1. Which Russian city was formerly known as Stalingrad?

Answer: Volgograd

Volgograd was founded in the 16th century under the name of Tsaritsyn, and was renamed Stalingrad in 1925. During World War 2, it was the site of what is regarded as the deadliest battle in the history of modern warfare, with the German army laying siege to the city for over five months.

When Joseph Stalin died, and fell out of favour, the city was renamed again, becoming Volgograd in 1961, named after the Volga River on whose banks it stands.
2. The capital of an autonomous community of the same name, what is the name of the third-largest city in Spain in the early 21st century?

Answer: Valencia

Valencia lies on the Mediterranean coast of eastern Spain, and is the third-largest city in the country, after Madrid and Barcelona. Its port is the largest in the western Mediterranean, although the service sector accounts for the greatest part of the city's economy.
3. Which one of these places is the capital of an island nation in the Mediterranean Sea?

Answer: Valletta

Valletta is the capital of Malta, an island archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea between Italy and Tunisia. Valletta is located on the east coast of the main island, and was founded in the 16th century by the Knights Hospitaller. It suffered much devastation during World War 2, with both the Italian and German air forces launching numerous air raids on the city.
4. Which European capital city, which lies on the banks of the Danube River, is home to the Hofburg and Schonbrunn Palaces?

Answer: Vienna

Vienna is the capital of Austria, and lies on the banks of the Danube in the east of the country. In the early 21st century, it was the second-largest German-speaking city in the world, after Berlin. The Hofburg Palace was the former imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty, and is now the official residence of the Austrian president.

The Schonbrunn Palace was the summer residence of the Habsburgs, and is now a museum.
5. Which river, the longest in Czechia, flows through its capital city, Prague?

Answer: Vltava

The Vltava River rises in western Czechia, and flows in a mainly northerly direction for around 270 miles to its confluence with the Elbe in the north of the country. Apart from Prague, other cities on its banks include Cesky Krumlov and Cesky Budejovice.
6. Which Italian city, located on the banks of the Adige River, was the setting for Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"?

Answer: Verona

Verona is a city in northern Italy in Veneto Region. Lying on the banks of the Adige River. The entire city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its historical buildings. William Shakespeare set two of his plays in the city - "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Two Gentlemen of Verona".
7. Which French city, which gives its name to a 20th century treaty, is the site of a former royal palace?

Answer: Versailles

Versailles is a city in Ile-de-France in the south western suburbs of Paris. It is synonymous with the Palace of Versailles, the seat of French kings until the French Revolution of 1789, and now a tourist attraction. The Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended World War 1, was signed in the palace on June 28th, 1919.
8. Which one of these places is the capital of what is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the entire world?

Answer: Vaduz

Vaduz is the capital of Liechtenstein, a small principality sandwiched between Austria and Switzerland in the Alps. Uzbekistan, in central Asia, is the only other doubly landlocked country in the world. Vaduz lies on the banks of the Rhine River, and is the home of Vaduz Castle, the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein.
9. Which one of these cities, each of which was formerly part of the Soviet Union, became the capital of an independent nation in 1990?

Answer: Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania. It is situated in the southeast of the country, at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. Its old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
10. St Mark's Square is the main public square in which Italian city?

Answer: Venice

Venice is located on an archipelago of over 100 islands at the north western corner of the Adriatic Sea. It was a republic in its own right until Napoleon Bonaparte conquered it in 1797, after which it became part of the Austrian Empire. It changed hands a few times until becoming permanently part of Italy in 1866. St Mark's Square is the site of St Mark's Basilica, a Roman Catholic cathedral.
