Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Spanish painter from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century first produced a work entitled "The Nude Maja", then followed it up with a painting entitled "The Clothed Maja"?

Answer: Francisco Goya

Francisco Goya (1746-1827), is perhaps best known for his disturbing depictions of war and deprivation during the Napoleonic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Art historians regard "The Nude Maja" as one of the first depictions of the female nude that was not associated with a historical event, legend or myth.

While it is unknown whether or not Goya intended for the paintings to be hung together, they can be seen today at Madrid's El Prado museum where they hang side by side.
2. Which future Hollywood star and inventor appeared nude in two scenes of the 1933 Czech film "Extase"?

Answer: Hedy Lamarr

Before she emigrated to the United States, Hedy's husband spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in a futile attempt to buy up all copies of his wife's notorious screen debut. Once in the United States, the now single Lamarr talked her way into a contract with MGM and played opposite megastars of the late thirties and early forties such as Charles Boyer, Clark Gable, and Jimmy Stewart.

Her other significant accomplishments included raising millions in war bonds, presiding over her own film production company, and designing frequency hopping torpedo guidance systems intended to prevent Nazi warships from disabling Allied torpedoes.
3. Robert John Burck can often be seen in New York City's Times Square playing his guitar clad only in footwear, a hat and white briefs. By what moniker is he better known?

Answer: Naked Cowboy

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Burk has been busking in Times Square since 1999 wearing only a cowboy hat, boots, and briefs. Armed with a degree in political science, this self-proclaimed ultra conservative ran briefly for Mayor of New York City in 2009 and in 2010 announced he would challenge Barak Obama for the Presidency of the United States as a Tea Party candidate. Burk was arrested in March of 2021 for panhandling in Daytona Beach, Florida.
4. In 1974, a novelty country song called "The Streak" topped the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. Who wrote and performed this hit that celebrated a famous fad of the 1970s?

Answer: Ray Stevens

Georgia born Ray Stevens is perhaps best known for his 1970 hit "Everything is Beautiful" which garnered two Grammy Awards in 1971. "The Streak" was not Stevens' first attempt at comedic songwriting, having released "Gitarzan" in 1969. Stevens was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2019.
5. What theatrical form was used by British promoter Laura Henderson during World War II to showcase nude women on the stage of her Windmill Theater?

Answer: Tableau vivant

The unflappable Mrs. Henderson and her business partner Vivian van Damm exploited a legal loophole concerning nudity in statues to present completely nude women in a tableau vivant or "living picture". So long as the performers stood perfectly still, their nudity was not in violation of British law that protected nude statues from moralist objections. Tableau vivant was a popular form of entertainment amongst European royalty in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, often being performed at coronation, royal weddings and other regal social events. Dame Judi Dench portrayed Mrs.

Henderson in the 2005 Stephen Frears film "Mrs. Henderson Presents".
6. Which pair of musical performers were involved in the Super Bowl half-time show incident that gave birth to the terms "Nipplegate" and "wardrobe malfunction"

Answer: Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake

During the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show in 2004, Janet Jackson's breast was exposed for less than a second when Justin Timberlake tore part of her costume. The fact that she was wearing a nipple shield led many to speculate that the whole affair was a stunt made to look like an accident. MTV, which produced the half-time show, was banned from participating in any future Super Bowls, and parent company CBS was eventually fined $550,000 by the Federal Communications Commission.
7. According to legend, in which city did Lady Godiva ride nude through the streets?

Answer: Coventry

Supposedly, Lady Godiva rode nude through the streets of Coventry after her husband, Leofric, the Earl of Mercia, told her he would lower the harsh taxes he imposed on his tenants if she rode through town nude on horseback. The clever Godiva took him up on the challenge and flexed her political muscle by issuing a proclamation that all citizens were to stay indoors and shutter their windows, so as to allow her to ride unseen. Unfortunately for Tom, the local tailor, the temptation was too much.

He will forever be remembered as Peeping Tom.
8. Playboy Magazine was widely known for its nude centerfolds and risque humor. What two other regular features in the magazine gave it an air of respectability that was lacking in most competing men's periodicals?

Answer: The Playboy Interview and fiction by celebrated authors

Albert Schweitzer, Ayn Rand, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Germaine Greer, Fidel Castro and Grace Kelly were amongst the hundreds on noteworthy people interviewed for the monthly Playboy Interview. Amongst the authors whose short stories the magazine published were Ian Fleming, Arthur C. Clarke, Ursula K. LeGuin, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Margaret Atwood, and Roald Dahl.

Some people really did read Playboy for the articles!
9. In which "weird" West Coast (USA) city did a major art museum open its doors for one day to nude museum goers in 2013?

Answer: Portland, Oregon

In association with a World Naked Bike Ride event, The Portland Art Museum allowed nude patrons in for a bicycle design exhibit entitled "Cyclepedia". Always just a bit off key, Portland's unofficial motto is "Keep Portland Weird", a slogan which can be seen painted and plastered all over the city.
10. "The Full Monty" is a heartwarmingly funny film about six unemployed men who decide to make money by staging an all-male nude revue. In which English city does this story take place?

Answer: Sheffield

Four of the characters in "The Full Monty" were former steel workers, an industry for which Sheffield was internationally renowned. In 1912, Harry Brearley, a Sheffield born metallurgist, created a "non-rusting" steel, better known today as stainless steel.

Increased competition from foreign steel, and the rise of automation were responsible for the slow but inexorable decline of the Sheffield steel industry in last quarter of the twentieth century.
