Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When making spaghetti for dinner, you bring a large pot of water to a boil. What are you most likely to add to the water before putting in the dry pasta?

Answer: salt and oil

Pasta cooked in salted water tastes much better. The oil helps prevent the individual pieces of pasta from sticking to one another.
2. You are making pancakes for breakfast. Which kitchen tool will you use to turn them over in the pan?

Answer: spatula

There are all sorts of spatulas made for kitchen use. Ones with metal blades may be used on cast iron or steel pans; only plastic or wood ones should be used on non-stick pans.
3. Yogurt or yoghurt or yoghourt (it is spelled different ways in different places) is primarily made from what?

Answer: milk

Special bacteria called a culture are added to ferment the milk, thicken it and add the special tang you can taste in yogurt. People have been making yogurt for well over 2000 years.
4. Eggs can be cooked in many ways. Which egg dish are you cooking if you whip eggs with a little milk before putting them in the pan, then mix them up several times while cooking them?

Answer: scrambled eggs

Scrambled eggs can be made differently by adding crumbled crisp bacon, small cubes of ham, diced sausages, onion, cheese, peppers, or smoked salmon. In India, green chili, chopped ginger, chopped tomatoes and turmeric are added to scrambled eggs to produce a dish called bhurjee.
5. Hot oatmeal makes an excellent breakfast. To what do you add the dry oatmeal to cook it on the stove?

Answer: water

Hot oatmeal is also known as porridge, oatmeal cereal and stirabout.
6. Which tiny fish, often preserved in salt and oil, adds a kick of flavour to Caesar salad dressing, pizza sauce, chickpea salad and many other dishes?

Answer: anchovies

Some people dislike the strong taste of preserved anchovies but that strong taste disappears when they are used in small quantities to flavour another dish. Some people are surprised to learn, for example, that there are anchovies in Worcestershire sauce.
7. Stirring the ingredients for cookies together in a bowl can be lot of work. Which kitchen appliance makes this job easier?

Answer: stand mixer

Cookie dough can be thick and heavy. It is often too big a job for a hand-held mixer; better leave the big jobs to the stand mixer.
8. Much shorter than a chef's knife, what is the knife with a three-inch blade used for small cutting jobs?

Answer: a paring knife

A paring knife is the other all-purpose knife in a chef's kit, along with the chef's knife. It has hundreds of uses and comes in lengths from about 2-1/2 to about 4 inches long. Knives can be very dangerous - always make sure an adult is present if you need to use one.
9. Before baking your cookies, you spread a sheet of parchment paper on the cookie sheet. What does this do?

Answer: Keeps them from sticking to the cookie sheet

Parchment paper is specially made and treated to resist heat and to release whatever is cooked on it without sticking. It is also knows as bakery paper, baking paper and bakery release paper.
10. Ketchup makes lots of things taste better: French fries, meatloaf, eggs, other stuff. What is the principal ingredient in ketchup?

Answer: tomatoes

Ketchup (which is also called catsup or tomato sauce) is made of ripe tomatoes, vinegar, sugar (or another sweetener) salt and various herbs and spices. Sometimes it is used by itself as a condiment; other times it is the basis for another sauce, such as thousand island salad dressing.
