Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals. On which continent are you most likely to find sugar gliders in the wild?

Answer: Australia

Sugar gliders are a small tree-dwelling marsupial species (Petaurus breviceps) related to the opposum. Although omnivorous, sugar gliders have a preference for sugary foods such as sap and nectar. Not able to truly fly, sugar gliders are able to glide using their patagia, membranes that extend from their front limbs to their rear limbs.

The natural habitat of sugar gliders is northern and eastern Australia and New Guinea.
2. Brain Teasers. See if you can identify this "sweet" word without its vowels: SCCHRN.

Answer: Saccharin

Saccharin has the chemical formula C7H503S. An artificial sweetener, saccharin is far sweeter than sucrose but has a bitter, metallic aftertaste. Developed in the later 1800s, saccharin began seeing widespread use during periods of sugar shortages during World War One.

It is believed that consumption of saccharin may lead to increased risks of bladder cancer. Saccharine is an adjective that means excessively sweet or sentimental.
3. Celebrities. Which actor may be as well known for the commercial catch phrase "Check your blood sugar! Check it often!" as his roles in various motion pictures and television programs?

Answer: Wilford Brimley

Wilford Brimley (born 1934) is an actor who has appeared in television series and motion pictures such as "The China Syndrome" (1979) and "Cocoon" (1985). He was diagnosed with type 2 or adult onset diabetes in 1979. He frequently appears on US television commercials for Liberty Medical, a mail order company that offers diabetes testing supplies and related materials (when he reminds viewers to check their blood sugar--part of the self treatment for diabetes), and the Quaker Oats Company.

He was honored in 2008 by the American Diabetes Association for his efforts to spread awareness of diabetes.
4. Entertainment. In which east coast city--home of the Tasty Baking Company--would you find the SugarHouse Casino?

Answer: Philadelphia, PA

The location of the casino, along the Delaware River, was formerly the site of the Jack Frost Sugar Refinery. Opening in 2010, the casino contains over 3,000 slot machines and gaming tables. The casino also hosts several dining options and has frequent guest entertainers. The Tasty Baking Company produces the Tastykake line of snack foods.
5. For Children. In the Disney song "A Spoonful of Sugar", what does a spoonful of sugar do?

Answer: Helps the medicine go down

"A Spoonful of Sugar" was written by Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman for the 1964 Disney movie musical "Mary Poppins". In the movie, it is sung by Julie Andrews who plays the title role. Robert Sherman came up with the idea for the song after one of his children received the polio vaccine on a sugar cube.

"A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down/ The medicine go down-wown/ The medicine go down/ Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down/ In a most delightful way"
6. General. What major change occurred to the iconic Hershey chocolate bar in 1969?

Answer: The price of the bar doubled.

The five cent Hershey chocolate bar was introduced and became a staple of candy shops and supermarket checkout lines. The five cent cost was advertised on the wrapper itself, but as the decades rolled on and inflation occurred, the company could only make a profit with a five cent price on a smaller bar. By 1969, the five cent Hershey bar weighed about nine-tenths of an ounce. That year, the price of the bar doubled to ten cents. Since then the purchase cost of the Hershey bar has shown periodic increases.
7. Geography. Which US state is not a significant location for sugar cane agriculture?

Answer: Colorado

Florida leads the United States in sugar cane with over 400,000 acres planted and 51% of the US sugar cane crop (2004-2005). Louisiana runs a close second. Texas and Hawaii are the other two states with significant commercial sugar cane production. Sugar cane requires a tropical or subtropical climate (largely not available in Colorado) to grow well. Sugar beets, however, are grown in Colorado.
8. History. Which legislative body passed the Sugar Act of 1764?

Answer: British Parliament

It is also known American Revenue Act or the American Duties Act. The act placed a duty of three pence per gallon on molasses imported from the British West Indies to the British North American colonies. The revenue raised from the tax was meant to help pay for the cost of British military and naval forces stationed in the American colonies.

The Act was generally unpopular in the American colonies and it and other laws such as the Stamp Act led to slogan "No taxation without representation." In 1766, the Sugar Act was appealed and replaced with a revenue act which lowered the duty to one penny per gallon.
9. Hobbies. Which alcoholic beverage is made primarily from distilled sugar products such as molasses?

Answer: Rum

Rum is made from distilled sugar products such as molasses or honey or sometimes directly from sugar cane juice. It is thought that the word "rum" might originate from the final syllable of the Latin term for sugar "saccharum". Like many other distilled spirits, rum typically has an alcohol content of 35% or more. Rum played an important role in the development of colonial America including the international slave trade of the early modern period. Tequila is made from the blue agave plant. Vodka is made from potatoes and/or cereal grains. Whiskey is made from cereal grains such as wheat, barley, and rye.
10. Humanities. Which sweet musical features the song "Toot Sweets"?

Answer: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

While the title "character" of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is a flying car, the musical does also include an important scene at a candy factory where Caractacus Potts tries to interest the factory's owner in his invention--a piece of candy that has holes in it along one side to play simple musical tunes. Caractacus and Truly Scrumptious extol the virtues of the title product in the song "Toot Sweets". "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is a 2010 musical based on the 1964 children's book by Roald Dahl. "Sweet Adeline" is a 1929 musical by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein. "Mary Poppins" is a 2004 musical based on both the P. L. Travers books and the 1964 Disney motion picture.
11. Literature. In the Roald Dahl short story "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar", how is the title character able to win successfully at casinos?

Answer: He can see through the cards.

Henry Sugar is a independently wealthy man who was always gambling. One day he happens to read the story of a man from India who was able to see through some objects like paper and around objects like a door if he can place his hand on the other side.

