Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following Australian places is the odd one out because it is NOT an extreme point of the Australian mainland?

Answer: Mandurah (WA)

While Mandurah is a fair way to the west of Australia, it is not quite the westernmost point. That distinction is given to Steep Point. Cape Byron, Wilson's Promontory and Cape York are the eastern, southern and northern extremities of the mainland continent, respectively.
2. Many Australian place names come from indigenous words. Which of the following is the odd one out because it has a different origin?

Answer: Cloncurry

Cloncurry originates from an English name: specifically, it was named after Lady Cloncurry. Geelong is derived from the Aboriginal "jillong", meaning "land" or "cliffs". Dalyup takes its name from the river of the same name and is an Aboriginal word for the king parrot. Arrawarra is an Aboriginal word meaning "water lilies".
3. Australia is the odd continent out as it is the lowest and flattest continent on earth.

Answer: True

Australia's status as the flattest continent in the world was confirmed in early 2000 via a detailed NASA topographic map. Its average elevation is just 300 metres. It is also very flat by global standards; its highest peak, Mt Kosciusko, is less than half the height of the next largest peak across the other continents.
4. Which of these is NOT an Australian state or territory?

Answer: Northern Australia

The territory in Australia's north (and centre) is known as the Northern Territory. While New South Wales makes up the largest population in Australia, Western Australia is the largest state by size, making up about a third of the mainland, followed by Queensland and the Northern Territory.
5. Which of these high Australian peaks is the odd one out because it is not in New South Wales?

Answer: Mt Bogong

Australia's ten highest mainland mountains are all in New South Wales, making up the Snowy Mountains range. Mount Kosciusko tops the list at 2228 metres, followed by Mt Townsend at 2209 m. Mt Bogong is the highest mainland peak outside New South Wales, forming part of the Victorian Alps, sitting at 1986 m.

When all Australian territories are included, the highest peak by far is Mt McClintock in Antarctica (3490 m).
6. Australia is surrounded by a number of seas. Which of these is NOT one that touches the Australian coast?

Answer: Java Sea

The Java Sea lies further north of Australia, between Borneo and Java in Indonesia. The Coral and Arafura Seas sit on the northeast and north coasts respectively, while the Tasman is off the southeast coast, between Australia and New Zealand.
7. Australia has a number of islands off its coast that are considered to be part of its territory. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Cook Islands

The Cook Islands are considered part of New Zealand. Apart from the mainland itself, Tasmania is by far the largest Australian island territory (nearly 65,000 square km), and is also one of the eight states and territories of Australia. The next largest island off Australia is Melville Island (5,800 square km), which sits off the northern coast above the Northern Territory.
8. The Australian state of Queensland is the odd one out because it is considered to be the only Australian state where it can never snow.

Answer: False

While snow is relatively rare in Queensland, it can occur. Southeast Queensland in particular has some high peaks where light snow tends to fall on average about once a year. The area has also been home to some quite heavy falls, including in July, 1984, where 60cm fell over three days at Mount Tulley.
9. Australia is well known for its deserts. Which of the following is the odd one out because it isn't one of the three largest?

Answer: Perdika Desert

The Great Victoria Desert covers an incredible 348,000 square km across Western Australia and South Australia. The Great Sandy Desert is next largest (267,000 sq km) and the Tanami, sitting across Western Australia and the Northern Territory, comes in third (184,000 sq km). By comparison, the Perdika is very small; sitting at just 1,250 square km, it is Australia's smallest named desert.
10. Which of these large Australian rivers is the odd one out because it doesn't cross any state or territory borders?

Answer: Lachlan River

The Lachlan River travels almost 1,500 km throughout New South Wales, but does not cross any borders. The Murray, Australia's longest river, covers three states (New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia); the Murrumbidgee crosses the New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory border; and the Warrego travels through both New South Wales and Queensland.
