Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you cut me open, my cross-sections look like a star. What am I?

Answer: Okra

Okra is a small green vegetable. When you cut them into slices, their cross-section looks like the shape of a star. They are also called bhindi or lady's fingers. They originally came from Africa, but nowadays are used in Indian and Caribbean cooking.
2. I am an ornamental vegetable and people use my shell to make musical instruments such as maracas. What am I?

Answer: Gourd

Squash, marrow and gourds are technically fruit, but many people consider them vegetables because they use them in savoury cooking. Some gourds are edible, but the majority with their hard shells are used for ornaments. People make them into musical instruments, bird feeders and vases.
3. My name is yuca and I am a root vegetable. What other name am I known by?

Answer: Cassava

Yuca or cassava is a shrub which comes from South America. The stem and leaves grow above ground. It is the thick root, or tuber, which grows below ground that is used in cooking. Tapioca is the starch obtained from the root and is usually turned into flour for baking bread, or making into cakes, puddings and soups.
4. I belong to the broccoli family and my name sounds like a person who lives in Italy. What am I?

Answer: Romanesco

Romanesco broccoli is a pretty green colour. It resembles a cauliflower and is cooked in exactly the same way as broccoli or cauliflower. It was first grown in Italy during the 16th century, hence its Italian sounding name, as Rome is the capital of Italy.
5. My common name is New Zealand yam, but I am known by what other name?

Answer: Oca

The oca, or New Zealand yam, is a root vegetable used as an alternative to potato. They originally came from South America. They come in all sorts of different colours including yellow, red, orange and pink.
6. My name is taken from the German word "kohl" for cabbage and "rube" for turnip. What am I?

Answer: Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi belongs to the cabbage family. The large bulb can either be eaten raw or cooked. When it is raw, it tastes crunchy and slightly peppery. When it is cooked, it tastes like broccoli.
7. I am the pads taken from prickly pear cactus and eaten as a vegetable. What am I?

Answer: Nopales

The large prickly pear cactus is mainly grown in Mexico. Each cactus has a number of flat discs called pads or paddles, and it us these which have sharp spines. When the pads are removed, the spines are scraped off and the skin removed. The nopales are then sliced or diced and added to stews, or left whole and deep fried in batter.
8. I am a knobbly, odd-shaped root vegetable that can be made into soups and sauces. What am I?

Answer: Celeriac

Celeriac has a very mild nutty flavour and tastes a little like celery but not as strong. It can be eaten raw, but most people cook it like mashed potato. It looks like a turnip, and grows underground like other root vegetables.
9. I can be found growing near the sea which is why I taste slightly of salty water. What am I?

Answer: Samphire

Samphire is pronounced "sam-fire". The thin green shoots grow by the edge of salt water estuaries and this gives it a slightly salty flavour. It can be eaten raw with salads or cooked to accompany fish dishes.
10. I am a weird vegetable with a name which sounds like a musical instrument and a part of the human body. What am I?

Answer: Fiddlehead

The fiddlehead is the edible part of certain ferns and has a distinctive curly head called a scroll. The vegetable is very healthy as it contains omega-3. People who have eaten them say they taste similar to asparagus and spinach.
