Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I have pulled all my favorite books from the bookcase to read again. Holy cow! From the four books, all with "Red" in the title, three are by Tom Clancy. Which is the exception?

Answer: The Red Badge of Courage

"The Red Badge of Courage" (1895) by Stephen Crane was a novel about a US Civil War soldier who wanted a war wound (a red badge of courage) to atone for his previous desertion.
"The Hunt for Red October" was the debut novel by Tom Clancy in 1984 and tells a story of a rogue Soviet submarine. The book had a second rush of sales in 1990 after it was made into a successful movie starring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery.
Tom Clancy had a co-writer called Larry Bond when he wrote "Red Storm Rising" in 1986. This was a story about World War III between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
"Red Rabbit" was Mr. Clancy's 2002 novel about the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II.
2. I was halfway through a book when one of the kids asked me to join in their video game. Of course I picked the character who is ALWAYS depicted with a red shirt. Which character did I pick?

Answer: Mario

Mario is the protagonist plumber in the Nintendo "Super Mario" video games franchise. He always wears a red shirt. His brother Luigi wears green (mainly).

Sonic is Sega's mascot from "Sonic the Hedgehog". He is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with supersonic speed that battles with his nemesis Dr Robotnik AKA Eggman.

Donkey Kong, a character from the video game of the same name, does not wear a shirt but he does wear a red tie.

Link is the main character from "The Legend of Zelda", and is nearly always depicted depicted with a green tunic but is known to have worn a red one in "Ocarina of Time" and "Oracle of Seasons".
3. I picked up some comics discarded by the kids and was intrigued by the comic about the all-red superhero. Which comic did I read?

Answer: Deadpool

Deadpool, real name Wade Wilson, was an all-red superhero with a superhuman ability of accelerated healing and physical dominance over rivals. He first appeared in 1991 in Marvel Comics as as a super-villain but endeared himself to audiences with his anti-hero stance and his ability to break the fourth wall and talk to the audience directly.

Colours are important for superheroes. See how many are primary colours or combinations thereof. Arguably, the "biggest" superheroes are those portrayed in two primary colours particularly blue and red (e.g. Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and Captain America).
Red signifies boldness, energy, determination and passion while blue complements red by signifying depth, wisdom, stability, trust and confidence.
4. We were going to the movies. I drove towards the multiplex to see a retro double feature: "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972) and "The Longest Day" (1962). Before you take your coat off at the movie, which person starred in both?

Answer: Red Buttons

"The Longest Day" was a WWII drama based on the book by Cornelius Ryan's 1959 novel of the same name. While it boasted a huge ensemble cast with John Wayne, Sean Connery and Richard Burton as arguably the biggest names, Mr Buttons had a starring role as an American GI.

He also had a prominent role in "The Poseidon Adventure" where he was one of the few who escaped the overturned ship. He was born Aaron Chwatt in 1919, and perhaps best known for his Oscar winning role in "Sayonara" (1957) alongside Marlon Brando.
5. On the way to the movies my wife really wanted to see an early John Wayne film. Which movie did we go to see?

Answer: Red River

"Red River" was a John Wayne Western (1948) that told a fictional story of first cattle drive from Texas to Kansas along the Chisholm Trail. Walter Brennan and Montgomery Clift co-starred. In 2008, "Red River" was chosen by the American Film Institute as one of the greatest Westerns of all time.

"The Man With One Red Shoe" was a 1985 Tom Hanks' movie, co-starring Lori Singer which was a remake of 1972 French film "Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire" (The big blond with one black shoe) starring Pierre Richard and Mireille Darc. The American movie was a box office failure grossing less than 10 million dollars, a rarity for Mr Hanks, though it was a further eight years before "Philadelphia" was released.

"Red Dawn" was a 1984 film starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen about the invasion of the US by the Soviet Union and her allies. However the tale is localised by following a group of high school students who resist the occupation with their own form of guerrilla warfare.

Red Dragon (2002) is a horror film based on the Thomas Harris novel with the same name. Anthony Hopkins stars as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. As such it is a prequel to "The Silence of the Lambs"
6. A trailer for next week's "retro" movie was for "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, the latter playing Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding. However, that's not what he was called in Stephen King's novella. What was his name in "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption"?

