Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a legend and a Wagner Opera. I sail the seas of Cape Horn under Captain Vandemeer. Seeing me is considered very bad luck.

Answer: Flying Dutchman

Legend says the captain of the Flying Dutchman was cursed to sail the oceans for ever when he swore to round Cape Hope if it took until the Day of Judgement. Scholars suggest that the Flying Dutchman may have been the mirage of another vessel far away, called the Fata Morgana.
2. This abandoned vessel was found off the Azores in 1872 in good shape. No crew on board, and no clues to what happened.

Answer: Mary Celeste

The ultimate ghost ship by which others are judged. The Mary Celeste was carrying a cargo of alcohol that was leaking and could have caused an explosion; causing the crew to "stand off" in a lifeboat and later return. The other vessels are fictional. The "African Queen" and "Mare Galante" are from the pen of C. S. Forester. The Mary Deare is from a good tale by Hammond Innes.
3. I was real but rumored to be haunted. Old sailors told of a riveter said to have died between my twin hulls. In storms, an eerie banging was heard coming from deep inside, a true "Tommyknocker."

Answer: Great Eastern

The tale of the Great Eastern Tommyknocker is a myth. The Great Eastern had access ports between the hulls and many did not even have a hatch (door) until later. No skeleton was found when she was broken up years later. However, ships have many objects that go "bump in the night."
4. A ghost ship with "Death" and "Nightmare Life-in-death" on board meets a sailor with an albatross around his neck. Who wrote of this spectral encounter in "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner?"

Answer: Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Even today, it is considered bad luck to kill an albatross for they are the souls of lost sailors. Still, when confronted by starvation in an open lifeboat it's either the Cabin Boy or a bird.
5. In 1931, the steamship "Baychimo" was lost off Point Barrow Alaska and was seen off and on for the next 40 years. What was the name of the famous Arctic trading company that owned her?

Answer: Hudson's Bay Company

Established in 1670, it is one of the longest lasting corporations in the world. Very nice blankets too!
6. According to legend, the "Octavia" sailed through this often ice-bound passage. Unfortunately all the crew and passengers were found frozen to death so it didn't count for the record books.

Answer: Northwest Passage

Today the Northwest Passage is transited often and may soon be a more viable trade route. It was successfully transited for the first time just over a hundred years ago. Today, much of it is ice-free in the summer months.
7. This fictional ship was named for the Greek Goddess of the harvest. Found off Whitby England with the dead captain lashed to the wheel, she transported Count Dracula from Transylvania to England.

Answer: Demeter

A large dog was seen to jump ashore. Guess who that was?
The Acheron is from "Master and Commander." The Disco Volante from one of the best James Bond films ("Thunderball") and the Ergenstrasse is from the classic John Wayne film "The Sea Chase."
8. Known as the "Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes," this steamer with a name like a Scottish victory, disappeared on a snowy Lake Superior night in 1902.

Answer: Bannockburn

The Great Lakes have their fair share of tales of loss and disaster. From the Eastland to the Noronic to the Edmund Fitzgerald. The battles of Culloden and Flodden weren't exactly Scottish victories. Bosworth Field was famous for Richard III having a bad day.
9. The "most haunted ship in the US Navy" is berthed in Alameda, California. Over the course of her commission, over 300 airman and sailors died while serving on board. A namesake vessel launched the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in 1942.

Answer: USS Hornet

Warships are dangerous places, and there are areas below deck that are indeed a little odd. Worth a visit if you're in the San Francisco Bay area.
10. A Hollywood legend. We first meet this ship with a ghostly crew and an undead monkey searching for pirated Aztec gold.

Answer: The Black Pearl

All ship names are from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, and who can forget Captain Jack Sparrow making a gift of an "undead monkey!"
