Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Other than the equipment needed to survive the Desert, one of the most important things to account for is dealing with the Desert's exclusive foe, listed in-game as a "special enemy." Zombie Ranchers are formidable foes. Which of the following is true about them?

Answer: They have a projectile

Upon sighting the player, even if the player themselves is unaware of their presence, Zombie Ranchers will always start by coughing out a swarm of Zombie Bees. If the bees hit, they don't deal too much damage, but they will greatly slow the player down and obscure their vision with the nasty critters. It also boasts a very high 20% infection chance, an infection rate higher than anything the player has seen to this point.

Zombie Ranchers are not invincible, with the same exact healthpool as regular Zombies. But they definitely pose more of a threat.
2. Zombie Ranchers, Vultures, and a higher general quantity of Zombies in the Desert makes it recommended for the player to bring at least an item or two that could combat the Infection status. Which item of the following, upon usage, will lower the user's Infection?

Answer: Jar of Honey

Honey reduces Infection by 5% on each usage. The Wasteland Treasure Volume 1 book will grant the user a 5% chance to receive Honey when cutting down trees. This, or at the very least keeping Honey or perhaps Antibiotics in the player's inventory, is strongly recommended before venturing into the Desert for any long stretch of time.

Antibiotics are another option. Regular antibiotics and Herbal Antibiotics crafted through a Campfire both reduce Infection by 10% on each usage. Honey can also be used to craft things, such as Honey Tea or Glazed honey Stew. These items do not actually reduce Infection more than regular Honey does though, which makes crafting them out to be questionable if facing any sort of remote limitation the user's resource supply.

Although Infection takes a long time to get seriously hindering, it is also difficult to get rid of. It only takes a single zombie hit to apply Infection, at which point the player would need Honey or some form of Antibiotics, lest they die a very slow death to the status. Infection has four stages, reached through letting it go untreated for extended lengths of time. The very moment the player reaches the fourth stage, they will instantaneously die.
3. By the point the player is strong enough for the Desert, they will typically possess a motor vehicle or a tool, such as the motorcycle or chainsaw. This is great, as the Desert exclusively houses this farmable resource to help with that equipment. Which of the following can exclusively be mined from the Desert?

Answer: Oil Shale

Oil Shales can, of course, be used to craft Fuel needed to power motor contraptions. They could also be used to make straight up Oil if needed, although there are many easier, more convenient ways to obtain Oil outside of the Desert.
4. Trader Bob is the trader belonging to the Desert. What is Bob's specialty?

Answer: Vehicles/Vehicle Utilities

Players will likely eventually want to craft really cool vehicles, such as the Gyrocopter or Monster Truck. Doing this will make an eventual trip to Bob's inevitable, as the skill needed to craft these vehicles is extremely high. Players will likely be unable to craft parts to advanced vehicles even by the end game unless a friend group playing the game is particularly large. Forget about it if you happen to be playing solo; Bob's the man who makes a Gyrocopter obtainable in such an instance.
5. A deadly new threat (assuming the player didn't skip the Desert for later game areas), these four-legged beasts only appear in the Desert at night, and offer a preview of a much scarier threat yet to come. What enemy of the following does not appear in the Pine or Burnt Forests, and appears at the Desert during the night?

Answer: Zombie Wolf

Zombie Bears or regular Bears can be lured into the Desert, but will not appear unprompted. The former is also scarier than Zombie Wolves, so the player should not pick a fight with it unless they have a heck of a plan, or are armed to the teeth.

Dire Wolves are, bar none, the scariest enemies in the entire game, even more formidable than Zombie Bears. Thankfully, they do not appear in the Desert, leaving lesser Zombie Wolves in their stead. The Desert is directly adjacent to the Wasteland, where Dire Wolves can and will appear though, so the player should be careful specifically when approaching this border.

For all intents and purposes, Zombie Wolves are essentially Dire Wolves, but weaker. Even this is still very threatening, as Zombie Wolves are big, move faster than the player on foot and deal lots of relentless damage up close. They tend to appear alone, but can travel in small packs during Blood Moons.
6. In order to survive in the Desert for any extended period of time, Desert Gear is required. If this isn't available, Sunstroke Tonic can allow for abbreviated appearances in the Desert. What is one ingredient needed to craft Sunstroke Tonic?

Answer: Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera, Mushrooms, Oil Shales and Water are needed to craft Sunstroke Tonic. Aloe Vera and Oil Shale can only be actively mined from the Desert itself, necessitating the player obtain these from a Trader. Trader Jen from the Burnt Forest commonly sells both of these resources.

The Burnt Forest, while not mandatory to explore before the Desert, is an earlier game area than the Desert. Newer players are therefore highly recommended to venture into the Burnt Forest, and equip themselves to comfortably survive here, before checking out the Desert.
7. Every biome in this game contains one city, and the Desert is no exception. The Desert houses a city known as "Departure." Which of the following is true about Departure?

Answer: It has the tallest building in the entire game

Gravestowne is a fair bit larger than Departure, and would've been experienced in the Burnt Forest. For as vast as Gravestowne is, however, it is not home to any building taller than the Dishong Tower, a huge structure in Departure stretching up to a whole fifteen floors tall.
8. Unsurprisingly, weather is a common foe aside from zombies in the Desert. What is the Ambient Temperature Range here, in Fahrenheit?

Answer: 95-105 degrees

This is significant as, at 100 degrees, the player will suffer a debuff to their stamina recovery that worsens the longer their temperature stays at 100 degrees. If the debuff remains long enough, the player will begin to take damage as the game warns them that they're suffering from a heat stroke. To fight this, clothing items like the cowboy hat or bandana are recommended, in conjunction with very light clothing that ideally comes with cooling mods on it. If all else fails, constant consumption of Red Tea or Pure Mineral Water applies the Cooling status that will easily keep the player under 100 degrees.
9. Although extremely rare, the Desert exclusively gives players the chance to loot the Apache Artifact Chest. Where in the Desert can this potentially be looted?

Answer: Caves

If playing the standard Navezgane seed, there are three caves within the Desert that could hold this chest. It would be best if the player first attempted to accept a Retrieve Supplies mission at these caves, as this will not only respawn all loot within them, but also give the player a slightly higher chance to find one.

If playing a randomized setting, and not standard Navezgane, there could potentially be dozens of caves in the Desert, just as easily as there may not be any caves here at all. If there are no caves at all, the Apache Artifact Chest becomes impossible to find.
10. The Apache Artifact Chest, even when obtained, has a chance to be a complete dud. The main prize players seek when looking for this chest is the Taza's Stone Axe. Can the Taza's Stone Axe be acquired any way other than through an Apache Artifact Chest?

Answer: No

The Apache Artifact Chest has a minor chance to appear in caves and, once obtained the Taza's Stone Axe still has an only 33% chance to be inside of it. There is also a 33% chance to get a random albeit high amount of Duke's Casino Tokens, and a 33% chance to receive Old Cash which is virtually worthless regardless of the quantity. As such, the player will most likely have to acquire more than one Apache Artifact Chest to get the Taza's Stone Axe.

This axe is quite a nifty tool, functioning as an axe, a butchering tool and a mining tool in one. No other tool has quite this level of versatility. It is not completely necessary however, as the player generally has more than enough inventory space to where they could fit an axe, a separate butchering tool and a separate mining tool without too much issue. If the player is having inventory problems, however, the Taza's Stone Axe could potentially be extremely useful.