Answer: He is known only as Red. His surname is not revealed

"Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" was one of four novellas within Mr King's "Different Seasons" (1982) where the theme connecting all the stories was hope. In the movie there were many actors touted for the role of Andy: Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Clint Eastwood, and Paul Newman. Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, and Kevin Costner were offered the role and passed with Cruise attending table readings of the script, but declined to work for the director Frank Darabont who had bought the movie rights for $5000 from Mr King. However only Mr Freeman was considered by for the role of Red. This was a surprise to the book fans as in the book, Red is white and Irish. This is partly acknowledged in the movie when Andy asked why he is called Red. he replies "Maybe it's because I'm Irish." (funny line)

Red Bryant was an American national League football player. Otis Redding was a noted pop/soul singer. Stu Redman was one of the main characters in another Stephen King classic, "The Stand".
7. I like it when I am the driver in the family car as driver picks the music. Tonight we're listening to a pop-rock classics station. It was a good choice. I hear Anthony Keidis starts singing "Under the Bridge". What was the red name of the band that he fronted?

Answer: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Red Hot Chili Peppers was their fifth album "Blood Sugar, Sex Magik" and was rated as one of "Rolling Stones" Top 500 Albums of all time. "Under The Bridge" was their signature song that reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

The lead singer of Maroon 5 is Adam Levine. In 2002 the group released their debut album "Songs About Jane" which peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 chart. Maroon 5 won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2005.

King Crimson, led by Greg Lake were an English progressive Rock Band formed in England in 1968.

Simply Red were an English soul band formed in 1983 by lead singer Mick Hucknall. "Holding Back the Years" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now". Both reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1985 and 1986.
8. Next song comes on: "Red red wine, you make me feel so fine / You keep me rockin' all of the time". UB40 made this a hit, but who wrote the song?

Answer: Neil Diamond

Neil Diamond wrote the song "Red, Red Wine" for his second album, "Just for You" in 1967. Mr Diamond left Bang Records in 1968 but the record company kept on issuing records, often without his permission. They added a choir to the basic track of the song and released it in 1968 where it reached number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100.

UB40 were an English reggae/pop band who formed in Birmingham in 1978. The band had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart but not as much chart fortune in the US or elsewhere, and had been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times. They made "Red Red Wine" a reggae song which topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic in 1982. It was their signature song.
9. The kids have settled in to binge watch a TV show and want me to join them. A red car is featured in the rather dated series they are watching. What TV show are they *NOT* watching?

Answer: Knight Rider

The Monkees' eponymous TV show featured the Monkeemobile, a heavily modified bright red Pontiac GTO with a white convertible roof. Tom Selleck's character, Magnum PI proved you did not have to own a Ferrari to drive a Ferrari. In the seven seasons of the show he drove three Ferrari GTS 308 models, all of them bright red. In the TV show, "Starsky and Hutch", Starkey drove a 1976 bright red Ford Gran Torino (with a white stripe). Unkindly known as the "Striped Tomato", Ford even offered the same paint job as an option if you bought this model.

Sadly out of step was KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand), the black customized 1982 Pontiac Firebird car used on "Knight Rider" The last cool car that was black was the original Batmobile. Sadly KITT never reached the lofty heights of Burt Reynolds' 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am on "Smokey and the Bandit".
10. Ah, I have the house to myself. The kids have gone to bed, my wife's fallen asleep on the couch so I get to watch what I want to on TV. I decide to stream some sport. Given my penchant for red teams (and my aversion to cold temperatures), which match will I *NOT* be watching?

Answer: NHL: Columbus vs St Louis

Team colours go a long way to establish team identity and are a source of pride and merchandising dollars. Most sporting teams are fiercely proud of their team colours which spill over into their fans who typically wear their team colours to matches. There is an unsubstantiated claim that Kansas city has the highest proportion of red cars in the States to match the red of the Kansas City Chiefs playing strip.

The Arizona Cardinals are so named because if you trace their history back to Chicago they were so named because they were given red jerseys from another team to wear in games.

In the Major league Baseball teams the Boston Red Sox and the Cincinnati Reds obviously have predominantly red playing uniforms as do the English Premier League teams Liverpool (The Reds) and Manchester United (Red Devils).

It will be a given that this author will pass on the hockey as the Columbus Blue Jackets will be playing the St Louis Blues.
