No Way, Jose! Trivia Quiz

When people see "all of these" as an answer, their instinct is usually to always choose it. Upon learning it's incorrect, they might say "No way, Jose!" All questions in this quiz have "all of these" as a choice, but it's rarely the right answer.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following terms is associated with golf?

Answer: all of these

A birdie, eagle, and albatross are all golf terms that relate to how well a golfer does on one of the golf holes in relation to the par. A birdie is one stroke under par. An eagle is two strokes under par. An albatross, also called a double eagle, is three strokes under par. Additionally, a bogey is one stroke over par.
2. Of these three minerals, which one is the softest on the Mohs scale of hardness?

Answer: talc

Talc is the softest of the three minerals. Quartz is the second softest, and diamond is the third softest. In fact, talc is not only the softest of these three minerals, it is the softest of all minerals on the Mohs scale of hardness. On the scale, talc has a hardness of 1, quartz has a hardness of 7, and diamond has a hardness of 10. Although talc is the softest mineral, there are other substances softer than talc-elements such as sodium and potassium, for example.

The Mohs scale is based on the ability of a mineral to scratch another mineral. If a mineral is higher up on the scale, then it can scratch minerals lower on the scale. Therefore, quartz can scratch talc but not diamond.
Talc is used in places such as ceramics, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. Talc also has a high resistance to heat and acid; therefore, it is used in lab countertops.
3. Which branch of the United States government has the ability to declare war?

Answer: legislative

Article I of the United States Constitution states that, among other things, Congress (the legislative branch) has the ability to declare war. However, the president (executive branch) does have the ability to request a declaration for war. Not all wars have been officially declared.

For example, Congress never officially declared war when the United States took part in the Vietnam War. The first five declared wars include the War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. All five of these wars were declared at the request of the president.
4. Which science fiction television show has time travel as its main concept?

Answer: Doctor Who

Although all three shows have had at least one episode involving time travel, only "Doctor Who" has it as a main concept. "Doctor Who" is about an alien known as the Doctor who travels through time and space in a time machine called the TARDIS (which stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space).

The classic series ran for 26 seasons before it was cancelled due to low ratings. In 2005, a new series, which was a continuation of the classic series, began airing.
5. Which board game is played with a spinner?

Answer: The Game of Life

In "The Game of Life", a spinner, numbered one through ten, is used to determine how many spaces a player can move their token, a car. In some versions of the game, spinning a ten is considered speeding and money must be paid. In the game, players must use the spinner and then follow the instructions on the space in which they land (although some spaces are optional).

"Sorry!" uses cards to determine the number of spaces a player moves forwards or backwards.

Playing pieces in "Stratego" can only move one space (but not diagonally), except for scouts which can move any number of spaces in a straight line.
Additionally, each of these games ends in a different way. In "The Game of Life", whoever has the most money wins (although in some versions, there may be alternate ways of winning). In "Sorry!", the player who moves all four of the pieces into the home spot wins. In "Stratego", whoever captures their opponent's flag first wins.
6. When does a solar eclipse occur?

Answer: new moon

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon is between Earth and the sun. When this happens, the sun is blocked and little light can be passed to Earth. If the moon is completely in line with the sun and Earth, then a total solar eclipse happens; otherwise, only part of the sun's light is blocked.

This can only occur during a new moon. This is because solar eclipses only occur when the sun and the moon are in conjunction when seen from Earth. The only time that happens is during a new moon.
7. On which of these days will a United States postman deliver the mail?

Answer: Valentine's Day

Mail is not delivered on federal holidays. There are ten of these holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Mail is delivered on all other days, such as Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Halloween. Mail is also not delivered on Sundays, regardless of event. If a federal holiday falls on a Sunday, then mail is not delivered on the following Monday.
8. In a game of poker, suppose a player has all cards of the same suit. What kind of hand is it possible for that person to have?

Answer: royal flush

A royal flush consists of a ten, jack, queen, king, and ace of the same suit. It is the highest hand a player can achieve in the game. A flush, straight flush, and a royal flush are the only hands achievable with five cards of the same suit. For a full house, a two-of-a-kind and a three-of-a-kind must occur.

It is impossible to get a two-of-a-kind or a three-of-a-kind if all cards are the same suit.
9. Which of these structures is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world?

Answer: Colossus of Rhodes

The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of Helios, one of the Greek Titans. At approximately 100 feet, it was one the tallest statues at the time. It was constructed to celebrate the victory of Rhodes over Cyprus when Cyprus tried to seize Rhodes. In 226B.C., it was destroyed by an earthquake. The earthquake caused the Colossus of Rhodes to snap at the knees and break. There was consideration to rebuild it, but a message from an oracle (the oracle of Delphi) had them convinced that they had offended Helios and refused to rebuild the statue. At 56 years, it was the shortest-lived wonder of the ancient world prior to its destruction.

In 654A.D., Arabs took what was left of the statue and sold it to a merchant, although it is possible that all traces of the statue had disappeared long before that.

The other six wonders of the ancient world are the Great Pyramid at Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Lighthouse of Alexandria, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Temple of Artemis, and Statue of Zeus.
10. In math, which object is a two-dimensional shape?

Answer: trapezoid

A two-dimensional shape has length and height-as the name implies, only two dimensions. Trapezoids, circles, and squares are example of two-dimensional shapes. A three-dimensional shape also includes depth. Cubes, cylinders, and spheres are examples of three-dimensional shapes.

When drawing a shape, even a 3-d shape, the object is two dimensional, since it is impossible to draw depth. Surface area and volumes are two examples of quantities that can be found for 3-d shapes but not for 2-d shapes, since both require the object having depth.
