Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are lots of pink flowers, but this particular flower is called a maiden pink. It belongs to the same genus as the carnation and Sweet William. Which of these is it?

Answer: Dianthus

The pink is thought to get its name from the characteristic frilled edge of its petals. The verb pink means to create a perforated pattern or a ragged edge; remember the pinking shears used to make the edges of fabric have jagged edges so they were less likely to unravel which were commonly used in the days before overlockers were available to the home sewer? It is thought that this family of flowers is the source for allocating the word pink to describe the color.

Pinks come in arrange of colors: some are actually mostly white, with pink tinges on parts of the petals; others are predominantly pink, ranging from a pale pastel shade to a vibrant hot pink; some are closer to purple than what I would normally call pink.

Eucalypts, pines and oaks are trees, not herbaceous plants.
2. You probably know that bubble gum was originally pink because that was the only color in the factory when Walter Diemer was producing his first large batch of the product he had invented. You may even know the name of the company for which he worked, but you may be as surprised as I was to discover what he was employed to do there. Which of these was his surprising official position?

Answer: Accountant

In 1926, Walter Diemer was an accountant working for the Fleer gum company who liked to experiment with various gum formulations in his spare time. One particular batch was less sticky and more elastic than usual gum, and Diemer saw the marketing possibilities.

His first test batch of 100 individually-wrapped pieces of bubble gum, priced at a penny a piece, sold out in a day, and he was able to interest the company in a larger marketing effort. He even trained salesman to blow bubbles!
3. In what city is a National Cherry Blossom festival held every spring to celebrate the 1912 gift of Japanese cherry trees from the mayor of Tokyo?

Answer: Washington, D.C.

The first two trees, planted on March 27, 1912, can still be seen at the end of 17th Street Southwest, in West Potomac Park. They were joined by hundreds more during the following decade. The first Cherry Blossom Festival was held in 1935, and a Cherry Blossom Pageant followed in 1940. Now the festival runs for a fortnight and includes a vast variety of activities - as well as providing an excuse to stroll through the park and admire the blooms.
4. In the CMYK color system used in color printing, this color is one of the three primary colors used. Which letter is used to represent the color shown here?

Answer: M

Magenta, described as a mixture of red and blue with all green wavelengths removed, is one of the three colors in the CMYK system of color production. The others are cyan (a blue-green mixture) and yellow. The K in the system refers to the black Keyplate used to align the colors to produce the final image.

In this system, combining magenta and cyan produces blue; magenta and yellow combine to give red; yellow overlaid with cyan creates green; all three colors (in theory) subtract all colors from the incident light, giving a black image.

In practice, inks are usually not perfect, and the result may be grayish. This is rectified most simply by using black ink instead of relying on the color mixture.
5. In what online game is it useful to breed a pink beta in order to eventually gain possession of the Seven Magic Fish of Isola?

Answer: Fish Tycoon

'Fish Tycoon' is a real-time game from Last Day of Work in which you breed various fish in your aquarium in the attempt to create the Seven Magic Fish (and become wealthy from selling the fish you produce along the way). There are many ways to breed combinations of fish for the desired result.

A number of breeding steps towards success involve use of a pink beta, so they are useful to breed. Experimentation will show which combinations yield a pink fish, and which combinations produce a beta fish. Putting these together gets you a pink beta! Solutions have been posted online, but the experimentation is most of the fun of this game, so I won't provide any instructions here - suffice it to say that both criteria can be met in a variety of ways.
6. What semi-precious gemstone, a colored variety of the second most abundant mineral in the earth's crust, was carved to make this elephant?

Answer: Rose quartz

Quartz, silicon dioxide, is second only to feldspar in terrestrial abundance. Rose quartz has a pink tinge due to the presence of trace amounts of impurities, usually titanium, iron or manganese. These impurities usually make it too cloudy to use for jewelry, and it is often carved into decorative shapes - hearts are common, because of the mineral's pink color.

Some rose quartz displays diasterism, which means that a bright star-like shape can be seen when light shines through the gem from the back.

This is caused by the presence of microscopic fibres of titanium dioxide within the gem.
7. Participants in what activity traditionally wear an outfit referred to as pinks?

Answer: Fox hunting

The bright red coats worn by some members of many hunt clubs (although some wear green instead) are called pinks for reasons that remain obscure. Suggestions include that it is a reference to their appearance after fading from much wear, or that it refers to a tailor who designed them.

These coats are not worn by all members of the hunt - only huntsmen, masters and whippers-in are entitled to wear colors by virtue of their role. Male guests may be invited to do so as a gesture of courtesy. Others wear black. And that is only the start of the detailed dress code!
8. The third day of a particular Australian cricket test is called Jane McGrath Day, and everything and everyone goes pink in an effort to raise money to provide health care nurses to support women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. In which city does this annual event occur?

Answer: Sydney

The Sydney Test starts in early January, and the third day of play has been dedicated to breast cancer awareness since 2009, following the death from breast cancer at the age of 42 of Jane McGrath, wife of fast bowler Glenn McGrath. Jane fought the disease for over eleven years, and in 2002 the couple set up a charitable foundation whose goal is to make dedicated breast cancer health cancer nurses widely available, especially to women in rural areas who have little local support available. Cricket Australia agreed to use the third day of the Sydney Test (the test ground that is 'home' for the New South Welsh McGrath) as a fund raiser.

The pinkness has increased each year - it is quite a sight to see the entire ground filled with people wearing pink clothing and sporting pink hair as they wave pink balloons around! In 2014 the Australian team wore special pink caps at the start of play, instead of their traditional baggy greens.

These were auctioned as part of the fundraising effort.

The day featured pink stumps, pink balls (which behaved pretty much the same as the traditional red ones), pink gloves on the wicketkeeper, and Mitchell Johnson even dyed his moustache pink.
9. If you have played the 'Angry Birds' application from Rovio Entertainment, you may have noticed that a new pink bird joined The Flock in 'Angry Birds Seasons'. What is her name?

Answer: Stella

Stella, a recalcitrant teenager who hates being told what to do, first appeared in 'Angry Birds Seasons: Back to School'. She is very good at thwarting the plans of the pigs who are the enemies of The Flock. When the screen is tapped, she surrounds herself with bubbles, which expand to trap nearby pigs and blocks, then lift them into the air, where the bubble explodes and sends everything falling back down.

Matilda is the white bird, Bomb is the black bird, and Bubbles is the orange bird.
10. What does it mean to say that you are in the pink?

Answer: You are feeling very healthy

People usually say that they are in the pink when describing themselves as recovering from a previous illness - I felt a bit crook last week, but I am in the pink again now. It is a rather old-fashioned phrase, and has not always been used with its current meaning.

In Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', a character describes himself as 'the very pink of courtesy', meaning that he is an excellent example of courteous behavior. Coming full circle from the beginning of this quiz, it has been suggested that describing something as a pink to denote its excellence is due to the fact that pinks were one of the favorite flowers in Elizabethan society.
