Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this cartoon picture of the Earth, what are the blue parts called?

Answer: Ocean

The blue parts of this picture are the ocean. In the picture, we see the Atlantic ocean. The green parts to the left of the ocean are North America and South America and the green land areas to the right are Europe and Africa. Most of the Earth's surface is covered by water!
2. Which cardinal direction is usually pointing up at the top of the Compass Rose?

Answer: North

North is traditionally pointing up on most maps. The Compass Rose makes it easier to read a map. There are four cardinal directions. North is at the top, South at the bottom, East to the right, and West to the left. Did you know that the Earth is like a giant magnet? That's why the red needle on a compass always points north - up to the North Pole!
3. What name is given to the original Americans?

Answer: Native Americans

The Native Americans lived in North America long before Europeans first arrived. There were originally hundreds of different Native American tribes, but many died out as more Europeans settled in America. Native American tribes often had a deep respect for nature. Many were also matriarchal societies, which means the mothers were the heads of the family.
4. Who was the first president of the United States?

Answer: George Washington

George Washington was the first president of the United States. He was also the general of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Winning the war freed the European colonists to form the United States. George Washington was known to be honest and of high integrity. Integrity is doing the right thing even when it is hard. Washington was unanimously elected the first President of the United States. Unanimously means everyone voted for Washington.
5. Which US city would you visit to see the Statue of Liberty?

Answer: New York City

The Statue of Liberty stands in New York Harbour. She is also known as Lady Liberty and stands about 300 feet tall. The Statue of Liberty is made out of copper, which is the same metal used to make a penny coin! She was given as a gift to celebrate the friendship between France and the United States. For many years the Statue of Liberty was the first sight of America a new immigrant to the US would see.
6. Why are there 50 stars on the US flag?

Answer: For the 50 US states

The US flag has one star for each state. If the US adds another state in the future another star would be added! The flag also has 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes for a total of 13 stripes. These stripes represent the 13 original colonies. Every country in the world has its own flag which is special to its people. It is important to always treat all flags with respect.
7. The people of the United States pick their president by voting. How do Americans vote?

Answer: By casting a ballot

The citizens of the United States cast ballots for who they want to be president. Each American who is registered to vote is given exactly one vote. All the votes for a state are added up and the person with the most votes wins the state. The state sends representatives to vote for their state's winner at a special meeting called the Electoral College. The person with the most electoral college votes becomes the next president of the United States.
8. Where does the President of the United States live?

Answer: The White House

The President lives and works at the White House in Washington, DC. The White House has been the official home of the President since the second US President, John Adams. Many changes have been made to the White House over the years including adding a bowling alley and a movie theater! The President works in the Oval Office which is a huge round room in the West Wing of the White House.
9. United States laws are made at the Capitol by the Senate and which other group of people?

Answer: The House of Representatives

The House of Representatives is a group people elected by each US state to come up with laws that are fair for the country. States with more people have a larger number of representatives in the House. However, the Senate has exactly two people for each state. For a bill to become a law it has to be approved by both parts of Congress - the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Then the president can sign the bill making it law, or the president may veto the bill which means it is not law. In rare cases, Congress can override the president's veto by having two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate voting for the bill.
10. Who decides if a law has been broken in the United States?

Answer: A judge

In the United States, a judge decides if a law has been broken. When a person believes a law has been broken they can go to a judge and ask the judge to decide who is right or wrong. The judge is supposed to be as fair as possible in deciding who is following the laws correctly. Judges then use the laws to decide if any punishment is needed. If a person does not agree with the judge they can ask a more powerful court to decide on the case. The most powerful court in America is called the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court can decide if a law should be removed and no longer followed.
