Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ruth Finnegan killed her husband, Bob Finnegan in The Secret of the Forbidden Flesh case. What was her motivation?

Answer: She wanted to escape her marriage to him

The particular catalyst which finally drove Ruth over the edge was her husband's vicious criticism of her vegetable soup, which she had spent hours preparing. But in general, Ruth's marriage to Bob was very unhappy, so she killed him as a means to escape him.
2. In The Secret of the Pink Chewing Gum case, what is the name of the child who steals Eric Elmer's video player?

Answer: Tommy Moore

Moore apparently stole the video player after taking his backpack into the Elmer family bathroom, sneaking out the window, going in the house through another window, grabbing it, and stuffing it in his backpack. He would then seamlessly return to the bathroom, then back to his friends as if nothing had happened.

The player has the opportunity to indict one of three different children in this case. Interestingly, despite all kids involved clearly being kids, and nobody actually getting killed or even injured, the culprit does get charged as an adult later. This wildly absurd outcome is meant to remind us that this is, indeed, a video game.
3. In The Mystery of the Black Box case, Emil Pederson snuck into a courthouse and stole a ton of recent parolee files. This crime was motivated by religion. What religion does Pederson identify by?

Answer: Paganism

Pederson's ultimate motivation in stealing these files was to "help them embark on a better path." However, it's worth noting that Pederson deliberately discarded all files relating to male parolees, and kept only files pertaining to female parolees. Were his motivations as noble as he claims? Probably not, which is why it's good if the player manages to take him down.
4. The player can send Emil Pederson to immediately be convicted by the court. But they may not want to do this, as Pederson can instead be used as an informant. What gang does Pederson belong to?

Answer: The Woodsmen

There are only actually three gangs in this game, way down from the dozen that were in "This is the Police." Pederson belongs to The Woodsmen, who are by far the least threatening to deal with between themselves, the Spinach Berserks, and the Neckties.

However, if the player uses him as an informant and eventually arrests all Woodsmen, they will receive a piping hot reward of $45,000, which is quite a lot in this game. As such, the player should definitely refrain on immediately convicting Pederson of his crime.
5. Peter Knudsen broke into a hospital and stole a number of patient personal files in The Riddle of the Purloined Data case. He would've gotten away with it, but his getaway vehicle ended up being very identifiable. What car did Knudsen drive?

Answer: A convertible

Before his name is discovered, Knudsen is referred to as "the man in the convertible", as this is the type of car he is seen putting a stolen computer into. Knudsen was otherwise very sneaky on his heist, as he wore a very concealing black face mask, did the deed at night, and did so without making any noise. He just did not take care to evade surveillance cameras.
6. The Night Terrors on the Ward case largely suggests that Dan Brom killed Michael, the disabled patient at the Sharpwood Hospital. Did Dan Brom do the killing?

Answer: No

It turns out that it was actually Alison Spivey, a nurse at the hospital, who suffocated Michael with a pillow. And the reasoning for this ends up being truly ridiculous, as it ends up being that Michael was especially needy one night, moreso than usual. Having to tend to him more prevented Spivey from reading a book called "The Last Temptation of Neptune 2" which had just released in Sharpwood. Being angry she couldn't read the book, she murdered him.

Don't get in the way of people and their highly anticipated releases, especially in Sharpwood.
7. In the Secret of the Heaping Pile case, Anthony Pratt, the funeral home director, breaks into his own business to steal a diesel generator. In its stead, he leaves behind quite the gift. What does Pratt "replace" the generator with?

Answer: A pile of poo

Hilariously, this poo ends up being exactly what gets Pratt caught in the end, as it can be directly linked to him. The idea was that Pratt was attempting to punish his employees for inefficient use of the generator that was harming his business. Perhaps he should have gone the more conventional route and simply replaced them instead.
8. The Mysterious Murder of Britt Carter is quite the exclamatory case, as Britt Carter had just spent the past week competing with the player at the police department. Someone had a very good reason for wanting to 'silence' Carter. Which gang was responsible for this?

