Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which 1967 film does Louis Prima voice a character who claims to the "King of the Swingers"?

Answer: The Jungle Book

Louis Prima was the voice of King Louie, the orangutan who wanted Mowgli to give him the secret of fire so that he could be "like you". Prima was a trumpeter and bandleader whose career dated back to the 1920s.
2. Which song, recorded originally by Bing Crosby in 1944 and revived by Big Dee Irwin and Little Eva in 1963, warns that "if you hate to go to school, you may grow up to be a mule"?

Answer: Swinging on a Star

Another verse of the song maintains that "if you don't give a feather or a fig, you may grow up to be a pig". Written by Jimmy van Heusen and Johnny Burke, the song was written for the film "Going My Way" and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
3. In 2001, which former boy band member released an album of songs from the big band era called "Swing While You're Winning"?

Answer: Robbie Williams

Originally famous as a member of Take That, Robbie Williams left to follow a solo career in 1995. "Swing While You're Winning", his fourth album, went straight to number one in the UK album charts and sold six million copies in Europe alone. Among the titles featured are "Mack the Knife", "Straighten up and Fly Right", "One for my Baby" and a duet with Frank Sinatra on "It Was a Very Good Year".
4. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers starred in the 1936 film "Swing Time". Which song from the film won the Academy Award for Best Song?

Answer: The Way You Look Tonight

All of these songs featured in the film and were written by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields but "The Way You Look Tonight" lifted the Oscar. The film also contained a tribute to Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. If you haven't seen it and enjoy some romance, fine music and great dancing this is a film not to miss.
5. The spiritual song, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", has been adopted by the supporters of which sporting team as their theme song?

Answer: England rugby union team

A song dating back to the early twentieth century which refers to the assumption into heaven of the prophet Elijah, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" became a theme of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s and was performed by Joan Baez at Woodstock in 1969.

During that decade it also became associated with rugby union clubs. It was first sung by supporters of the English national team in 1988 and quickly became popular. It has featured in a number of recordings associated with rugby World Cup tournaments and when the English team won the trophy in 2003 in Australia British Airways named the aircraft which brought them home "Sweet Chariot".
6. "Songs for Swingin' Lovers!" topped the first British album charts in 1956. Which singer recorded this album?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

One of Sinatra's most popular albums, the arrangements to the mostly well known standards were by Nelson Riddle. Among the outstanding songs were two written by Cole Porter: "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Anything Goes".
7. The jazz group "The Swingle Singers", formed in France in 1962, became famous for their interpretations of the music of which classical composer?

Answer: Bach

The album "Jazz Sebastian Bach" which appeared in 1964 won a Grammy Award as did the group, which was named as "Best New Artist". In later years they recorded jazz arrangements of music by other great composers including an album of Mozart. One of the members of the group was Christiane Legrand, the sister of the composer and pianist Michel Legrand.
8. Which band proclaimed themselves to be "Sultans of Swing" in 1978?

Answer: Dire Straits

Written by lead singer Mark Knopfler, "Sultans of Swing" was taken from the group's debut album, simply called "Dire Straits", for release as a single. Though not a hit on its original release, the single was re-released in 1979 and reached the top ten both in the USA and in the UK.

Mark Knopfler is one of the most talented guitarists in the business with a distinctive finger picking style. He is also an innovative and often satirical songwriter, exemplified in "Money For Nothing" (1985) from the wonderful "Brothers in Arms" album.
9. During the Swinging Sixties, which street in the Soho area of London became famous as a trend-setting centre of fashion?

Answer: Carnaby Street

In the late 1960s, Carnaby Street became world famous as the centre of youth fashion. It hosted many boutiques (a word that became fashionable at the time), most famously that of Mary Quant. The surrounding area became a centre for music with some of the leading bands such as the Small Faces and the Rolling Stones appearing at clubs in the area.
10. What pseudonym was adopted in 1830-1831 by protesting agricultural labourers in England as a signature on letters threatening landlords with violence against themselves and their property?

Answer: Captain Swing

The labourers, already suffering under the effects of agricultural change, felt that the introduction of threshing machines to mechanise one of the last labouring tasks threatened them with unemployment and destitution.

During the autumn of 1830 and the following winter, risings occurred across the southern counties of England in particular. Like the Luddites in the textile factories a couple of decades earlier, their protests included machine breaking as well as arson against property, especially hayricks.

The riots were put down brutally, with 19 men being hanged and over 500 transported to Australia. The property of the rich was clearly felt to be more valuable than the lives of the poor.
