost in the past year in the tragic fire at the Starcourt Mall. All of this to rile up the teens as they head into a big tournament.

This, of course, causes problems for Hellfire Club.
4. What does Joyce find in the package shipped from Russia?

Answer: A doll

Realizing that the Tigers are playing in the tournament that very night, Mike and Dustin realize they have a conflict: Hellfire Club is supposed to run that evening, and with Lucas in the championship game, they wouldn't have him there for the end of the campaign. The boys reason that Lucas has been on the bench all season, but Lucas doesn't care; he wants to be with the popular kids and he doesn't want to be branded a 'nerd' and a 'freak' throughout his high school career. He doesn't want to be bullied anymore. He begs them to talk to Eddie to shift the date and to come to his game.

In California, a mysterious package with just a few too many Soviet stamps arrives at the Byers household. When Joyce tears into it, she's surprised to find a porcelain doll of a babushka.

At Lenora Hills High School, El has to present her diorama to her history class, explaining who her hero is. She chose Hopper, much to the amusement of her classmates. Naturally it leads her to get ridiculed, especially by Angela. She leaves the class ready to break down over it.
5. Lucas and Max, once dating, have broken up upon attending high school.

Answer: True

Max, lost in her headphones listening to Kate Bush, walks through the halls of Hawkins High School with a look of melancholy. Passing by Lucas, who's disappointed she doesn't look back, she heads to the counselor's office for an anticipated meeting. It appears that her grades have been dropping consistently since Billy's passing. Max's mom has been working two jobs...and drinking. She claims she's been sleeping better; she lies that she's had no nightmares since. It's okay to not be okay, her counselor says.

On the way out of the counselor's office, Lucas ambushes Max with a ticket to his big game. She seems ready to refuse, but he insists it's important to him. He tells her that she needs to find something important to her as well; it's like she's not even there anymore. Lucas knows something's wrong. Max argues he thinks that just because they broke up. She hands back the ticket and wishes him good luck for the game before heading to the bathroom to cry.

In the bathroom, Max pops two Tylenol for her headache before she hears Chrissy Cunningham, one of the star cheerleaders, throwing up in a bathroom stall. She offers to help but Chrissy tells her to leave. When Max departs, however, an otherworldly being appears on the other side of her stall door and tries to get in.
6. Eddie Munson refuses to move the Hellfire Club meeting. What does he suggest Dustin and Mike do instead?

Answer: Find a substitute player

At Hawkins High School, Eddie Munson makes a scene in the cafeteria just as Mike and Dustin take a seat at his table, intentionally going off about "Dungeons & Dragons" being touted as a game for Satanists. The real monster, he claims, is forced conformity. Dustin breaks the news about Lucas' big game and asks, in a roundabout way, if there's a possibility of postponing the session. No one in the Hellfire Club is particularly pleased by the suggestion. Eddie would rather they find a sub for him. Hearing that it's the championship game, he makes a big to-do about the boys being the future of Hellfire provided this is the year he actually gets his diploma. He forces them to find a replacement for Lucas, ASAP, or else.

Joyce calls Murray Bauman in the meantime, catching him to ask about the doll she received in the mail. Murray says she should be worried, especially since they foiled the Russians' operations the previous year. Joyce acknowledges that there's a crack in the porcelain body of the doll. Murray decides it'd be best to smash it...but from a distance.

In shop class, Jonathan makes a birdhouse while Argyle tries to cheer him up. Nancy, as it turns out, isn't visiting for spring break. Nancy, in Hawkins, also lets her friends know that Jonathan isn't visiting. The two of them seem to be at an impasse, with both believing that the other has more important things they need to be doing to ensure their success. On Nancy's end, her conversation comes to an end when Mike busts into the school newsroom, there to ask if she wants to join Hellfire for the night. She doesn't.

Mike and Dustin ask around for a sub with the latter even calling Steve at work to beg him to join for the evening. No one seems to give them a yes until Dustin gets the idea to grab his bike and leave the high school.
7. What is the name of Eddie's band?

