Strasbourg is the capital of the Grand Est region, and lies on the west bank of the Rhine River, directly opposite the German town of Kehl. Its historic city centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Strasbourg is home to both the Parliament of the European Union and the Council of Europe.
