Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How do you write 250 in Roman numerals?

Answer: CCL

C is 100 and L is 50.
V is five and X is ten.
(Yes, I know some of them do not make sense.)
2. In the Bible, 250 men were swallowed up by fire after rebelling against one of the greatest of all prophets and Old Testament leaders. Who was he?

Answer: Moses

The Book of Numbers in Chapter 26 tells us that after the plague in Egypt the Lord told Moses to take a census of the whole Israelite community by families to enumerate all aged 20 or older who were able to serve in the army of Israel.
After listing several of the tribes, the Book tells us in verse nine: "and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah's followers when they rebelled against the LORD."
Verse 10 goes on: "The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign."
(As seen in the New International Version.)
3. One of the world's most popular video game franchises gave its followers imaginative 'species' to collect. It went through a number of generations. Following the launch of the second series there were 250. Which of these was it?

Answer: Pokémon

The first generation, colloquially known as "red" and "green" provided 150 characters in 1996. In 1999, "gold" and "silver" added 100 more.
By the time this question was posed, the number had risen to more than 700.
4. Which British sports car manufacturer produced a model called the Elise Cup 250?

Answer: Lotus

Launched in 2016, the Cup 250 was the fastest ever Lotus Elise - capable of up to 154mph. Only 250 were built.

Lotus had a strong tradition of producing sports cars. Launched in 1952, it went through the hands of several owners. Lotus produced Formula 1 cars for a time. The Cup 250 was the latest in the Elise series of small, nimble open-topped cars. It had an acceleration of 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, which is almost as fast as it takes some FunTrivia editors to exit a pub on being told "It's your round."
The wrong answers were all sports car manufacturers from continental Europe.
5. January 250AD marked the death of a pope who was selected when a dove appeared from heaven and settled on his head to indicate he was the Holy Spirit's choice as the next pope. Who was he?

Answer: Fabian

Fabian was Pope from 236 to 250. During that time he worked to repair splits that had occurred in the Church. He was venerated as a saint and his feast day is January 20th.
6. I got an invitation from a FunTrivia editor to a celebration of my 250th quiz - to take place in Canada's Area Code 250. "Bring your skis," I was told. Where is Area Code 250?

Answer: British Columbia

Area Code 250 covers most of British Columbia, including the city of Vancouver.
British Columbia is in the far west of Canada and is noted for spectacular ski resorts, including Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain.
7. Telling the story of a married farmer who falls for the charms of a woman from the city who tries to convince him to kill his wife, which monochrome masterpiece was placed at number 250 in an "Empire" magazine list of 'the best 500 movies since all time'?

Answer: "Sunrise" (1927)

"Sunrise", aka "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans", was a 'silent' movie that used what was then groundbreaking technology to add a musical score and sound effects soundtrack. George O'Brien starred as the farmer, Janet Gaynor as his wife and Margaret Livingston as the interloper. Livingston wanted O'Brien and he was tempted by her advances. Gaynor learned of the plans and ran away. O'Brien went after her. What happened then I will let you find out for yourself. (It is on internet sites if you want to catch it.)
Gaynor won an Oscar in 1929 for her role in this movie, along with "Seventh Heaven", and "Street Angel". (At this time Academy Awards went to actors for their work in movies in a specified year, rather than in an individual movie.) It also won Best Cinematography and Best Uniquer and Artistic Picture awards. On release the "New York Times" hailed the film as: "a film masterpiece"

That list was compiled in 2008 by votes from "Empire" readers, Hollywood filmmakers and key film critics
The wrong answers were the top three on that list. And just to show how fickle such lists can be, "Citizen Kane", made in 1941 and often cited as "the best movie ever made", came in at Number 28 on that list.
8. When "Rolling Stone" magazine produced a list of the top 500 songs of all time, which of these hot hits came in at Number 250?

Answer: "Hot Fun in the Summertime" - Sly and the Family Stone

"Hot Fun in the Summertime" was a chart hit in the USA after Sly and the Family Stone's appearance at the Woodstock festival. The song reached Number Two in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969.
The 'wrong' answers were the top three in the "Rolling Stone" list: Dylan, followed by the Stones followed by Lennon.
9. Which of these movies with a wrestler as star was placed at number 250 in an IMDB list of the worst 500 movies of all time?

Answer: "Santa with Muscles" (1996)

If I told you that Hulk Hogan was among the stars would you just nod your head and say "enough said"? Well, just in case you wanted more (and FunTrivia rules say there must be more), this was a tale of a millionaire (Hogan) who suffered an accident and woke up without any memory, but with the firm belief that he was Santa Claus. He then became a hero for saving an orphanage from a greedy scientist who wanted to destroy it for the magic crystals that were below it (Ed Begley Jnr: what were you thinking of?)
The critics could not be accused of being overkind. Joe Leydon in "Variety" compared it to a second-rate Saturday morning kids' show from the 1970s. He concluded: "Call it the movie equivalent of coal in a Christmas stocking, and you won't be far off the mark."
The three wrong answers were the top three worst movies in the list (if that is not a contradiction in terms.)
10. In 2015, Hennessy the cognac maker celebrated its 250th anniversary. What is the proper name for a 250th anniversary?

Answer: Sestercentennial

If you used a little bit of logic you will probably have spotted the Tri-, Quad- and Quin- prefixes - 300, 400 and 500 respectively.
As you may be able to tell from the name, although it is a French company, Hennessey was established by an Irishman, Richard Hennessy, in 1765. By that Sestercentennial anniversary, it was the world's largest supplier of cognac, with 40 per cent of the market. I'll drink to that.