Answer: Corroded Coffin

Chrissy, meanwhile, still shaken from the presumed encounter she had in the bathroom, marches across the football field and into the woods next to the property, finding her way to an empty picnic table. She hallucinates a grandfather clock nestled into one of the nearby trees and watches as it cracks open and spiders spill forth from its face. Fortunately, she bumps into Eddie as he arrives at the table, breaking her free of the vision. He's there to meet her and sell her marijuana. She's a first-time buyer, but she's desperate for anything that might help the way she's feeling.

Eddie remarks that this, as silly as it may be, isn't the first time he and Chrissy have hung out, even if she forgets it. Back in middle school, his band (Corroded Coffin) played at the same talent show at which she performed a cheer routine. He tells her to come watch the band at The Hideout on Tuesdays; he still plays guitar.

He cuts her a deal on the pot...but she asks for something a bit stronger.
8. Since the events at the Starcourt Mall, El is still without her powers.

Answer: True

In California, El receives a failed test from one of her teachers who recommends they speak with one another after the spring break. It gets worse when Angela and her friends trip her during the time between classes, destroying her diorama and making fun of her. Will steps out of the school just in time to see El losing her calm and making motions to use her powers. Fortunately, they don't work. Unfortunately, it makes El a laughing stock in front of the rest of the student body.

Joyce, still on the phone with Murray, rigs a can of paint to a rope and slings it over a tree branch in the yard. The reasoning, per Murray, is that if the doll contains an explosive, then it'll keep her safe to be at a distance. It turns out there's no explosive. What she does find is a note composed of cut-out magazine clippings. In short, it lets her know that Hopper is alive.
9. Who, inevitably, joins the boys at Hellfire Club as a last minute substitute?

Answer: Erica

In the evening, a lot appears to be happening in Hawkins. At the school, most of the students gather for the big game. While Nancy watches and reports from the sidelines, Steve escorts his date, Brenda, to her seat. Robyn, plays from the band as the principal brings in Tammy Thompson, a former student, now living in Nashville trying to make it big. Robyn and Vickey joke that she sounds like a Muppet.

Elsewhere in the school, Mike and Dustin bring their substitute, Luca's sister Erica, into the fold. Eddie refuses to allow her to join from the jump, but her attitude manages to get her far with the club. Fortunately, Erica, playing Lady Applejack, is a chaotic good half-elf rogue, level 14. She holds her own, easily, as they face off against the Dark Lord, Vecna.

Both games progress smoothly due in a large part to the Sinclairs. On the court, Lucas is swapped in due to a teammate's penalty; he manages to shoot the winning shot, bringing the Tigers to victory. At the table, Erica manages the killing blow against Vecna, saving the remaining members of the party from annihilation.
10. Who is the only witness to Chrissy Cunningham's possession and subsequent death?

Answer: Eddie

Lucas leaves the game just as the Hellfire Club closes out its last session. A bit dejectedly, he heads off to a party with the rest of the Tigers. At home, Max hears the news of the game on her radio before heading out to feed the dog. She's there as a car pulls up in front of Eddie's house across the way and she watches as he heads inside with none other than Chrissy Cunningham, there for the stronger drugs.

While Eddie roots around for his ketamine, Chrissy asks how long it takes to kick in. He assures her it's pretty quick; he just needs to find where he left it. He leaves Chrissy in the living room while he searches for his stash, and it's while he's gone that Chrissy hears the sound of a chiming grandfather clock moving closer and closer. She cries out for Eddie and rushes to his room but doesn't find him there. Instead, she finds what appears to be her mother, seated at a sewing machine. The being there isn't her mother, however. It turns around to show a ghastly visage.

As Chrissy turns to rush away, she finds herself in her family home, chased through its halls by something awful, experiencing visions of her family, dead, and unable to help.

When Eddie finally finds the stash, he returns to the living room to find Chrissy standing still, starring into the void before her. In fugue, something awful descends the staircase and follows her to a dead end. Eddie's unable to awaken her and can only watch in horror as, while she's taken by the creature in her dream world, she levitates off the floor in the real world. As she's killed in her mind, her body is broken into pieces on the ceiling.