Henry practices this skill until he is able to see through cards with regularity. He goes to a casino and wins a large amount of money. The next morning he decides that the excitement is gone from gambling if he knows he will win. He throws the money hes won out of his window, causing a near-riot in the street below.

A passing police officer scolds him, suggesting that Henry find a more productive way to use his money if he wants to give it away. Henry decides to establish orphanages and travels to casinos throughout the world to win money so he can establish a series of orphanages. Eventually he hires a full time makeup artist to create disguises for him so that he can visit casinos with greater regularity and win more money to establish more orphanages. "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More" was a short story collection by Roald Dahl that was published in 1977. Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was also the author of "James and the Giant Peach" (1961) and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (1964).
12. Movies. In which movie did Marilyn Monroe play the role of Sugar Kane?

Answer: Some Like it Hot (1959)

In "Some Like it Hot", Marilyn Monroe portrayed Sugar Kane, the vocalist and ukulele player in an all-female band. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon portray the unlucky witnesses to the St. Valentine's Day Massacre who, going on the run, disguise themselves as women and join the band. Marilyn had difficulties filming this role.

In one infamous case, it took dozens of takes for her to correctly say the lines "It's me, Sugar" and "Where's the bourbon." In contrast, she was able to complete in twenty minutes a complicated scene that had been allotted three days to shoot.

In "The Misfits", Marilyn Monroe portrayed Roslyn Taber. In "The Seven Year Itch", she portrayed The Girl. In "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", she portrayed Lorelei Lee.
13. Music. Which band recorded the 1969 hit "Sugar, Sugar"?

Answer: The Archies

The Archies were a fictional band that appeared on the 1968-1969 animated television series "The Archie Show". The band featured most of the main characters from the series. Studio musicians played the instruments heard and Ron Dante and Toni Wine provided most of the vocals. Jeff Barry and Andy Kim wrote the song "Sugar, Sugar" which spent four weeks at Number One on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The next year, Wilson Pickett recorded a cover of the song that also was successful. "Who's Your Baby?", "Bang-Shang-A-Lang", and "Jingle Jangle" were other songs by the Archies that made the Top 40.
14. People. Of the boxers Sugar Ray Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson, which one was actually born with the first name Ray?

He had a career record of 173-19-6 with two "no contests". He was one of the first boxers to have an "entourage".
15. Religion. Which Old Testament figure proposed the riddle "Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet"? (Hint--Strong is a key word.)

Answer: Samson

The riddle is found in Judges 14:14. Samson may be best best known for his great strength that was tied to his long hair remaining untrimmed and his complicated relationship with his wife Delilah. Samson developed the riddle based upon his own experiences.

At one point he slew a young lion. Later he returned to the site and found bees and honey in the carcass of the lion. The lion was the strong eater. The honey was the something sweet to eat.
16. Sci/Tech. Which type of sugar molecule has the chemical formula C12H22O11?

Answer: Sucrose

Many monosaccharide sugars (such as glucose, fructose, and galactose) follow a pattern where there are an equal number of Carbon atoms and Oxygen atoms and Hydrogen atoms twice the number of each. Glucose, usually found in animal life, has the chemical formula C6H1206. Fructose, usually found in plant life, also has the chemical formula C6H12O6. Galactose, which can be found in lactose and red blood cells, also has the formula C6H12O6. Sucrose, a disaccharide of glucose and fructose, has a slightly different formula with one more Carbon atom than Oxygen atoms: C12H22O11.
17. Sports. The team's alumni include Roger Clemens and Rafael Palmeiro. For which sport are the Sugar Land (TX) Skeeters an independent league team?

Answer: Baseball

The Sugar Land Skeeters have been a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball since 2010. ("Skeeter" is a nickname for mosquitoes used in the southern United States.) The team plays at Constellation Field and won the 2016 championship series in that league. Roger Clemens made two appearances with the Skeeters in 2012 at the age of 50.

In his starts, he pitched eight innings, giving up three hits but no runs and getting three strike outs. Rafael Palmeiro appeared in one game in 2015 alongside his son Patrick. Skeeters fans gave Rafael Palmeiro the nickname "The Saccharine Slugger".
18. Television. On which 1980s situation comedy was Dolph Sweet a regular cast member?

Answer: Gimme a Break!

Dolph Sweet (1920-1985) portrayed Police Chief Carl Kanisky, a widowed father of three teen-aged girls on "Gimme a Break!" (1981-1987) for the first four seasons. When he died in real life his on-screen character was also said to have died. A World War 2 veteran, Sweet also portrayed police officers and other authority figures in several other television series and motion pictures including "Another World", "Hill Street Blues", and "The Out of Towners".
19. Video Games. In the "sweet" game "Candy Crush Saga", which combination of the same colored candies will create a doughnut?

Answer: Five candies in a straight line

Candy Crush is a puzzle game where the basic mechanism is to line up either vertically or horizontally three candies of the same color. This removes the candies from the screen and moves the other candies down. Lining up four candies creates a striped candy which, when cleared, clears all the candies in the direction the stripes are pointing. Arranging five candies in a "L" shape creates a wrapped candy which, when cleared, explodes candies within two spaces around it. Lining up five candies in a straight line creates a doughnut.

When a doughnut switches places with a candy it removes all candies of that color from the screen. Placing four candies in a two by two square does not do anything. Candy Crush was released by King in 2012 and is completely free to players who wish to play it that way although various game assists can be purchased if wished. Over 2.7 billion copies of the Candy Crush App have been downloaded.

In 2016, 25.5 million tons of sugar beets were produced in Germany. The sugar beet in what is now Germany goes back to the eighteenth century.