Answer: The Neckties

The idea here is that, while Jack Boyd (character the player is playing as) is arguably corrupt and can be 'accessed' by the Necktie gang, Britt Carter is as straight and narrow as they come and would never willingly work with them. Carter challenges Jack for his role as chief of police. If Carter happened to win, it would deal a blow to the Neckties. As such, with them viewing Carter as a threat, they sent over a man by the name of Bertran Southgate to deal with him.

This story sequence is also exactly why, no matter how poorly the player performs, they can never, ever lose to Britt Carter. The Neckties will ensure that much.
9. In The Mystery of the Evening Jog case, Varlam Phillipov is said to have beaten Eli Oliverson "as his second initiation for joining the gang". Is Phillipov a member of the Neckties?

Answer: No

This case is the case in which the Spinach Berserks make their entrance into this game, as Phillipov is a member of that gang. If choosing to interrogate Phillipov, the player should specifically question if he beat up Oliverson as part of a failed drug deal. This will get Phillipov to clarify that he beat Oliverson up as part of a gang initiation.
10. In the Riddle of the Rusty Nail case, Midas Falcao stole Bill Buckler's chicken. The motivation for this is quite bizarre, as Falcao stole it because it was of a specific, apparently very rare, color. What color was Bill Buckler's special chicken?

Answer: Black

This isn't a gang case, it isn't anything related to religion or any sort of a major emotional distress of sorts. It is as simple as can be: Falcao was very jealous of Buckler's black chicken, so he broke into Buckler's chicken coop and stole it. He never clarifies on why the black coloring was special, but it must have been, because he ends up going to jail for it.
11. In The Secret of the Sole Surviving Bottle case, someone drives a pickup truck through a liquor store. The individual doing it has no identifying features, as they seemed to dress deliberately androgynously. Figuring out their gender ends up being key. Are they male or female?

Answer: Female

The reason the offender being female is important, is that it immediately identifies her as being Beatrice Savatier, a member of the Spinach Berserk gang. Savatier was under orders to do it from her gang. The gang's motivation for doing this is, simply put, alcohol is really bad for people's health. For as ridiculous as this rationale is, when interrogating Savatier, the player should really lean into this reasoning.
12. In The Mystery of the Missing Corpse case, someone steals Alan Cross' corpse from a morgue. Upon learning the identity of the thief, Michelle Munson, the motivation becomes immediately clear. Why did she steal Cross' corpse?

Answer: To give him a proper burial

Michelle Munson was Alan Cross' wife. She wanted to bury him, but she apparently hates his family, so she wanted to do it without them around. This was her straightforward motivation for breaking into the morgue to steal his corpse.
13. Niklas Barrett, member of the Spinach Berserks gang, burned down a homeless shelter. Finding him as the culprit requires the player to learn the tool he used to start the fire. What did Barrett use?

Answer: Molotov Cocktail

By first dousing the outskirts of the building with gasoline, Barrett then threw a Molotov Cocktail through a window and set the entire shed to blaze. This is the only Spinach Berserk-ordered crime that doesn't seem to have a clear benefit to the gang. Even after interrogating Barrett, it is not clear why the gang targeted homeless people specifically. Why not just offer them some spinach instead?
14. A very violent, heavily armed man, turns out to be the leader of the Spinach Berserks. Who is this man?

Answer: Edwin McPhee

McPhee would likely have kept his identity concealed, were it not for the fact that he drove a jeep into town and opened fire on a group of elderly men who were in the park. He even throws a grenade at the men when they use a picnic table as makeshift defense against his machine gun's bullets.

Why McPhee was so intent on murdering this group of elderly men never actually gets revealed, as the player never gains the chance to interrogate him.
15. The Curse of the Family Portrait is possibly the single most interesting Investigation in this entire game. The reason being, the culprit ends up being a member of the Sharpwood Police Department itself! Who killed Lionel Cripps?

Answer: Vic Duvall

Vic Duvall, the Sniper of the department, was responsible for this off-duty killing. If the player indicts him, they will lose his services for the remainder of their playthrough. Choosing to simply ignore this Investigation so Duvall can be retained is an option, and the game will never punish the player for choosing to do this.
