The girls have the red caravan and the boys the green one. Anne says she'll keep the caravans tidy. The children plan to camp here, as they hope the circus won't be far away.

It will take a few days to get there.

Nobby is very impressed by the caravans. Timmy has made friends with Barker and Growler, Nobby's dogs.

In the night, Dan and Lou bump into the caravans and tell the children to clear off. Julian politely tells them that will be continuing up the hill the next morning.
7. What type of trees was in the sheltered hollow, in the hills, by the lake?

Answer: Birch

The children carry on up the hills the next morning. Dan and Lou are pleased to see them go. Dan does not want Nobby to have anything to do with the cousins, but Julian tells Nobby they aren't camping far away, he can come to see them at any time. The cousins come to a farm where they get nice food, and set up camp, in the hills, near the lake.

The children see Nobby and Pongo sailing on the lake. They plan to get Nobby to signal to them when it is safe to go to the circus camp, when Lou and Dan are away.

It is a hot day and the children meet Lou and Dan as they go to bathe, leaving Timmy on guard of the caravans. The men seem surprised to see the children there, and are not pleased they are camping in the hills. Nobby comes to join the children in the lake and joins them for supper.

Nobby says that Dan isn't really his Uncle. His father and mother are dead.

His father used to be a clown with Dan, so Nobby's parents asked Dan to take care of Nobby. The children meet up with Lou and Dan. The men are quite pleasant to them, and don't seem to mind that Nobby is with them. They say that they will let the children camp where they were before, and Nobby can show them round the circus.

They are bringing some animals up into the hills and it will be too dangerous for the children to camp there. Julian politely explains that they are staying where they are; there is plenty of room in the hills for both them and the circus animals.
9. What is the name of the kind farmer's wife?

Answer: Mrs Mackie

Mrs Mackie gives the children food at a good price, and always a little extra too. The children go down to the circus campsite, Nobby waves one of Dan's shirt in the boat, to say it is all clear. They leave Timmy guarding the caravans.
10. What is the name of the elephant keeper?

Answer: Larry

The children play cricket against Old Lady, the elephant, who is very good at it. They watch the circus dogs play football too. Pongo pinches some of the picnic lunch the cousins have brought with them so Nobby puts him in his cage, but Pongo gets out and releases all the monkeys from their cages. Lucilla is the only one who can gather the monkeys up.

The children bathe with Pongo and Old Lady. Later, they go back to the caravans with Nobby, Pongo and the two dogs. Timmy is pleased to see them. There is raw meat near Timmy. Neither Timmy nor Pongo will go near it.

But Barker eats it and immediately rolls onto his side. It is obviously poisoned meat.
11. Who watches the children get on the bus?

Answer: Lou

The children believe that the poisoned meat was for Timmy and Lou and Dan put it down. Julian plans to let the men see them go off into town for the day, on the bus, but really, he will stay behind with the caravans, to see if the men turn up. Nobby and Pongo warns them not to come near the circus camp by waving a red jersey. Julian feels that there is something in the hills that makes Lou and Dan come there so often.

They search for it but with no luck. The children pass the circus camp and yell to Nobby (in Dan's hearing) that they are going to town for the day.

The elephant owner says that Barker is still very ill. All the children and Timmy get on the bus; they see Lou, watching them. But Julian gets off at the next stop and return to the caravans.

He lies on the roof of a caravan, keeping watch for the men. Lou and Dan come later. For some reason they go underneath the caravan, where Julian is on top of, and start moving it.The men move the caravan only a little way. Then, the Julian's amazement, the men completely disappear. Julian falls asleep in his hiding place and awakes to find the men pushing the caravan back to its original spot.

The men fall asleep on the rocky ledge. Julian sees Pongo and Nobby hiding nearby. It is clear that Nobby has had some beatings from Dan and Lou. Nobby is delighted to see Julian and comes nearer. Unfortunately he falls onto the two sleeping men. They think Nobby has been spying on them and start beating Nobby. Pongo saves Nobby by biting the men.
12. Who goes down the hole, underneath the caravan, first?

Answer: Pongo

The others come back with Timmy and hear everything what has happened. Nobby is too frightened to return to the camp so Julian says he and Pongo can stay with them. They go exploring, and move the caravans out of the way. Beneath the caravan where Julian was lying on top of is heather.

But under the heather is boards, covering a deep hole, which leads into the hills, with footholds. Pongo goes down the hole; Nobby and Julian have to go after him. The hole leads underground, with lots of caves. There is one in particular that would be perfect for Dan and Lou to hide stolen goods.

The two boys go back to the others, with Pongo. They plan to go back underground the next day. The next day the children go into the cave. The children find a hole in the roof of one of the caves, with leads into a massive cave.

They find sacks and boxes there, which are full of gold and silver plates and cups, china and jewellery. Dan and Lou must have stolen them over the years and hidden them in this cave. A stream runs through the hills. But, when the children turn back, to go back to the caravans, they find that someone has replaced the boards, and probably moved the caravans back into place.

They can't get out

They see that the caravans have been moved and know that the children have found their secret. Dan throws a stone at Pongo making him unconscious, the men plan to get the stolen goods that night and then leave the circus.

They plan to leave the children prisoners underground. Meanwhile the children try to escape by wading through the underground stream, but it is too deep. Pongo manages to find his way down the secret tunnel, to the children. Dick has the idea of sending Pongo back to the circus with a note, asking to be rescued. Later, Lou comes to the children, he threatens to shoot Timmy.

The men collect the stolen goods, Dan puts them in his wagon while Lou guards the children. Then Dan calls out that he is being attacked.
14. Who has the idea to hide upstream?

Answer: Anne

While Pongo is attacking Dan, Dick manages to escape through the tunnel. He replaces the boards over the hole and roll stones over it, so that the men are prisoners also. The children try to hide but Lou and Dan catch George and Julian. George pretends she is a boy, so that the men don't know that Dick has escaped. Pongo has returned to Nobby, he has not taken the note to Larry.
15. What was Lou's surname?

Answer: Allburg

Just as the men are about to hurt Julian and George, Dick turns up with the police. Dick went to the Mackie's farm to alert the police and took them down the tunnel. The police arrest Lou and Dan. The burglaries have been puzzling the police for over four years. Lou and Dan are with the police.

The next morning, the Inspector comes to the caravans to discuss the case with the children.
