Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This island or atoll is in the Pacific and came to public attention 1866 when the "Libelle" of Germany wrecked on the eastern reef during a storm. Some of the survivors reached Guam on April 8, thirty five days after the wreck. This atoll is managed by the US Air Force. Where would we go to find the missing equipment?

Answer: Wake Island

In pre-World War II, most of the atolls were Japanese territory. So, though this is really a three island atoll with a central lagoon, it was officially referred to as an island (singular). The wreck of the Libelle was reported internationally once the survivors reached Guam.
2. A group of islands in the Arctic circle were discovered in 1881. The HMS Pandora had been purchased by James Gordon Bennett, Jr. It was then retrofitted for arctic travel and commissioned as USS Jeannette by the US Navy. The island chain is named for the man in charge of the expedition; do you know which?

Answer: Lieutenant Commander George W. DeLong, USN

The DeLong Islands, Jeannette, Henrietta and Bennett, were discovered in May 1881. In June, the expedition was forced to abandon ship as the Jeannette was being crushed by the ice. They began a land journey to find a settlement, then took to three of the small boats that they had brought with them. One of the boats capsized with no survivors.

The remaining two reached land, but were widely separated. The crew from one of the boats found a settlement and were rescued. DeLong was a passenger of the last small boat and perished with all but two of his men from starvation and exposure.
3. Ah, this clue is all about "An Fear Marbh" (the dead man). Surely it refers to the island of Inishtooskert, which is part of what group of Irish islands?

Answer: Blasket Islands

This island probably got its nickname from the appearance when seen from the east. It is inhabited by many seabirds, and is listed as a scuba diving location. The remainder of the Blasket Islands are Great Blasket Island, Beginish, Inishnabro, Inishvickillane and Tearaght Island.
4. Which of these islands would be described by a clue referring to a Pacific island discovered by pirate John Clipperton and officially claimed by France in 1858?

Answer: Clipperton Island

This island atoll was claimed by France, the United States and Mexico, but it officially became French after an arbitration by King Victor Emanuel of Italy in 1931. The island is formed in a ring shape around a freshwater lagoon.
5. The clues for this island merely include items of warm clothing and the names Bouvet, Lindsay and Liverpool. Which of these islands would this be referencing?

Answer: Bouvetøya

It is believed that this island, named the most remote island in the world, was first discovered in 1739 by Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier. However, he did not circumnavigate the island and the location recorded for the island was incorrect. In 1808 it was discovered by James Lindsay, who named the island after himself.

It was named Liverpool Island when found in 1825 by Captain Norris. An expedition from Norway landed and stayed on the island for a month in 1927, claiming the island and renaming it for the original discover.
6. This clue merely says "Oregon Treaty of June 15, 1846" and "Pig War". Which group of islands would this be referring to?

Answer: San Juan Islands

The Oregon Treaty was intended to define the boundaries between the United States and British North America. However, the treaty was not clear as whether Haro or Rosario Strait actually formed the boundary. This caused contention which escalated when an American farmer, Lyman Cutlar, shot a pig eating in his garden that was owned by Irishman Charles Griffin.

The pig was the only casualty of the war.
7. One of the clues states that Germany purchased these islands in 1884 from Spain and named them German New Guinea. What are these islands named today?

Answer: Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands were first settled by the Micronesian people. Later the Spanish and English would lead expeditions to these islands, with Spain claiming them in 1874. After the acquisition, Germany began a trading company to harvest copra, the dried kernel of a coconut.
8. The next clue concerns an island in Lake Superior which was identified as a trading post and copper mining endeavor. What is the third large island on Lake Superior?

Answer: Michipicoten Island

Copper mining began in the 1850s and continued until 1907, but the island was not rich in copper deposits. Today the island is a Canadian Provincial Park, and there are many opportunities to hike, kayak, scuba dive and more.
9. This clue only tells us to find "The Man in the Iron Mask"; which Mediterranean island might that be?

Answer: Île Sainte-Marguerite

These islands are collectively known as the Lérins Islands, situated in the Mediterranean near Cannes. The Man in the Iron Mask was a prisoner for thirty-four years until his death on November 19, 1703, though there is much question as to his true identity.
10. Our last clue refers to an island found by Christopher Columbus in 1498 during his third New World Voyage. The fleet anchored in Monkey Harbour, and he named the island Port of Cats. Which of these islands did they stop at?

Answer: Chacachacare

This island is part of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago known as the Bocas Islands. Since its discovery, it has been used as a military base for Venezuelan revolutionaries, a cotton plantation, a whaling station and a leper colony.
