Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The host of the 2006 Winter Olympics, which city is the capital of the Piedmont region of Italy?

Answer: Turin

Known locally as Torino, Turin was the fourth-largest city in Italy in the early 21st century. Situated on the banks of the Po River in the north west of the country, it was the first capital of Italy, between 1861 and 1865. The 2006 Winter Olympics took place in the city and surrounding ski resorts.
2. The second-largest city in Greece, what is the capital of the region of Macedonia (NOT the country known as North Macedonia)?

Answer: Thessaloniki

The ancient Kingdom of Macedonia covered a large area of modern day Greece and the former Yugoslavia. In more modern times, when Yugoslavia was split asunder, the southernmost state called itself Macedonia, which upset the Greeks - it renamed itself North Macedonia in 2018.

The Greek Macedonia is the country's main centre of agriculture, with Thessaloniki serving as its capital. The city lies on the Thermaic Gulf, at the northwestern corner of the Aegean Sea.
3. Which city, at the mouth of the Nidelva River, was the third-most populous in Norway in the early 21st century?

Answer: Trondheim

Trondheim was founded in 997 AD and was the capital of Norway until 1217. A former centre for shipbuilding, the modern city is now a educational, commercial and cultural hub.
4. Which one of these administrative subdivisions of European countries is in Germany?

Answer: Thuringia

Thuringia is a state of Germany located in the centre of the country - it was part of East Germany during the Cold War. Its capital is Erfurt, with other large cities including Gera and Jena. Tuscany is a region of Italy, Toplica is a district of Serbia and Tyrol is a state of Austria.
5. Which city, the capital of the French region of Occitanie, is the centre of the European aerospace industry?

Answer: Toulouse

Toulouse lies on the banks of the Garonne River in southern France. It is the capital of both the department of Haute-Garonne and the region of Occitanie. The city is the home of Airbus, the world's largest manufacturer of airliners. The University of Toulouse, opened in 1229, is one of the oldest in Europe.
6. Three of these European rivers flow through a national capital city. Which is the only one which does NOT?

Answer: Tisza

The Tisza River rises in Ukraine and flows through Romania, Hungary and Serbia, joining the Danube in the latter country. It doesn't flow through the capitals of any of these countries. The Tagus enters the sea at Lisbon, capital of Portugal; the Thames flows through London, capital of the United Kingdom; the Tiber flows through Italy's capital, Rome.
7. Which Italian city was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1920?

Answer: Trieste

Trieste is located on the Gulf of Trieste, an arm of the Adriatic Sea, a few miles from the border with Croatia. Its geographical position saw it change ownership a number of times over the centuries. The modern city is a busy seaport and a leading educational and scientific research centre.
8. Which city in Spain has a long history of sword making?

Answer: Toledo

Toledo is the capital of the central Spanish autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. The city's history of steel and sword making dates back to 500 BC, and it supplied weapons to the legions of Ancient Rome. In the early 21st century, the city's economy is much more service based.
9. Which country is 97% in Asia and only 3% in Europe?

Answer: Turkey

Turkey is a transcontinental country, with the European part, which is dominated by the city of Istanbul, separated from the much bigger Asian part by the Bosphorus, Dardanelles and Sea of Marmara. The capital, Ankara, is in the Asian part. Although only a small part of the country lies in Europe, it takes part in European sports competitions almost exclusively, and has long wanted to be a member of the European Union.
10. Which one of these cities, all of which were once part of the Soviet Union, is now the capital city of an independent country?

Answer: Tallinn

Tallinn is the capital city of Estonia. The city stands on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, an arm of the Baltic Sea. Its medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
