Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My grandfather was born in 1896 in Bukovina. What empire ruled Bukovina in that time?

Answer: Austro-Hungarian empire

This was also the decade that Ukrainian immigration to Canada began, in 1891 to be exact.
2. Which is the main river in Ukraine? Hint: It's the third largest river in Europe.

Answer: Dnieper

From its source in the Valdai Upland in Russia until it empties into the Black Sea the Dnieper is over 2,200 km long.
3. My grandparents had six children. They lost their eldest daughter in a pandemic. What disease swept the world in 1918/19?

Answer: Influenza

The estimated numbers of dead from the "Spanish flu" vary wildly, from twenty million to seventy million world wide. There is general agreement though that more people died from the influenza pandemic than during WWI.
4. My grandfather was a logger and later a farmer. Had he been a seaman, he could have been on the crew of this famous rum runner vessel that was sunk by the US coast guard in 1929.

Answer: I'm Alone

There was a great deal of controversy over this incident since the "I'm Alone" was sunk in international waters and one sailor who drowned was a French citizen. The US government paid compensation to the schooner's crew in 1935, two years after Prohibition ended.
5. During the 1930s my grandfather went to California as a logger. What important act that set some minimal labour standards was passed in the US in 1938?

Answer: The Wages and Hours Act

This act banned child labor, set the minimum wage at $0.25 per hour and the standard work week at forty four hours.
6. During WWII my grandfather's eldest son tried to enlist in the Canadian army but was rejected for health reasons. Approximately how many Ukrainian Canadians fought for Canada during WWII?

Answer: 35,000

Sadly, also during WWII 5,000 Ukrainian Canadians were interred as "enemy aliens", together with thousands of Japanese-Canadians and German-Canadians, a dark chapter in our history.
7. During the 1950s, my grandfather owned and operated a mushroom farm in British Columbia. Mushrooms are still an important crop in B.C. About how much of Canada's mushroom production takes place in B.C.?

Answer: 25%

Over 90% of mushrooms eaten in British Columbia are grown right here.
8. My grandfather was a life-long member of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians (AUUC). In 1964 the association celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of which famous Ukrainian poet?

Answer: Taras Shevchenko

Here is an example of his poetry; I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

DON'T WED:

Don't wed a wealthy woman, friend,/
She'll drive you from the house./
Don't wed a poor one either, friend,/
Dull care will be your spouse./
Get hitched to carefree Cossack life/
And share a Cossack fate:/
If it be rags, let it be rags --/
What comes, that's what you take./
Then you'll have nobody to nag/
Or try to cheer you up,/
To fuss and fret and question you/
What ails you and what's up./
When two misfortune share, they say,/
It's easier to weep./
Not so: it's easier to cry/
When no-one's there to see.

Mirhorod, October 4th, 1845.

Pierre Eliot Trudeau was prime minister from 1969 to 1979, and again from 1980 to 1984. His legacy includes the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and patriating the Canadian Constitution.
