Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I might sound like I serve a football club, but I actually sit at one end of a busy shopping street. Which station am I?

Answer: Tottenham Court Road

Tottenham Court Road has been rebuilt multiple times, most recently as part of the construction of the Elizabeth line. Arsenal no longer serves a football ground, though it got that name because it did. Upton Park also no longer serves a football ground but did until fairly recently. Fulham Broadway serves Chelsea FC.
2. This station is part of the first section of deep level tube railway ever built, and is named for something it serves. Which station is it?

Answer: Oval

Not only is Oval one of the six original City & South London Railway stations from 1890, the turf used there came from the vicinity of the station you will decode by answering the first 10 questions. The other three stations all serve cricket grounds that have staged first class matches.
3. The only station in this quiz no longer in regular service, I sound like an instruction given at the start of a particular kind of sporting contest. What is my name?

Answer: Ongar

"En garde" is the instruction given at the start of a fencing bout. Ongar was first opened as a station in the mid 19th century but was part of London Underground for less than 50 years before its closure in 1994. Before it was closed, it was the northernmost point of the network.
4. An easy one: this is the only station to appear on both London Underground and the Paris metro. Which major public building am I?

Answer: Temple

Although Temple has never been served by other than the District and Circle lines, it used to be considered to have an interchange with Aldwych in the days when that station was still open.
5. This station is near the end of two London Underground lines and within walking distance of a terminus of a third. Where is this?

Answer: Ickenham

At one stage of its history West Ruislip was officially named West Ruislip for Ickenham - and the walk takes about 20 minutes by the way.
6. My name includes all the letters of the county town of Norfolk. Which station am I?

Answer: Northwick Park

Northwick Park (the first part of the name contains all the letters of Norwich) is a rarity on London Underground - not all trains coming through it actually stop there. It is also another with an unofficial interchange - Kenton on the Bakerloo line is less than 10 minutes walk away.
7. Part of my name links me to one of the most infamous of all English monarchs. Which station am I?

Answer: Gloucester Road

Richard III (generally blamed for the murders of 'the princes in the tower' - Edward V and his younger brother Richard) was Duke of Gloucester before snatching the throne.
8. Once upon a time bread was made here, and later a fictional consulting detective had digs here. Which is this station?

Answer: Baker Street

Baker Street has more platforms serving London Underground than any other station - four for the Metropolitan line, two for Circle and Hammersmith and City lines (the 1863 originals) and two each for the Bakerloo and Jubilee lines. It is also home to Madame Tussauds.
9. This is also one of the 1863 originals, on the opposite side of a busy road to the mainline station with which it shares part of its name. Which station is this one?

Answer: Euston Square

Euston Square is just round the corner from Warren Street (Victoria and Charing Cross branch of the Northern line). It serves University College London and University College Hospital.
10. Alight here for London Zoo. Which is this station?

Answer: Camden Town

Camden Town, the hub of the Northern line (it splits northwards from here into the Edgware and High Barnet branches and southward into the Bank and Charing Cross branches) is closer to the zoo than Regents Park even though the zoo is within the park.
11. Assemble the first letters of each answer the first 10 questions to make the name of another station, which opened in 1926, once had a name other than its current one, and has two surface level buildings. Which station is it?

Answer: Tooting Bec

Tooting Bec, one of the stations that opened in 1926 when the Northern line was extended south from Clapham Common to Morden has two surface level buildings on diagonally opposite corners of a very busy junction. Just down the road is Tooting Bec Common, from which turf was taken for The Oval cricket ground. Also here is Tooting Bec Lido, a double Olympic sized outdoor pool.
