Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are in Illinois, and you can see a famous arch. If you cross the Mississippi River to your west (possibly on Interstate 55, 64, or 70), you will be in a big city, but you will not be in Illinois anymore. Which city will you be in?

Answer: St. Louis, Missouri

The suburbs of St. Louis continue into Illinois. Some of them include East St. Louis, Cahokia, Granite City, Madison, and Fairmont City. The Gateway Arch is visible from across the Mississippi River.
2. On the west side of the Mississippi River, you are in Arkansas. After crossing the river, you are in Tennessee. Which city are you in?

Answer: Memphis

In some areas, the Mississippi River is not the exact state border, because the path of the river has changed over the last 200 years. Even though almost all of Tennessee is east of the Mississippi River, there is a small amount west of it.
3. Portland, Oregon is separated from Vancouver, Washington by a river, with the Oregon/Washington border running through it. Which river is this?

Answer: Columbia River

Further upstream, the Snake River merges into the Columbia River. The Columbia River forms most of the border between Washington and Oregon.
4. If you cross the Hudson River west from New York City, you will be in New Jersey. Which city will you NOT find close to the Hudson River in New Jersey?

Answer: Camden

There is no toll for crossing the Hudson River to leave New York City. However, entering New York City from New Jersey requires paying a toll. Camden is across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, not across the Hudson from New York City.
5. Toledo, Ohio borders another state, but there is no river separating the two states. Which state borders Toledo to the north?

Answer: Michigan

The part of the Ohio-Michigan border that is on land is a straight line. The rest of the Ohio-Michigan border is inside Lake Erie. Interstate 75 connects Toledo, Ohio with Detroit, Michigan.
6. Interstates 71, 75, and 471 connect Cincinnati, Ohio with its suburbs in Kentucky, which include Covington and Newport. Which river separates Cincinnati from Covington and Newport?

Answer: Ohio River

Interstate 71 gets you to Louisville, Kentucky, while Interstate 75 gets you to Lexington, Kentucky. These two Interstates also go north towards other parts of Ohio.
7. I found a business card that said it was from Augusta, but the state name was left out. It said it would only take ten minutes to drive to the business from some parts of South Carolina, and one hour from Columbia, South Carolina. Which state is this Augusta in?

Answer: Georgia

Augusta, Georgia is on the Georgia-South Carolina border. There is another important Augusta, which is the capital of Maine, but that one is far away.
8. This urban area has the same city name in both Texas and Arkansas, and exists as a single metro area. What is it?

Answer: Texarkana

Fort Smith, Arkansas is on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border, Kansas City is on the Missouri-Kansas border, and Shreveport is in Louisiana, about 20 miles from the Texas border.
9. The Delaware River is the only thing separating this city from New Jersey. The river can easily be crossed from this city by the Delaware Memorial Bridge, which leads to the south end of the New Jersey Turnpike. Which city is it?

Answer: Wilmington, Delaware

Just like the Hudson River, crossing the Delaware River requires paying a toll if you are leaving New Jersey, but not if you are entering. This applies to the Delaware Memorial Bridge as well as many Pennsylvania-New Jersey crossings.
10. The Quad Cities can be found in two states, separated by the Mississippi River. Even though they are called the Quad Cities, there are five equally important cities in the area, not four. Other than Iowa, which state does this region include?

Answer: Illinois

The cities in the Quad Cities area are Davenport, Bettendorf (both in Iowa), Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline (all three in Illinois). Unlike most metro areas, this region has no single major city, but several smaller ones.
